PURPOSE. The porcelain fused to gold has been widely used as a restoration both with the natural esthetics of the porcelain and durability and marginal fit of metal casting. However, recently, due to the continuous rise in the price of gold, an interest towards materials to replace gold alloy is getting higher. This study compared the bond strength of porcelain to millingable palladium-silver (Pd-Ag) alloy, with that of 3 conventionally used metal-ceramic alloys. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Four types of metal-ceramic alloys, castable nonprecious nickel-chrome alloy, castable precious metal alloys containing 83% and 32% of gold, and millingable Pd-Ag alloy were used to make metal specimens (n=40). And porcelain was applied on the center area of metal specimen. Three-point bending test was performed with universal testing machine. The bond strength data were analyzed with a one-way ANOVA and post hoc Scheffe's tests (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. The 3-point bending test showed the strongest ($40.42{\pm}5.72$ MPa) metal-ceramic bond in the nonprecious Ni-Cr alloy, followed by millingable Pd-Ag alloy ($37.71{\pm}2.46$ MPa), precious metal alloy containing 83% of gold ($35.89{\pm}1.93$ MPa), and precious metal alloy containing 32% of gold ($34.59{\pm}2.63$ MPa). Nonprecious Ni-Cr alloy and precious metal alloy containing 32% of gold showed significant difference (P<.05). CONCLUSION. The type of metal-ceramic alloys affects the bond strength of porcelain. Every metal-ceramic alloy used in this study showed clinically applicable bond strength with porcelain (25 MPa).

In this study, an experimental study on the tensile properties of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high strength concrete(UHSC) with a standard compressive strength of 180MPa was performed. Steel fibers with a volume ratio of 1% were mixed to prepare direct tensile strength specimens and prism specimens for the three-point bending test. The fabricated specimens were set up in the middle section of the specimen to induce cracks, and the test was carried out according to each evaluation method. First, the stress-strain curves were analyzed by performing direct tensile strength tests to investigate the behavior characteristics of concrete after cracking. In addition, the load-CMOD curve was obtained through the three-point bending test, and the inverse analysis was performed to evaluate the stress-strain curve. Tensile behavior characteristics of the direct tensile test and the three-point bending test of the indirect test were similar. In addition, the tensile stress-strain curve modeling presented in the SC structural design guidelines was performed, and the comparative analysis of the measured and predicted values was performed. When the material reduction factor of 1.0 was applied, the predicted value was similar to the measured value up to the strain of 0.02, but when the material reduction factor of 0.8 was applied, the predicted value was close to the lower limit of the measured value. In addition, when the strain was greater than 0.02, the predicted value by SC structural design guideline to underestimated the measured value.

In this paper the results of a series of experimental tests upon three-point bending specimens made of polystyrene and containing re-entrant corners are firstly described. Tests involved different notch angles, different notch depths and finally different sizes of the samples. All the specimens broke at the defect, as expected because of the material brittleness and, hence, the generalized stress intensity factor was expected to be the governing failure parameter. Recorded failure loads are then compared with the predictions provided by a fracture criterion recently introduced in the framework of Finite Fracture Mechanics: fracture is assumed to propagate by finite steps, whose length is determined by the contemporaneous fulfilment of energy balance and stress requirements. This fracture criterion allows us to achieve the expression of the generalized fracture toughness as a function of the tensile strength, the fracture toughness and the notch opening angle. Comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental data turns out to be more than satisfactory.
This paper focuses the strength and wear resistance of CVD diamond films. The strength of free-standing CVD diamond films synthesized by microwave plasm CVD, DC plasma CVD, RF plasma CVD and arc discharge plasma jet CVD has been measured by three-point bending test. The wear resistance of CVD diamod films has been evaluated by the pin-on-disk type testing. diamond films coated on the base of sintered tungsten carbide pin by hot filament CVD have been rubbed with a sintered diamond disk in muddy water. Volume removed wear of CVD diamond has been compared with stellite, WC alloy and bearing steel.
In this work, bisphenol type vinyl ester was impregnated into the three-dimensional glass fabrics fabricated from different thickness changes. Their mechanical properties of the specimens have been investigated by three-point bending and flatwise compression tests. Also, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) has been determined through short-beam test for the evaluation of interfacial adhesion at interfaces between fibers and matrix of the composites. The effect of thickness changes in three-dimensional glass fabric-reinforced composites have been described in this work.

A new thin sandwich panel composed of an aluminum expanded metal core adhesively jointed with stainless steel face sheets is introduced, and its mechanical behavior under three-point bending is investigated. The strength and stiffness are analyzed theoretically, and the press-formability and strength enhancement are evaluated experimentally. The specimens with the specific configurations exhibit face yielding well before face-core separation, which means that the sandwich panel can be formed by a press without failure. The measured load levels corresponding to the face yielding and the face-core separation agree fairly well with the theoretical estimations. For a given weight, the sandwich panel is superior to a solid panel in terms of strength, stiffness, and press-formability.
Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a self-polymerizing resin for removable orthodontic devices, has been used as a dental orthodontic device for many years because of its advantages such as color stability, volume stability, and tissue compatibility. However, such a removable orthodontic device has a disadvantage that the longer the use in the oral cavity due to the low strength of the PMMA fracture of the orthodontic device resin in use. In this study, zinc nanoparticles (ZNP) were mixed with orthodontic PMMA to introduce strength effect. Rectangular samples ($1.4{\times}3.0{\times}19.0mm$) of orthodontic PMMA (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0%) containing ZNP were prepared. The finished specimen was tested for three-point bending strength at a speed of 1 mm / min, and the Vickers hardness was measured three times using a hardness tester. The surface roughness was measured with a surface roughness. As a result, the 3-point bending strength did not change significantly (p>0.05). Surface energy increased significantly. As a result, we successfully synthesized ZNP in this study and prepared the dispersed resin specimen for calibration. It will be possible to develop high-density dental orthodontic resins.
The need for establishing the contribution of pultruded FRP encasements and additional FRP wraps around these encasements to the shear strength and load-deflection behavior of reinforced concrete beams is the main motivation of the present study. This paper primarily focuses on the effect of additional wrapping around the composite beam on the flexural and shear behavior of the pultruded GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) beams infilled with reinforced concrete, taking into account different types of failure according to av/H ratio (arch action, shear-tension, shear-compression and pure bending). For this purpose, nine hybrid beams with variable shear span-to-depth ratio (av/H) were tested. Hybrid beams with 500 mm, 1000 mm, and 1500 mm lengths and cross-sections of 150x100 mm and 100x100 mm were tested under three-point and four-point loading. Based on the testing load-displacement relationship, ductility ratio, energy dissipation capacity of the beams were evaluated with comprehensive macro damage analysis on pultruded GFRP profile and GFRP wrapping. The GFRP wraps were established to have a major contribution to the composite beam ductility (90-125%) and strength (40-75%) in all ranges of beam behavior (shear-dominated or dominated by the coupling of shear and flexure). The composite beams with wraps were showns to reach ductilities and strength values of their counterparts with much greater beam depth.

Alumina ceramic for textile machinery was sintered and subjected to three-point bending. A semicircular surface crack was made on each sample. Crack-healing behavior was systematically studied, as a function of crack-healing temperature and crack size. The bending strength and fracture toughness of the crack-healed sample from $1200^{\circ}C\;to\;1400^{\circ}C$ were investigated. A statistical approach based on Weibull distribution was applied to the test data to evaluate the dispersion in the fracture toughness. Alumina ceramic for textile machinery have the ability to heal after cracking, from over $1300^{\circ}C$. The material can completely heal a $65{\mu}m$ diameter semielliptical crack. The fracture toughness could be explained by 2-parameter Weibull distribution.
Transplanted cortical bone grafts of freeze-dried bones also function as sustaining for defected bones, however, it has less strength and is fragile without rehydration. In this study, strength and stiffness of freeze-dried bone from bovine cortical bones were evaluated by three point bending test according to different time frames such as rehydration times of 0.5, 3, 6, 12 and 24 hrs in electrolyte solution and was compared with those of frozen bones. The strength and stiffness of frozen bone were $264.4\pm36.7$ MPa, $17.0\pm1.5$ GPa, respectively. The strength and stiffness of freeze-dried bone which fat was removed by treatments of chloroform-methanol solutions for 6 days, then was freeze-dried at $-80^{\circ}C$ and sterilized with ethylene oxide gas, were $224.9\pm27.6$ MPa, $19.2\pm2.8$ GPa, respectively. The strength and stiffness of feeze-dried bone were decreased 15.0% and increased 13.2% than these of frozen bone, respectively. The strength and stiffness of freeze-dried bone rehydrated for 6 hrs were restored to 96.0% strength and 99.2% stiffness of frozen bone. The rehydration time of freeze-dried bone which had the highest strength and stiffness was six hours and three hours, respectively. The results of the mathematica program for the variation of the strength and stiffness showed 3 hours and 30 minutes of rehydration time in electrolyte solution for the best condition in the strength and stiffness which was adequate to treat freeze-dried cortical bone.
