The objective of this numerical analysis is to trace the hysteretic behavior of steel angles under very-low-cycle loading test, especially the history and cumulative state of local stress-strain at their critical parts. The computer model is based on a three-dimensional, non-linear analysis by using the finite element program, MSC/NASTRAN, which includes the effects of the material and geometric non-linearities. The analysis was performed as two stage procedures, namely Analysis I and II. The overall behavior from this analysis showed good agreement with the experiment.
The accurate dynamic analysis of structures is usually performed by a fine finite element discretization with very large number of degrees of freedom. Apart from modal analysis, one can reduce the number of final equations by assuming the deformed shape of the structure as a linear combination of independent Ritz vectors. The efficiency of this method relies heavily on the vectors selected. In this paper, a new set of Ritz vectors is proposed. It is primarily proved that these vectors are linearly independent. Subsequently, various two and three-dimensional examples are analyzed based on the proposed method. In each case, the results are compared with the ones obtained based on usual Ritz and modal analysis methods. It is finally concluded that the proposed method is very effective and efficient method for dynamic analysis of structures in frequency domain.
In this paper, nonlinear static analysis of three-dimensional cable stayed bridges is performed for the time dependent materials properties such as creep, shrinkage and aging of concrete and relaxation of cable. Manavgat Cable-Stayed Bridge is selected as an application. The bridge located in Antalya, Turkey, was constructed with balanced cantilever construction method. Total length of the bridge is 202 m. The bridge consists of one $\ddot{e}$ shape steel tower. The tower is at the middle of the bridge span. The construction stages and 3D finite element model of bridge are modeled with SAP2000. Large displacement occurs in these types of bridges so geometric nonlinearity is taken into consideration in the analysis by using P-Delta plus large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Two different finite element analyses carried out which are evaluated with and without construction stages and results are compared with each other. As a result of these analyses, variation of internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge tower and displacement and bending moment for bridge deck are given with detailed. It is seen that construction stage analysis has a remarkable effect on the structural behavior of the bridge.
Tunnel construction is a complex three dimensional operation. Since, however, it is neither possible nor useful to simulate all conditions and parameters in detail, a simplified two dimensional model is commonly employed in practice. The simulation of three dimensional conditions by a two dimensional model should use empirical parameters. The numerical predictions indicate that analysis results are highly dependent on the parameters. An improved modelling method based on time was adopted to account for three dimensional effect at the tunnel heading and time dependent nature, and used to perform an analysis of tunnelling in decomposed granite. The effects of weathering degree, tunnel shape and multi-drift excavation were investigated by using the method. It is identified that a structural benefit can be obtained by adopting a horse-shoe-shaped cross section with multi-drift excavation in mixed-force ground condition.
The functions of diaphragms at abutments and piers of PSC box girder railway bridge are to transfer forces from the superstructure onto bearings or columns and to stiffen the superstructure cross-section against in -plane deformation. Due to stress disturbance at diaphragm, the design for the diaphragm using conventional design method is relatively irrational than those for other structural members. And, due to contribution to boundary condition of deck slab by the diaphragm, the behavior of deck slab near the diaphragm is different from that of the deck slab obtained from two dimensional analysis of the bridge, which is basis for the design of deck slab. In this paper, three dimensional behavior of deck slab near the diaphragm of prestressed concrete (PSC) box girder railway bridge constructed by the precast span method are analyzed by using three dimensional finite element modeling and using the strut-and-tie model design of the diaphragm are presented. The modeling techniques used in this paper can be applied effectively to examine the causes of cracks at deck slab near diaphragm and to design diaphragm rationally.
A package to transport high-level radioactive materials is required to withstand normal transport and hypothetical accident conditions pursuant to the IAEA and domestic regulations. The package should maintain the structural safety not to release radioactive material in any condition. The structural safety of the package has been evaluated by tests using proto-type or scaled-down models, however, the method by analysis is gradually utilized due to recent advancement of computers and computer codes. In this paper, to evaluate the structural safety of a radioisotope package of the KAERI, the three dimensional impact analyses under 9m free drop and 1m puncture were performed with an explicit finite-element code, the LS-DYNA3D code. The maximum stress intensity on each part was calculated and the structural safety of the package was evaluated in accordance with the regulations.

A two-dimensional thermal response and ablation analysis code for predicting charring material ablation and shape change on solid rocket nozzle is presented. For closing the problem of thermo-structural analysis, Arrhenius' equation and Zvyagin's ablation model are used. The moving boundary problem are solved by remeshing-rezoning method. For simulation of complicated thermal protection systems, this method is integrated with a three-dimensional finite-element thermal and structure analysis code.

This paper describes an automated computer-aided engineering (CAE) system for three-dimensional structures. An automatic finite element mesh-generation technique, which is based on fuzzy knowledge processing and computational geometry techniques, is incorporated into the system, together with a commercial FE analysis code, and a commercial solid modeler. The system allows a geometry model of interest to be automatically converted to different FE models, depending on the physical phenomena of the structures to be analyzed, i.e., electrostatic analysis, stress analysis, modal analysis, and so on. Also, with the aid of multilayer neural networks, the present system allows us to obtain automatically a design window in which a number of satisfactory design solutions exist in a multi-dimensional design parameter space. The developed CAE system is successfully applied to evaluate an electrostatic micromachines.
Building-level response to post-earthquake fire hazards in steel buildings has been assessed using primarily two-dimensional analyses of the lateral force resisting system. This approach may not adequately consider potential vulnerabilities in the gravity framing system. For this reason, three-dimensional (3D) finite element models of a 10-story case study building with perimeter moment resisting frames were developed to analyze post-earthquake fire events and better understand building response. Earthquakes are simulated using ground motion time histories, while Eurocode parametric time-temperature curves are used to represent compartment fires. Incremental dynamic analysis and incremental fire analysis procedures capture a range of hazard intensities. Findings show that the structural response due to earthquake and fire hazards are somewhat decoupled from one another. Regardless of the level of plastic hinging present in the moment framing system due to a seismic event, gravity column failure is the initiating failure mode in a fire event.
In the design of tall reinforced concrete (R/C) buildings, the serviceability stiffness criteria in terms of maximum lateral displacement and inter-story drift must be satisfied to prevent large second-order P-delta effects. To accurately assess the lateral deflection and stiffness of tall R/C structures, cracked members in these structures need to be identified and their effective member flexural stiffness determined. In addition, the implementation of the geometric nonlinearity in the analysis can be significant for an accurate prediction of lateral deflection of the structure, particularly in the case of tall R/C building under lateral loading. It can therefore be important to consider the cracking effect together with the geometric nonlinearity in the analysis in order to obtain more accurate results. In the present study, a computer program based on the iterative procedure has been developed for the three dimensional analysis of reinforced concrete frames with cracked beam and column elements. Probability-based effective stiffness model is used for the effective flexural stiffness of a cracked member. In the analysis, the geometric nonlinearity due to the interaction of axial force and bending moment and the displacements of joints are also taken into account. The analytical procedure has been demonstrated through the application of R/C frame examples in which its accuracy and efficiency in comparison with experimental and other analytical results are verified. The effectiveness of the analytical procedure is also illustrated through a practical four story R/C frame example. The iterative procedure provides equally good and consistent prediction of lateral deflection and effective flexural member stiffness. The proposed analytical procedure is efficient from the viewpoints of computational effort and convergence rate.
