  • The safety of a structure can be improved by applying the three dimensional passive earth pressure. Because the three dimensional passive earth pressure is much larger than the two dimensional passive earth pressure and it is determined by the size(width B and height H) and the wall frictional angle of the resistant wall. Therefore, the three dimensional passive resistance behavior was studied through the model tests in sandy ground, where the size of the resistant wall and the wall frictional angle were varied. The results show that three dimensional passive earth pressure is 1.1∼3.4 times larger than that of the two dimensional value depending on the wall size and the wall friction.

  • For higher-level requirements of urban planning and management and the recent development of "digital earth" and "digital city", it is urgent to establish protocols for the construction of three-dimensional digital city models. However, some problems still exist in the digital technology of the three-dimensional city model, such as insufficient precision of the three-dimensional model, not optimizing the scene and not considering the constraints of building codes. In view of those points, a method to interactively simulate a virtual city scene based on building codes is proposed in this paper. Firstly, some constraint functions are set up to restrict the models to adhere to the building codes, and an improved directional bounding box technique is utilized to solve the problem that geometric objects may intersect in a virtual city scene. The three-dimensional model invocation strategy is designed to convert two-dimensional layouts to a three-dimensional urban scene. A Leap Motion hardware device is used to interactively place the 3D models in a virtual scene. Finally, the design and construction of the three-dimensional scene are completed by using Unity3D. The experiment shows that this method can simulate urban virtual scenes that strictly adhere to building codes in a virtual scene of the city environment, but also provide information and decision-making functions for urban planning and management.

  • We present a three-dimensional average flow model considering elastic deformation of pad asperities for chemical mechanical planarization. To consider the contact deformation of pad asperities in the calculation of the flow factor, three-dimensional contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions is conducted from computer generated three dimensional roughness data. The average Reynolds equation and the boundary condition of both force and momentum balance are used to investigate the effect of pad roughness and external pressure conditions on film thickness and wafer position angle.

  • In this paper we study the problem of three-dimensional layout optimization on the simplified rotating vessel of satellite. The layout optimization model with behavioral constraints is established and some effective and convenient conditions of performance optimization are presented. Moreover, we prove that the performance objective function is locally Lipschitz continuous and the results on the relations between the local optimal solution and the global optimal solution are derived.

  • Three-dimensional imaging and manipulation of CT data are becoming increasingly important for deterRing the complex structure and pathologies. Octree which is a hierarchical data model is used to reconstruct three- dimensional objects from CT scans. Orthogonal cross sections are displayed by traverse the octree partially. Arbitrary oblique planes are derived by intersecting the square region of plane and cubic volume of octal node. Thia method enables the display of multi-structured complex organ ann the realization by personal computer.

  • The purpose of this work is to present three-dimensional models of plain fabrics having various warp and filling yarn diameters. In order to simulate a woven fabric, a 3-dimensional CAD software with NURBS modeling capability was used. Final rendering was performed on the fabric model. It was demonstrated that the changes in yarn diameter could be three-dimensionally modeled through the use of fabric geometry and the 3D CAD. A short RhinoScript program was composed to implement the data importing and model building on the 3D CAD.

  • A numerical model was developed for simulating a three-dimensional multilayer hydrodynamic and thermodynamic model in domains with irregular bottom topography. The model was designed for examining the interactions between flow and topography. The model was based on the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and was solved using the fractional step method, which combines the finite difference method in the horizontal plane and the finite element method in the vertical plane. The numerical techniques were described and the model test and application were presented. For the model application to the northern part of Ariake Sea, the hydrodynamic and thermodynamic results were predicted. The numerically predicted amplitudes and phase angles were well consistent with the field observations.

  • Three-dimensional flow analysis was performed by using the control volume finite-element method for design of a profile extrusion die. Because polymer melt behavior is complicated and cross-sectional shape of the profile extrusion die is changing continuously, the fluid flow within the die must be analyzed three-dimensionally. A commercially available polypropylene is used for theoretical and experimental investigations. Material properties are assumed to be constant except for the viscosity. The 5-constant modified Cross model is used for the numerical analysis. A test problem is examined in order to verify the accuracy of the numerical method. Simulations are performed for conditions of three different screw speeds and three different die temperatures. Predicted pressure distribution is compared with the experimental measurements and the results of the previous two-dimensional study. The computational results obtained by using three dimensional CVFEM agree with the experimental measurements and are more accurate than those obtained by using the two-dimensional cross-sectional method. The velocity profiles and the temperature distributions within several cross-sections of the die are given as contour plots.

  • Inflow broadband noise is generated when turbulence in the rotor wakes impinges on the downstream stator vanes. In this paper a three-dimensional model is developed to investigate the broadband noise due to turbulence-cascade interaction. In the newly-developed model, we consider the effects of incident turbulent gust component in span-wise direction on the inflow broadband noise. The quasi-three-dimensional theory is deduced based on the tonal analytic theory of Smith (1972) and two-dimensional broadband noise generalization by Cheong et al. (2006; 2009). Extending the modified LINSUB code, quasi-three-dimensional computational results are presented. Finally, we compare these computational results with time-domain results to validate the theory.
