  • Present experiments were undertaken in order to clarify the clinico-pathological characteristics of lead poisoning in goats. Twenty goats were divided into three experimental groups(A, B and C) and a control(D). The three experimental groups received diets contaminated artificially with 10(A group), 200(B group) and $1,000(C group){\mu}g/g$ of lead for 70 days, respectively. The control group received normal diets. Hair samples collected one or two weeks interval were examed for the lead content. On day 70. all the animals were necropsied and various organs were examined pathoanatomically. In addition, various organs were analyzed for lead, zine, copper, iron and calcium content by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. From these experiments following results were obtained ; The lead content of hair was significantly increased from the $42^{nd}$, $21^{st}$ or $14^{th}$ day in all the three groups, which showed significant correlation with lead content of liver and spleen. The lead content of various organs including kidney, liver, spleen, ileum, bone and abomasum were significantly increased in accordance with the lead contamination. The increase was most prominent in abomasal wall. The zinc and copper content of liver, brain, ileum, skin, kidney, lung or muscle were increased in B and C groups whereas the iron and calcium content showed no significant change. Pathoanatomically, degeneration or necrosis of proximal convoluted tubules of kidney, peripheral necrosis of liver, fundic gland necrosis of abomasum and cerebral edema were observed in B and C groups.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference of body composition, eating habits and dietary intake in three Sasang constitutions. This survey was carried out using anthropometry, a questionnaire about eating habits, and 24-hour recall of dietary intake on 45 male and 29 female students of the fifth grade at C elementary school. The results are summarized as follows: A total of 44.6% of the subjects were Taeumin, 35.1% were Soyangin, and 20.3% were Soeumin. The average weight, WHR, Triceps, Rhrer index and BMI in the Taeumin group were significantly higher than those of the Soeumin and Soyangin groups. The body fat mass (kg) and abdominal fat (%) in the Taeumin group were significantly higher than those of the Soeumin and Soyangin groups. The soft body mass (%) in the Soeumin group was significantly higher than that of the Soeumi and Soyangin groups. The Taeumin’s energy expenditure in physical activities was little high than that of the Soyangin and Soeumin groups, but the Soyangin’s energy expenditure in physical activities per weight was a little higher than that of the Taeumin and Soeumin groups. The calorie and most of the nutrient intake were lower than those of Korean RDA. In the case of males, most nutrient intake, except for fiber, carotene and vitamin C were high in the Taeumin. For females, most nutrient intake, except for calcium and retinol were significantly higher in the Taeumin group. Conclusively, anthropometry characteristics, body composition, energy expenditure in physical activities, eating habits and dietary intake are different among the three Sasang constitutions. This study suggests the possibility of using Sasang consitutions as a basis for providing nutritional education and health guidelines.

  • Objective: This study was performed to compare the clinical outcomes of GnRH antagonist (Cetrorelix) single dose and multiple dose protocols for controlled ovarian hyperstimulation with GnRH agonist long protocol. Materials and Method: From September 2001 to March 2002, 48 patients (55 cycles) were performed controlled ovarian hyperstimulation for ART using by either GnRH antagonist and GnRH agonist. Single dose of 3 mg GnRH antagonist was administered in 15 patients (17 cycles, single dose group) at MCD #8 and multiple dose of 0.25 mg of GnRH antagonist was administered in 15 patients (18 cycles, multiple dose group) from MCD #7 to hCG injection day. GnRH agonist was administered in 18 patients (20 cycles, control group) by conventional GnRH agonist long protocol. We compared the implantation rate, number of embryos, and clinical pregnancy rate among three groups. Student-t test and Chi-square were used to determine statistical significance. Statistical significance was defined as p<0.05. Results: There were no significant differences in ampules of used gonadotropins, number of mature oocytes, obtained embryos between single and multiple dose group, but compared with control group, ampules of used gonadotropins, number of mature oocytes, obtained embryos were decreased significantly in both groups. Clinical pregnancy rate and implantation rate were not different in three groups. There were no premature LH surge and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in three groups. Multiple pregnancy were occurred 1 case in multiple dose group and 2 case in control group. Conclusions: GnRH antagonist is a safe, effective, and alternative method in the controlled ovarian hyperstimulation compared with GnRH agonist. Clinical outcomes and efficacy of both single and multiple dose protocol are similar between two groups.

  • Previous studies have demonstrated an increase in bone mass and density with the use of bisphosphonate in osteoporosis. This agent acts as an inhibitor of osteoclastic activity, and results in increase of net osteoblastic activity. Currently, it has been reported that bisphosphonate has direct effect on osteoblast. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of alendronate on bone regeneration in defect of rat calvaria. The animals used for these experiments were 48 male rats, over 6-8 weeks old. They were divided into three groups according to the dose of alendronate($MK-217^{(R)}$, Merck, USA) administered. After the calvarial defects were surgically created, the rats received a peritoneal alendronate(0.25mg/kg) in group I, a peritoneal alendronate(1.25mg/kg) in group II, and a peritoneal normal saline injection in the control group. Three and six weeks later, blood was sampled and evaluated for alkaline phosphatase activity. The animals were sacrificed for histological observation and histometric analysis of the level of bone formation. The alkaline phosphatase activity was similar in three groups at 3 weeks of experiment. The activity at 6 weeks increased more than twice, compared to 3 weeks, and was slightly higher in group I than the other two groups. In histological observation, all the groups at 3 weeks, osteoblast rimming and new bone formation were observed along the defect margin. At 6 weeks, the defect was almost closed with new and more mature bone, but new bone is thinner than original bone in the central portion of defect. In histometric analysis, group I and II at 3 weeks showed significantly greater new bone formation than the control, and all the groups at 6 weeks showed similar amount of bone formation. These result suggest that alendronate administration in the dose of 0.25mg/kg and 1.25mg/kg promote osseous regeneration.

  • Purpose: In the previous in vitro studies the bone marrow stromal cells(BSCs) have shown the superior effect for wound healing activity than fibroblasts, which includes cell proliferation, type I collagen synthesis, and the production of bFGF, VEGF and TGF-${\beta}$ in chronic wound healing. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of BSCs and fibroblasts on wound healing activity in vivo, especially on collagen synthesis. Methods: The fibroblasts and BSCs were harvested from patients and cultured. The cultured cells were infiltrated into the pores of polyethylene discs. These discs were divided into three groups according to the mixed cells. In groups I, II and III the discs were loaded with no cells, fibroblasts and BSCs, respectively. Twelve discs per group(total 36 discs) were made for this study. After creating 6 pockets in the back of each rats, each discs was implanted into each pockets. At three time intervals from 1 to 3 weeks, the implanted discs were harvested for the histological and quantitative analysis. The amount of collagen produced was evaluated using ELISA. Statistical comparisons were made using the Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: There was great difference in the collagen synthesis among the three groups by the 1st and 2nd weeks. The BSC group showed highest collagen level, followed by fibroblast group and no cell group(p<0.05). The 3rd week specimens also showed greater collagen amount in BSC and fibroblast groups compared to those of no cell group(p<0.05). However, there was little difference between BSC and fibroblast groups. Conclusion: This result demonstrates that BSC has superior effect on stimulating wound healing than fibroblast, which is currently used for wound healing.

  • Background: Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a well-recognized congenital heart disease. Despite improvements in the outcomes of surgical repair, the optimal timing of surgery and type of surgical management of patients with TOF remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to assess outcomes following the repair of TOF in infants depending on the surgical procedure used. Methods: This study involved the retrospective review of 120 patients who underwent TOF repair between 2010 and 2013. Patients were divided into three groups depending on the surgical procedure that they underwent. Corrective surgery was done via the transventricular approach (n=40), the transatrial approach (n=40), or a combined atrioventricular approach (n=40). Demographic data and the outcomes of the surgical procedures were compared among the groups. Results: In the atrioventricular group, the incidence of the following complications was found to be significantly lower than in the other groups: complete heart block (p=0.034), right ventricular failure (p=0.027) and mediastinal bleeding (p=0.007). Patients in the atrioventricular group had a better postoperative right ventricular ejection fraction (p=0.001). No statistically significant differences were observed among the three surgical groups in the occurrence of tachycardia, renal failure, and tricuspid incompetence. The one-year survival rates in the three groups were 95%, 90%, and 97.5%, respectively (p=0.395). Conclusion: Combined atrioventricular repair of TOF in infancy can be safely performed, with acceptable surgical risk, a low incidence of reoperation, good ventricular function outcomes, and an excellent survival rate.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pre-etching on the bond strength of silorane-based composite specific adhesive system to dentin. Materials and Methods: Thirty human molars were randomly divided into 5 groups according to the different bonding strategies. For teeth restored with silorane-based composite (Filtek Silorane, 3M ESPE), the specific self-etching adhesive system (Adhesive System P90, 3M ESPE) was used with and without pre-etching (Pre-etching/Silorane and Silorane groups). Teeth restored with methacrylate based-composite (Filtek Z250, 3M ESPE) were hybridized with the two-step self-etching system (Clearfil SE Bond, Kuraray), with and without pre-etching (Pre-etching/Methacrylate and Methacrylate groups), or three-step adhesive system (Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, 3M ESPE) (Three-step/Methacrylate group) (n = 6). The restored teeth were sectioned into stick-shaped test specimens ($1.0{\times}1.0mm$), and coupled to a universal test machine (0.5 mm/min) to perform microtensile testing. Results: Pre-etching/Methacrylate group presented the highest bond strength values, with significant difference from Silorane and Three-step/Methacrylate groups (p < 0.05). However, it was not significantly different from Pre-etching/Silorane and Methacrylate groups. Conclusions: Pre-etching increased bond strength of silorane-based composite specific adhesive system to dentin.

  • This study investigates whether women's wear brands' sizing systems reflect the body size and shape of their target age customers. This study classified 17 women's wear brands into three target age groups (20-30s, 30-40s, and 40-50s) and surveyed their body sizing systems for jacket items. The distribution of bust circumference and hip circumference of brands' sizing systems were compared with the size distribution of women in the 7th SizeKorea data. The brands targeting 20-30s fully produced five sizes which are the highest coverage rate, but the brands targeting 30-40s produced three sizes, and the brands targeting 40-50s produced one size. Regarding the body types, 60.0% of 20-30s target brands and 42.9% of 30-40s target brands reflected N type which is the average body type of each age group. However, the rest of the brands, including all 40-50s target brands, reflected A type which covered small portions of women. For each age group, 6 sizes with 24.0-29.0% coverage rates were proposed. With regard to the 88-94 size, three age groups overlapped: the 82-91 size was overlapped between the 20-30s and the 30-40s groups along with the 85-91 and 88-91 sizes that overlapped between the 30-40s and 40-50s groups.
