Strain-dependent-deformation property of Gyeongju compacted bentonite buffer material for engineered barrier system

  • This study aims to investigate the strain-dependent-deformation property of Gyeongju bentonite buffer material. A series of unconfined compressive tests were performed with cylindrical specimens prepared at varying dry densities (𝜌d = 1.58 g/cm3 to 1.74 g/cm3) using cold isostatic pressing technique. It is found that as 𝜌d increase, the unconfined compressive strength (qu), failure strain, and elastic modulus (E) of Gyeongju compacted bentonite (GCB) increases. Normalized elastic modulus (Esec/Emax) degradation curves of GCB specimens are fitted using Ramberg-Osgood model and the elastic threshold strain (𝜀e,th) is determined through the fitted curves. The strain-dependency of E and Poisson's ratio (v) of GCB were observed. E and v were measured constant below 𝜀e,th of 0.14 %. Then, E decreases while v increases after exceeding the strain threshold. The Esec/Emax degradation curves of GCB in this study suggests wider linear range and higher linearity than those of sedimentary clay in previous study. On top of that, the influence of 𝜌d is observed on Esec/Emax degradation curves of GCB, showing a slight increase in 𝜀e,th with increase in 𝜌d. Furthermore, an empirical model of qu with 𝜌d and a correlation model between qu and E are proposed for Gyeongju bentonite buffer materials.

Creep-permeability behavior of sandstone considering thermal-damage

  • This investigation presented conventional triaxial and creep-permeability tests on sandstones considering thermally-induced damage (TID). The TID had no visible effects on rock surface color, effective porosity and permeability below $300^{\circ}C$ TID level. The permeability enlarged approximately two orders of magnitude as TID increased to $1000^{\circ}C$ level. TID of $700^{\circ}C$ level was a threshold where the influence of TID on the normalized mass and volume of the specimen can be divided into two linear phases. Moreover, no prominent variations in the deformation moduli and peak strength and strain appeared as TID< $500^{\circ}C$ level. It is interesting that the peak strength increased by 24.3% at $700^{\circ}C$ level but decreased by 11.5% at $1000^{\circ}C$ level. The time-related deformation and steady-state creep rate had positive correlations with creep loading and the TID level, whereas the instantaneous modulus showed the opposite. The strain rates under creep failure stresses raised 1-4 orders of magnitude than those at low-stress levels. The permeability was not only dependent on the TID level but also dependent on creep deformation. The TID resulted in large deformation and complexity of failure pattern for the sandstone.

Electrooptic Response of Reflective Liquid Crystal Cell

  • The electrooptic properties of the reflected light in a reflective mode, $45^{\circ}C$twisted nematic liquid crystal (TNLC) cell were investigated in the voltage regions near and away from the Freedericksz transition threshold. The measured reflectivity away from the threshold voltage ($V_th$) could not be described by the model which assurnes a constant tilt angle as well as a linearized distribution of twist angle across the cell, although the data are well fitted near $V_th$. We found that in the voltage region away from $V_th$, the model considering the distributions of the tilt angle and the twist angle should be applied for the calculation of the reflectivity. The director-axis distributions were obtained from the numerical integration of the Euler-Lagrange equation.

철도차량 완충기 패드용 고무소재 수명예측 (Useful Lifetime Prediction of Coupling Rubber Pad for Railway Vehicles)

  • Coupling rubber pad are important components in railway vehicles. It can be used for reduce shock, vibration and noise. Simple tension, equi-biaxial tension and pure shear test were performed to acquire the coefficient of rubber material which were Mooney-Rivlin and Ogden model. The finite element analysis was executed to evaluate the behavior of deformation and stress distribution by using the commercial finite element analysis code. Useful life evaluation are very important in design procedure to assure the safety and reliability of the rubber components. In this paper, useful life prediction of rubber pad for railway vehicle were experimentally investigated. Accelerated heat-aging test for rubber material were carried. Compression set results changes as the threshold are used for assessment of the useful life and time to threshold value were plotted against reciprocal of absolute temperature to give the Arrhenius plot.

Experimental-numerical study on the FRP-strengthened reinforced concrete beams with a web opening

  • The effect of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthening on the behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with web openings is studied. It has been observed that the load-carrying capacity and deflection in the presence of an opening reduced by approximately 50% and 75%, respectively. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite models are first validated with the results obtained from experimental data. Thereafter, a series of parametric studies are conducted for the beam with an opening. In the study, it is observed that a square opening shape is critical in comparison to the elliptical and circular-shaped opening. The web opening located near the support is found to be critically compared to the opening in the middle of the beam. Given the critical opening shape situated at the critical location, the increase in FRP layers enhances the load-deformation behaviour of the FRP-wrapped RC beam. However, the load-deformation responses are not significantly improved beyond a certain threshold value of FRP layers.

  • AE(Acoustic Emission) signal is correlated to workpiece material, cutting conditions and tool geometry during metal cutting. The relationship between AE signal and cutting parameters can be obtained by theoretical model and experiments. The value of CR(Count Rate) is nearly constant in stable cutting, but when the chatter vibration occours, the value of CR is rapidly increased due to the vibration deformation zone. By experimental signal processing of AE, it is more effective than by RMS(Root Mean Square) measurement to detect the threshold of chatter vibration by CR measurement.

나노스케일 워터젯 가공에 대한 분자시뮬레이션 연구 (Molecular Simulation of Nano-Scale Waterjet Machining)

  • This study employs molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the material behavior of workpieces in waterjet machining processes. To gain fundamental insights into waterjet machining, simulations were conducted using pure water, excluding abrasive particles. The simulation model comprised thousands of water molecules interacting with a single crystal metal workpiece. Water molecule clusters were imparted with various velocities to initiate collisions with the metal workpiece. The material behavior of the metal surface was analyzed with respect to the applied velocity conditions, considering the intricate interplay between water molecules and the workpiece at the atomic scale. The results demonstrated that the machining of the metal workpiece occurred only when water molecules were endowed with velocities above a certain threshold. In cases where energy was insufficient, the metal workpiece exhibited a slight increase in surface roughness due to mild plastic deformation, without undergoing substantial material removal. When machining occurred, the ejection of material revealed a 3-fold symmetric pattern, confirming that material removal in waterjet machining of the metal workpiece is primarily driven by plastic deformation-induced material ejection. This research provides crucial insights into the mechanisms underlying waterjet machining and enhances our understanding of material behavior during the process. The findings can be valuable in optimizing waterjet machining techniques.

엡셋팅에 의한 냉간 압접의 결합 기구와 결합강도 (The bonding mechanism and bond strength of cold pressure welding)

  • The bonding mechanism and bond strength were investigated for the cold pressure welding of Al to Al, Cu to Cu and Al to Cu by upsetting. A phenomenon of bonding betweenthe metallic components has been observed by a scanning electron microscope and metallurgical microscope. A modified equation for bond strength with respect to the reduction of height shows reasonably a good agreement with the experimental data. When the values of the hardening factor and threshold deformation for the given materials could be determined, the theoretical bond strength can be calculated.

  • The mechanical properties and bonding mechanism of aluminum, copper and mild steel have been determined in cold pressure welding. The brittle cover layer to be established by scratch-brushing plays an important role in bond strength and has an influence on the threshold of deformation. The cold pressure welding was achieved at 54% of height reduction in A1-A1, 75% in Cu-Cu, 56% in Al-Cu, and 74% in Cu-steel. The height reduction at which the bond strength of weld interface was the same as the tensile strength of base metal should be over 76% in Al-Al, 82% in Cu-Cu, and 78% in Al-Cu.

핵임계사고시(核臨界事故時)에 있어서 속중성자선량(速中性子線量)의 해석(解析) (Fast Neutron Dosimetry in Criticality Accidents)

  • 핵임계사고시(核臨界事故時)에 방출(放出)되는 속중성자(速中性子)가 산란중성자(散亂中性子)로 중첩(重疊)되어 있는 상태(狀態)에서 방사화(放射化) 및 발단방사화검출기(發端放射化檢出器)를 이용(利用)하여 속중성자(速中性子)를 측정(測定) 및 해석(解析)할 수 있는 한 방법(方法)을 제안(提案)하였으며 이 측정(測定)에 있어서 주요인자(主要因子), 즉(卽) 몇개의 발단방사화검출기(發端放射化檢出器)에 대(對)한 평균핵반응단면적(平均核反應斷面積)과 중성자당선량환산계수(中性子當線量換算係數)를 전자계산기(電子計算機)로 계산(計算)하였다. 그 결과(結果) 핵분열중성자(核分裂中性子)의 스펙트럼 측정(測定)에는 발단(發端)에너지가 높은 검출기(檢出器)가 유리(有利)한 것에 반(反)해 발단(發端)에너지가 낮은 것은 산란매질(散亂媒質)이 없는 핵임계장치(核臨界裝置)의 사고시(事故時)에 있어서 속중성자(速中性子)의 시적분선속밀도(時積分線束密度) 측정계(測定計) 유용(有用)한것 같았다. 그리고 유황(硫黃)의 (n, p) 핵분열(核分裂)에 대(對)한 평균단면적(平均斷面積)은 핵분열(核分裂) 중성자(中性子)의 해석적(解析的) 표현식(表現式)에 무관(無關)한 것 처럼 보였다 .그밖에 중성자당(中性子當) 선량환산계수(線量換算係數)의 변화(變化)는 핵분열(核分裂) 중성자(中性子) 스펙트럼의 해석적(解析的) 표현식(表現式)과 핵분열상태(核分裂形態)에 따라 민감(敏感)하게 변화(變化)되지 않은 것 같았다.
