It is important to predict the crash behavior of trains to improve their crashworthiness. This paper investigates the simulation of high-speed train crashes in three dimensions using multibody dynamics. At present, little is known about three-dimensional crash simulations. This study shows that it is possible to simulate overriding and lateral buckling, including results from one- or two-dimensional simulations. Several parameters, however, such as computational time and large deformation of structures, need further investigation.

As Simpson et al. (1990) emphasized the importance of the straining process in the stratification and mixing in the estuarine circulation process, various researches have investigated on the relative contribution of each process to the overall potential energy anomaly dynamics. However, many numerical works have done only for two dimensional modeling along channel or the short distance cross sectional three dimensional simulations as Burchard et al. (2008) and the estuarine channel was not simulated so far. But, in the study on the physics of shallow coastal seas, spatial dimension in the three dimensional way affects significantly on results of a particular numerical model. Therefore, the comparison of two and three dimensional models is important to understand the real physics of mixing and stratification in an estuary. Also, as Geyer and MacCready (2013) pointed out that the lateral process seems to be important in determining the periodic stratifications, to study such process the three dimensional modeling must be required. The present study uses a numerical model to show the signification roles of each term of the time-dependent dynamic equation for the potential energy anomaly (PEA) in controlling along and lateral channel flows and different stratification structures. Moreover, we present the relationships between the ${\Phi}$-advection, the depth mean straining, vertical mixing and vertical advection can explain well how water level, salinity distribution and across velocity 2D model are slightly different from 3D.

In order to determine whether three-dimensional effects exist in a pintle nozzle of axisymmetric shape, a three-dimensional numerical analysis was performed. The compressibility correction was implemented with the k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model to predict the complex flow separation transition in acceptable accuracy. Recirculation zones were observed at both the front end and rear faces of the pintle, and the flow through the pintle nozzle conveyed complex shock wave structures. Three-dimensional effects that resulted from the reasonable flow separation location were noted, and a trace of the transient pressure increase was observed, mismatched by a two-dimensional axi-symmetric analysis.
In this study, we conducted flume experiments to investigate the three-dimensional flow structures around a half-submerged spur dike in a straight open channel flume. The experiments were carried out under the two different Froude numbers, 0.10 and 0.18. The results were compared with the previous experimental result conducted for non-submerged spur dike. Three-dimensional instantaneous velocities were measured using Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV) and water elevation data were collected using ultra sonic distance sensor. The results show that submergence conditions of the spur dike largely influence the three-dimensional flow structures around a spur dike.

A full two-dimensional MOSFET simulator utilizing the Mixed Particle Monte Carlo method is introduced. Particle simulation for both electrons and holes are self-consistently coupled with Poisson 's equation. To demonstrate the performance of the simulator, steady state and transient state solutions of the terminal characteristics and the internal physical quantities are obtained for 0.25$\mu$m MOSFETs with three different structures` conventional single drain, LDD and GOLD MOSFET structures.

Arrangement of individual atoms and molecules with atomic precision and understanding the resulting properties at the molecular level are ultimate goals of chemistry, biology, and materials science. For the past three decades, scanning probe microscopy has made strides towards these goals through the direct observation of individual atoms and molecules, enabling the discovery of new and unexpected phenomena. This talk will discuss the origin of forces governing motion of small organic molecules and their extended self-assembly into two-dimensional surface structures by direct observation of individual molecules using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).

A three-dimensional numerical simulation is performed to investigate on a low Reynolds number mixed convection in a horizontal rectangular channel with the upper part cooled and the lower part heated uniformly. The three-dimensional governing equations are solved using a finite volume method. For convective term, the central differencing scheme is used and for the pressure correction, the PISO algorithm is used. Solutions are obtained for A=4, Pr=0.72, 10, 909, the Reynolds number ranging from $2.1{\times}10^{-2}$ to $1.2{\times}10^{-1}$, the Rayleigh number is $3.5{\times}10^4$. It is found that vortex roll structures of mixed convection in horizontal rectangular channel can be classified into three roll structures which affected by Prandtl number and Reynolds number.

Three-dimensional structures of detonation wave propagating in circular tube were investigated. Inviscid fluid dynamics equations coupled with a conservation equation of reaction progress variable were analyzed by a MUSCL-type TVD scheme and four stage Runge-Kutta time integration. Variable-$\gamma$ formulation was used to account for the variable properties between unburned and burned states and the chemical reaction was modeled by using a simplified one-step irreversible kinetics model. The computational code was parallelized based on domain decomposition technique using MPI-II message passing library. The computations were carried out using a home made Windows based PC cluster having 160 AMD AthloxXP and Athlon64 processor. The computational domain consisted of through a roundshaped tube with wall conditions. As an initial condition, analytical ZND solution was distributed over the computational domain with disturbances. The disturbances has circumferential large gradient. The unsteady computational results in three-dimension show the detailed mechanisms of multi-cell mode of detonation wave instabilities resulting diamond shape in smoked-foil record.
The static analysis of structures with arbitrary cross-section geometry and material lamination via a refined one-dimensional (1D) approach is presented in this paper. Higher-order 1D models with a variable order of expansion for the displacement field are developed on the basis of Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). Classical Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories are obtained as particular cases of the first-order model. Numerical results of displacement, strain and stress are provided by using the finite element method (FEM) along the longitudinal direction for different configurations in excellent agreement with three-dimensional (3D) finite element solutions. In particular, a layered thin-walled cylinder is considered as first assessment with a laminated conventional cross-section. An atherosclerotic plaque is introduced as a typical structure with arbitrary cross-section geometry and studied for both the homogeneous and nonhomogeneous material cases through the 1D variable kinematic models. The analyses highlight limitations of classical beam theories and the importance of higher-order terms in accurately detecting in-plane cross-section deformation without introducing additional numerical problems. Comparisons with 3D finite element solutions prove that 1D CUF provides remarkable three-dimensional accuracy in the analysis of even short and nonhomogeneous structures with arbitrary geometry through a significant reduction in computational cost.
This study lays emphasis on the development of efficient analytical models for a multistory structure with wings, including the in-plane deformation of floor slabs. For this purpose, a multistory structure with wings is regarded as the combination of multistory structures with rectangular plan and their junctions. In addition, a multistory structure with a rectangular plan is considered to be an assemblage of two-dimensional frames and floor slabs connecting two adjacent frames at each floor level. This modeling, concept can be easily applied to multistory structures with plans in the shape of L, T, Y, U, H, etc. To represent the in-plane deformation of floor slabs efficiently, a two-dimensional frame and the floor slab connecting two adjacent frames at each floor level are modeled as a stick model with two degrees of freedom per floor and a stiff beam with shear deformations, respectively. Three models are used to investigate the effect of in-plane deformation of the floor slab at the junction of wings on the seismic behavior of structures. Based on the comparison of dynamic analysis results obtained using the proposed models and three-dimensional finite element models, it could be concluded that the proposed models can be used as an efficient tool for an approximate analysis of a multistory structure with wings.
