Development of Small-scale Hybrid Rocket Motor using $PE-N_2O$ Propellants ($PE-N_2O$ 추진제를 이용한 소형 하이브리드 로켓 모터 개발)

  • In this study, a hybrid rocket motor with separable and detachable oxidizer tank from combustion chamber is developed. Initially, the measured thrust of the motor showed about 30% of the design thrust since the oxidizer supply was not enough. In order to solve this problem, application is made to expand the orifice diameter of oxidizer injector empirically, so that the mass flow rate of oxidizer was improved. The improved performance was about 60% of design thrust, 18kgf, and thrust-to-weight ratio was reasonable, compared with other sounding rockets.

  • Recently, fluidic thrust vector control has become a core technique to control multifarious air vehicles, such as supersonic aircraft and modern rockets. Fluidic thrust vector control using the shock vector concept has many advantages for achieving great vectoring performance, such as fast vectoring response, simple structure, and low weight. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics methods are used to study a three-dimensional rectangular supersonic nozzle with a slot injector. To evaluate the reliability and stability of computational methodology, the numerical results were validated with experimental data. The pressure distributions along the upper and lower nozzle walls in the symmetry plane showed an excellent match with the test results. Several numerical simulations were performed based on the shear stress transport(SST) $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model. The effect of the momentum flux ratio was investigated thoroughly, and the performance variations have been clearly illustrated.

  • In this paper, the combustion characteristics of a hybrid propulsion system were studied with various L/D(length vs diameter) ratio of the single port type solid fuel. Experiments of L/D ratio change were performed for 2 cases with the fixed grain port diameter and fuel length respectively. For the First case, results show that there are no large variation for regression rates as the L/D ratio changes. And as the L/D ratio increases, the O/F ratio and thrust tends to increase. For the Second case, there are no large change for O/F ratio and thrust as L/D ratio changes. On the other hand, as the L/D ratio decreases, only the regression rate tends to increase.

Experiments were performed for 2 cases with the fixed grain port diameter and fuel length respectively. For the second case, there is no large change for O/F ratio, thrust and characteristic velocity as L/D ratio changes. Experimentally, exponent n in $\dot{r}=a{G_0}^n$ was found about 0.5 and then the O/F ratio was shown nearly constant. In the experiment, PE and gas oxygen were used as a fuel and an oxidizer.

Transient Analysis of a Liquid Rocket Engine System Considering Thrust Control (추력 제어를 고려한 액체로켓 엔진시스템 과도해석)

  • It is essential to develop a transient analysis model for the turbopump-fed type liquid rocket engine development, especially for deriving the number of test and its parameters. In this study we proposed a mathematical model of turbopump-fed type liquid rocket engine, and inspected transient mode changes of a rocket engine according to variations of thrust control valve opening ratio. To verify the results, we solved the same problem with AnaSyn software from Russia, and concluded that the results of transient code we developed deviated within 2% from AnaSyn results. Also, using the transient engine analysis code we showed the possibility to find out the system level design Parameters of the components. For example, we modeled a pressure stabilizer which is used to control the consistency of mixture ratio in the gas generator as forced damping system, and found the stability range of the natural frequency and the damping ratio with the transient engine system analysis code.

  • In the present study, the effect of pitch amplitude on the unsteady aerodynamics of a NACA 0012 airfoil is numerically investigated. When the frequency ratio is equal to 1.0, airfoil pitching with 20 and 30 degrees of pitch amplitude shows almost small lift generation, but the lift is significantly increased in case of 10-degree pitch amplitude. When the frequency is 0.5, the lift coefficients have large values, and the lift increases with a decrease in pitch amplitude. When the frequency ratio is 1.0, the airfoil generates large thrust. The thrust decreases as the pitch amplitude decreases. When the frequency ratio is 0.5, drag is generated for the 30-degree pitch amplitude, but the thrust is generated for 10-degree pitch amplitude. In future, the effect of heave amplitude on the unsteady aerodynamics of the airfoil will be studied.

Fundamental Study on the Effect of Grousers on the Soil Thrust of Off-road Tracked Vehicles (그라우저 효과를 고려한 야지궤도차량의 지반추력 평가연구)

  • When an off-road tracked vehicle travels, an engine thrust that is transmitted to the continuous track induces a shearing action on the soil-track interface. Consequently, the relative displacement known as slip displacement takes place on the soil-track interface, which develops an associated soil thrust acting as a traction force. For the loose or soft ground conditions, an excessively large slip displacement can be required for the development of the desired soil thrust which will make the tracked vehicle mobile and therefore the outer surface of the continuous track is generally designed to protrude with grousers. This paper fundamentally studied the effect of grousers on the soil thrust of off-road tracked vehicles. Based on the soil-track interaction theory, a new soil thrust assessment method that properly takes into account the effect of grousers was developed. Also, the soil thrust of off-road tracked vehicles equipped with a number of grousers was evaluated using the developed assessment method. The results showed that grousers increased the soil thrust of the continuous track, enhancing the overall tractive performance of off-road tracked vehicles. These effects were more obvious as the height of grouser increased and the spacing of grouser decreased; thus, it is concluded that the grouser which has smaller shape ratio (span of the grouser to a grouser height) significantly enhances off-road tracked vehicle's performance.

Correlation between the EPB shield TBM machine data and the ground condition (EPB Shield TBM 기계데이터와 지반상태의 상관관계 분석)

  • This research covers correlation analysis between the machine data measured from EPB Shield TBM construction site and the ground condition during excavation, and figures out how the machine data are affected by the change of ground conditions through single and mixed parameter analysis. It was found that when the ground is changed from hard rock to soft rock, the ratio of the cutter torque to thrust force increases. The relationship between the ratio of the cutter torque to thrust force and the penetration rate shows that the ratio has a certain range of values for hard rock; on the other hand, it increases for soft rock. It means that we can recognize a sign of appearance of weak zone by assessing the ratio of the cutter touque to thrust force according to each penetration rate. Multiple regression analysis of the machine data showed that the cutter torque increases with the increases of the total thrust force, and it decreases with the increase of the uniaxial compressive strength of the ground.

  • This paper presents an experimental and parametric study of a biomimetic fish robot actuated by the Lightweight Piezo-composite Actuator(LIPCA). The biomimetic aspects in this work are the oscillating tail beat motion and shape of caudal fin. Caudal fins that resemble fins of BCF(Body and Caudal fin) mode fish were made in order to perform parametric study concerning the effect of caudal fin characteristics on thrust production at an operating frequency range. The observed caudal fin characteristics are the shape, area, and aspect ratio. It was found that a high aspect ratio caudal fin contributes to high swimming speed. The fish robot was propelled by artificial caudal fins shaped after thunniform-fish and mackerel caudal fins, which have relatively high aspect ratio, produced swimming speed as high as 2.364 cm/s and 2.519 cm/s, respectively, for 300 Vpp input voltage excited at 0.9 Hz. Thrust performance of the biomimetic fish robot was examined by Strouhal number, Froude number, Reynolds number, and Net forward force.

Study on design parameters of leaning-type arch bridges

  • Leaning-type arch bridge is a new spatial structural system composed of two vertical arches and two leaning arches. So far there has been no contrast analysis of leaning type arch bridge with different systems. This paper focus on a parametric study of leaning type arch bridge with different systems to find the influential rules on structural forces and stability and to provide some reference for practical designs. The parametric analysis is conducted with different rise-to-span ratios and bending rigidities of arch ribs by comparing internal forces. The internal forces decline obviously with the increase of the rise-to-span ratio. The bending moments at the centers of the main arches and the leaning arches are sensitive to the bending rigidities of arch ribs. Parametric studies are also carried out with different structural systems and leaning angles of the leaning arch by comparing the static stability. The lateral stiffness of leaning-type arch bridge is less than the in-plan stiffness. Compared with the leaning-type arch bridge without thrust, the leaning-type arch bridge with thrust has a lower stability safety coefficient. The stability safety coefficient rises gradually with the increase of inclining angle of the leaning arch. This study shows that the rise-to-span ratio, bending rigidities of arch ribs, structural system and leaning angles of the leaning arch are all critical design parameters. Therefore, these parameters in unreasonable range should be avoided.
