The transition from steady laminar to chaotic convection in a glass melting furnace specified by upper surface temperature distribution has been studied by the direct numerical analysis of the two and three-dimensional time dependent Navier-Stokes equations. The thermal instability of convection roll may take place when modified Rayleigh number($Ra_m$) is larger than $9.71{\times}10^4$. It is shown that the basic flows in a glass melting furnace are steady laminar, unsteady periodic, quasi-periodic or chaotic flow. The dimensionless time scale of unsteady period is about the viscous diffusion time, ${\tau}_d=H^2/{\nu}_0$. Through primary and secondary instability analyses the fundamental unsteady feature in a glass melting furnace is well defined as the unsteady periodic or weak chaotic flow.
The objective of the present study is to analyze the fluid flow with moving boundary using a finite element method. The algorithm uses a fractional step approach that can be used to solve low-speed flow with large density changes due to intense temperature gradients. The explicit Lax-Wendroff scheme is applied to nonlinear convective terms in the momentum equations to prevent checkerboard pressure oscillations. The ALE (Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) method is adopted for moving grids. The numerical algorithm in the present study is validated for two-dimensional unsteady flow in a driven cavity and a natural convection problem. To extend the present numerical method to engine simulations, a piston-driven intake flow with moving boundary is also simulated. The density, temperature and axial velocity profiles are calculated for the three-dimensional unsteady piston-driven intake flow with density changes due to high inlet fluid temperatures using the present algorithm. The calculated results are in good agreement with other numerical and experimental ones.

Holographic interferornetric tomography can provide reconstruction of instantaneous three dimensional gross flow fields. The technique however confronts ill-posed reconstruction problems in practical applications. Experimental data are usually limited in projection and angular scanning when a field is captured instantaneously or under the obstruction of test models and test section enclosures. An algorithm, based on a series expansion method, has been developed to improve the reconstruction under the ill-posed conditions. A three-dimensional natural convection flow around two interacting isothermal cubes is experimentally investigated. The flow can provide a challenging reconstruction problem and lend itself to accurate numerical solution for comparison. The refractive index fields at two horizontal sections of the thermal plume with and without an opaque object are reconstructed at a limited view angle of 80" The experimental reconstructions are then compared with those from numerical calculation and thermocouple thermometry. It confirms that the technique is applicable to reconstruction of reasonably complex, three-dimensional flow fields.elds.
This paper presents a Finite Element Method (FEM) application to thermal study of natural three layers of human dermal parts of varying properties. This paper carries out investigation of temperature distributions in these layers namely epidermis, dermis and under lying tissue layer. It is assumed that the outer skin is exposed to atmosphere and the loss of heat due to convection, radiation and evaporation of water have also been taken into account. The computations are carried out for one dimensional unsteady state case and the shape functions in dermal parts have been considered to be quadratic. A Finite Element scheme that uses the Crank-Nicolson method is used to solve the problem and the results computed have been exhibited graphically.

The numerical study was carried out to effectively cool Induction motor applied to a washing machine. The outer rotor made of steel periodically spins up and down. The stator consists of the thin layered iron plates and copper coil. The effective cooling system is necessary to solve the reliability problem caused by the electric losses at the coil and the iron plate. Because the heat transfer rate of the natural convection in partially open space is generally low, thus it is necessary to enhance the heat transfer using rotating perforated plate. The flow phenomena around the motor are very complex due to the motor geometry and the outer rotor motion. The mixed convection takes place due to the slow rotation speed. The three dimensional flow simulation was performed using rotating reference frame technique and Boussinesq approximation but the radiation effect was neglected. It was found that the angle and direction of the cooling blades play an important role in the stator temperature.

A finite element code for the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is parallelized by vertex-oriented domain decomposition. To accelerate the convergence of iterative solvers like conjugate gradient method, parallel block ILU, iterative block ILU, and distributed ILU methods are tested as parallel preconditioners. The effectiveness of the algorithms has been investigated when P1P1 finite element discretization is used for the parallel solution of the Navier-Stokes equation. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional Laplace equations are calculated to estimate the speedup of the preconditioners. Calculation domain is partitioned by one- and multi-dimensional partitioning methods in structured grid and by METIS library in unstructured grid. For the domain-decomposed parallel computation of the Navier-Stokes equation, we have solved three-dimensional lid-driven cavity and natural convection problems in a cube as benchmark problems using a parallelized fractional 4-step finite element method. The speedup for each parallel preconditioning method is to be compared using upto 64 processors.
