Many PE (pre-erection) blocks are supported by wooden, concrete, or steel supports when they are stocked in the outdoor areas of a shipyard. Their positions and numbers are planned on the basis of the workers' experience. Recently, many shipyards have been making PE blocks with various shapes and weight distributions because of the variety of ships and building technologies. Therefore, it is now necessary to deal with blocks that they have no experience with. We propose a method to conveniently and quickly evaluate the structural safety of PE block supports, without the need for special knowledge and technology related to structural analysis. This method can reduce the large number of man hours (MH) normally needed for the analysis. The three-dimensional grillage analysis is performed for a simplified grillage model of a PE block. For efficiency, the grillage model of the PE block is automatically built from its three-dimensional CAD model, and its weight is also automatically distributed on the grillage model. The integrated system has been comprehensively implemented to perform the grillage analysis for the reaction forces on block supports. This paper describes how to make a grillage model of a PE block and estimate the weight distribution of the block on this grillage model. These steps are verified by comparing the supports reaction forces to those of the 3D finite element analysis for the PE blocks that are provided by a shipyard.
Rapid mold heating has been recent issue to enable the injection molding of thin-walled parts or micro/nano structures. High-frequency induction is an efficient way to heat mold surface by electromagnetic induction in a non-contact manner, and has been recently applied to the injection molding due to its capability of rapid heating and cooling of mold surface. The present study covers a three-dimensional finite element analysis to investigate heating efficiency and structural safety of the induction heating process of an injection mold. To simulate the induction heating process, an integrated simulation method is proposed by effectively connecting an electromagnetic field analysis, a transient heat transfer analysis and a thermal stress analysis. The estimated temperature changes are compared with experimental measurements for various types of induction coil, from which heating efficiency according to the coil shape is discussed. The resulting thermal stress distributions of the mold plate for various types of induction coils are also evaluated and discussed in terms of the structural safety.

The displacements of steel deck bridge due to construction step are measured, and three dimensional analysis with full modeling is carried out to compare with the measured results. Three dimensional structural analyses considering construction step by large block construction method are accomplished with verified model. The conclusions are as follows. 1. Comparing the data of grid analysis with the result of 3D full modeling in steel deck bridge, the design method using grid analysis has a limit for describing the displacements of curved bridge. The analysis of 3D full modeling has been proved as more accurate method. The differentiation of results in two methods is about 10%~20%. 2. It is verified that the maximum displacement of during construction is 1.7 times larger than the displacement of final construction. 3. The bridge behavior considering the construction step is somewhat different from that of final stage in whole structure and the displacement and stress during construction is larger than that of final construction. Therefore, it needs the reasonable structural design considering the construction step to get economical efficiency and a high competitive construction.
This paper compares and investigates the vibration and noise characteristics through simulations of 12/8 and 6/4 switched reluctance motors (SRMs). The radial force which is the main source of vibration is computed from two-dimensional(2D) transient magnetic finite element analysis (FEA) and compared in both time and frequency domain. At the same output power, the radial force of 6/4 SRM is found to be more than two times as that one of 12/8 SRM. Three-dimensional structural finite-element analysis (3D FEA) is used to study the mechanical characteristics. It can be concluded from static structural analysis that the maximum total deformation could be reduced to 1/26 if the motor is designed with 12/8 structure instead of 6/4. The dominant vibration modes are verified by modal analysis.

The frame element is commonly used for construction stage analysis PSC bridges. However, the frame element does not show sufficient information in the curved PSC box bridges. For the case of curved PSC bridges, the deformations in the inner and outer web are different. In this case, the different jacking forces are required in the inner and outer webs. And it is impossible to calculate different jacking forces in the inner and outer webs if we use the frame element for construction stage analysis. In order to overcome this problem, the use of shell element is essential for a three-dimensional construction stage analysis of PSC bridges. In the following, the formulation of an assumed strain shell element and its application of PSC box girder bridge analysis are presented.
This paper investigates the load model for single footfall trace of human walking. A large amount of single person walking load tests were conducted using the three-dimensional gait analysis system. Based on the experimental data, Fourier series functions were adopted to model single footfall trace in three directions, i.e. along walking direction, direction perpendicular to the walking path and vertical direction. Function parameters such as trace duration time, number of Fourier series orders, dynamic load factors (DLFs) and phase angles were determined from the experimental records. Stochastic models were then suggested by treating walking rates, duration time and DLFs as independent random variables, whose probability density functions were obtained from experimental data. Simulation procedures using the stochastic models are presented with examples. The simulated single footfall traces are similar to the experimental records.

In the present study, effective hydrodynamic pressure modeling methods for three-dimensional earthquake safety analysis of a dam intake tower structure are investigated. Time history analysis results using the Westergaard added mass and Chopra added mass methods are compared with the one by the CASI (Coupled Acoustic Structural Interaction) method, which is accepted as giving almost exact solutions, to evaluate the difference in displacement response, stress and dynamic eccentricity. The 3D time history analysis of a realistic intake tower, which has the standard geometry widely used in Korea, shows that the Chopra added mass method gives similar results in displacement and stress and less conservative results in dynamic eccentricity to CASI ones, while the Westergaard added mass yields much more conservative results in all measures. This study suggests to use the CASI method directly for three-dimensional earthquake safety analysis of a dam intake tower, if computationally possible.
To investigate the mechanical behavior of the post-tensioned prestressed concrete lining (PPCL), the desilting tunnel of the Xiaolangdi Hydro Project in China is adopted as a case, and a detailed three-dimensional continuum model verified by the observation results is established for the PPCL. The radial stresses, longitudinal stresses, axial forces and bending moments of the PPCL under the completed cable tension condition (CCTC) and design water pressure condition (DWPC) are analyzed, respectively. The numerical results reveal that the PPCL concrete is significantly compressed in the circumferential direction by the prestress, while the prestress has a negligible influence on the radial stresses of the PPCL concrete. It should be noted that the concrete near the anchor slots has a complex and adverse stress state with stress concentration, longitudinal tensioning and large bending moment. In addition, a simplified shell model and a further simplified beam model which can take the influences of the prestress loss and the anchor slot into consideration are proposed for the PPCL. The results of the simplified models are in a good agreement with these of the three-dimensional continuum model, and they can be used as efficient approaches for the structural design and analysis of the PPCL.
A general step-by-step simulation for the time-dependent analysis of segmentally-erected prestressed concrete box-girder bridges is presented. A three dimensional finite-element model for the balanced-cantilever construction of segmental bridges, including effects of the load history, material nonlinearity, creep, shrinkage, and aging of concrete and the relaxation of prestressing steel was developed using ABAQUS software. The models included three-dimensional shell elements to model the box-girder walls and Rebar elements representing the prestressing tendons. The step-by-step procedure allows simulating the construction stages, effects of time-dependent deformations of materials and changes in the structural system of the bridges. The structural responses during construction and throughout the service life were traced. A comparison of the developed computer simulation with available experimental results was conducted and good agreement was found. Deflection of the bridge deck, changes in stresses and strains and the redistribution of internal forces were calculated for different examples of bridges, built by the balanced-cantilever method, over thirty-year duration. Significant time-dependent effects on the bridge deflections and redistribution of internal forces and stresses were observed. The ultimate load carrying capacities of the bridges and the behavior before collapse were also determined. It was observed that the ultimate load carrying capacity of such bridges decreases with time as a result of time-dependent effects.
This work addresses a three-dimensional nonlinear structural analysis of the constructive phases of a cable-stayed segmental concrete bridge using The Finite Element Method through ANSYS, version 14.5. New subroutines have been added to ANSYS via its UPF customization tool to implement viscoelastoplastic constitutive equations with cracking capability to model concrete's structural behavior. This numerical implementation allowed the use of three-dimensional twenty-node quadratic elements (SOLID186) with the Element-Embedded Rebar model option (REINF264), conducting to a fast and efficient solution. These advantages are of fundamental importance when large structures, such as bridges, are modeled, since an increasing number of finite elements is demanded. After validating the subroutines, the bridge located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and known as "Ponte do Saber" (Bridge of Knowledge, in Portuguese), has been numerically modeled, simulating each of the constructive phases of the bridge. Additionally, the data obtained numerically is compared with the field data collected from monitoring conducted during the construction of the bridge, showing good agreement.
