Design of Tower Damper Gain Scheduling Algorithm for Wind Turbine Tower Load Reduction (풍력터빈 타워 하중 저감을 위한 타워 댐퍼 게인 스케줄링 알고리즘 설계)

  • This paper deals with the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) 5-MW reference wind turbine. The controller which include MPPT (Maximum power point tracking) control algorithm and tower load reduction control algorithm was designed by MATLAB Simulink. This paper propose a tower damper algorithm to improve the existing tower damper algorithm. To improve the existing tower damper algorithm, proposed tower damper algorithm were applied the thrust sensitivity scheduling and PI control method. The thrust sensitivity scheduling was calculated by thrust force formula which include thrust coefficient table. Power and Tower root moment DEL (Damage Equivalent Load) was set as a performance index to verify the load reduction algorithm. The simulation were performed 600 seconds under the wind conditions of the NTM (Normal Turbulence Model), TI (Turbulence Intensity)16% and 12~25m/s average wind speed. The effect of the proposed tower damper algorithm is confirmed through PSD (Power Spectral Density). The proposed tower damper algorithm reduces the fore-aft moment DEL of the tower up to 6% than the existing tower damper algorithm.

  • Dual throat nozzle(DTN) is recently attracting much attention as a new concept of the thrust vectoring technique of propulsion jet. This DTN is designed with two throats, an upstream minimum and a downstream minimum at the nozzle exit, with a cavity in between the upstream throat and exit. In the present study, a computational work has been carried out to analyze the performance of a dual throat nozzle(DTN) at various mass flow rate of secondary flow. Two-dimensional, steady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The present computational results were validated with some experimental data available. Based upon the present results, Thrust-vector control using a DTN is discussed in terms of the thrust coefficient and the coefficient of discharge.

  • A thrust control valve of a liquid rocket engine plays a role to increase or decrease the thrust of an LRE by modulating the flow rate of propellant into a gas-generator. This paper deals with a flow regulator that has functions of not only modulating thrust but also maintaining constant flow rate regardless of pressure change at inlet or outlet of the flow regulator. A direct acting flow regulator was fabricated and tested for the comparison of experimental and simulation results under steady-state conditions. The drawbacks and limitations of the flow regulator were analyzed. Also the new design of a flow regulator was proposed.

Testing of Load Capacity of a Foil Thrust Bearing

  • In this study, the performance of foil thrust bearings was investigated by performing bearing take-off and load capacity tests, using an in-house designed and manufactured vertical bearing test rig. The mean take-off rotational speed and maximum load capacity of the bearing specimen were ~18,000 rpm and ~80 kPa, respectively. The vertical bearing test rig was observed to yield higher coefficients of friction and frictional torques than a horizontal bearing test rig under identical test conditions. This was a result of its structural characteristics, in that the bearing specimen is placed atop the thrust runner, which keeps it from being separated from the runner after the bearing take-off. In addition, bearing take-off was observed at a higher runner rotational speed as this structure keeps air from flowing between the top foil and runner surfaces, which requires a higher runner speed. The parallel alignment between the bearing specimen and runner surfaces can be maintained within a certain range more easily in a vertical test rig than in a horizontal test rig. Because of these advantages, Korean Industrial Standard, KS B 2060, recommends a vertical bearing test rig as the standard test device for foil thrust bearings.

Internal Ballistics Analysis and Experimental Validation of Thrust Modulation for Hybrid Rocket Using Self-Pressurizing Nitrous Oxide (자발가압 아산화질소를 이용한 하이브리드 로켓의 추력제어 내탄도 해석 및 실험적 검증)

  • In this study, a thrust modulation through oxidizer mass flow rate control and internal ballistic analysis based on Whitmore and Chandlers' models was conducted on a blow-down hybrid rocket using nitrous oxide. The tank pressure prediction considering mass flow rate control of the self-pressuring oxidizer was conducted, and the results showed good agreements with experimental results. In order to verify the internal ballistic analysis, a ground combustion test using a 500 N class hybrid rocket was conducted, and it was confirmed that the experimental results and the analytical results were quite consistent in the chamber pressure and thrust, thereby, a modeling technique capable of predicting the thrust modulation performance is proposed.

  • The thrust vector control technique is essential for high maneuverability of unmanned aerial vehicles. In the present study, a multi-component balance was developed to quantitatively evaluate the thrust-vectoring performance of a supersonic rectangular nozzle based on the Coanda coflowing effect. Precise calibration and detailed data analysis were performed during the development. It was found that the cross-talk errors between load cells in the balance were less than 5%, and that the unwanted errors due to high-pressure supply tubes were almost negligible, which contributed to the high accuracy of the present balance design. Some preliminary test results of the thrust-vectoring performance of the present nozzle design were also obtained and analyzed.

  • An energy balance analysis is conducted for a 30 t thrust level liquid rocket engine. The relations between thrust and combustion pressure, between thrust and propellant flow rate, and between combustion pressure and fuel pump pressure rise are compared against those indicated by a published database of the existing rocket engines. A combustion pressure higher than the old design value is obtained, implying that the present design is high-performance oriented. The thrust to propellant flow rate ratio is the same as that of the existing engines, indicating that the specific impulse performance is at the usual level. The fuel pump pressure rise is found to be slightly high when the combustion pressure is considered, and it is attributed to the pressure budget of the present ground test engine not being optimized.

  • The engine performance test was carried out to investigate the effects of breath and exhaust on the performance of a reciprocating engine for small aircraft. In this test, three valves to control flow areas of a inlet and two outlets were used, the engine manifold pressure and the static thrust of propeller were measured in nine breath/exhaust conditions. Generally, small variations on the performance were showed as the test conditions were changed. The manifold pressure was increased as flow area of the inlet or the outlet was decreased in normal condition, however it was decreased as both flow areas were decreased. The static thrust of propeller was showed similar as the manifold pressure.

Movable Nozzle Performance Analysis by Using ADAMS (ADAMS를 이용한 가동 노즐 성능 평가 기법)

  • Effective-pivot effects on the thrust vector control performance of the flexible seal nozzle to be used to control the flight direction of missile were investigated by computer simulation. $2^3$-Design of experiment technique was applied and ADMAS was used for the surrogate technique. As a result, radial pivot position had more influence upon the nozzle actuating performance than axial pivot position. Connecting method of actuator was also important factor in determining effective-pivot effects on the thrust vector control performance of the flexible seal nozzle.

  • The mechanism of power transmission from motor torque to stem thrust and the operation characteristic of each stroke position are analyzed using the diagnostic signal, and effects of differential pressure on the performance of motor operated flexible wedge gate valve are investigated. Test facility consists of 76 mm motor operated valve(flexible wedge type), pump and pipe system. Static and dynamic test are performed separately, and two differential pressure conditions are applied in the dynamic test. To evaluate the performance of valve, test signals for the torque, thrust, current, voltage and stroke length are acquired by using UDS which is diagnosis device for motor operated valve, and each diagnostic signal is analyzed and compared. The characteristic of valve performance factors such as stem factor, rate of loading, valve factor, are evaluated, and these factors are found to be severely influenced by the fluid differential pressure.
