다리기형(ALD)은 다리가 정중선에서 벗어나 측면으로 회전변형 된 것을 의미하고 망아지에 흔한 선천적 결손이다. 30일령의 Thoroughbred 망아지가 한국마사회 제주목장 동물병원으로 내원하였다. 방사선 검사에서 양 앞다리가 각각 외측으로 변형되었고 오른앞다리가 왼앞다리보다 심하게 회전된 것을 확인하여 단일나사고정술과 골막박리술을 이용하여 교정수술을 하였다. 40일 후 나사를 제거하였고 술부의 섬유화 및 과잉교정 등 합병증이 없이 바르게 교정되었다. 이 결과로 국내 신생망아지에 isoflurane을 이용한 흡입마취에서 단일나사고정술과 골막박리술은 안전하고 효과적인 수술임을 확인하였다.

말의학에서 선천성 사경에 관한 임상병리학적 보고는 없었다. 본 연구의 목적은 선천성 사경을 동반한 신생망아지의 혈액화학을 평가하기 위함이다. Thoroughbred 망아지(암)가 341일의 정상 임신기간을 거쳐서 태어났다. 평가 결과는 다음과 같다. 혈액화학검사에서 CK (creatine kinase), LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) 그리고 Na은 상당히 증가하였으나 Cl는 심각하게 감소하였다. 결론적으로, 목근육의 세포는 망아지의 임상병리학적 수치에 영향을 미쳤다. 이는 선천성 사경의 원인이 경추와 같은 뼈의 문제뿐만 아니라 근육장애일 수 있다. 저자들이 알기로는 본 논문은 신생망아지의 사경증에 관한 최초의 임상병리 보고서이다. 이 자료는 선천성 결손을 가진 망아지의 임상병리 해석에 참고가 될 것으로 기대된다.

4개월령 더러브렛 암컷 망아지가 하악 치은의 큰 종괴로 인해 내원하였다. 증식된 종괴는 단단하고 황색 기미의 분홍색을 띠고, 하악 잇몸 전체에 분포하고 있었다. 암망아지는 종괴로 인해 입술을 다물 수 없었고, 방사선상 아래턱의 종괴 음영이 확인되었다. 종괴는 전신마취상태에서 외과적으로 제거되었다. 병리조직학적으로 잇몸 종괴는 증식된 잇몸 상피, 혈관이 발달한 교원성 기질 및 많은 골조직으로 구성되어 있었다. 이와 같은 육안 및 병리조작학적 특징을 토대로 하악 잇몸에서 발생한 골화성 치은종으로 확진되었다. 본 증례는 한국에서 더러브렛 망아지에서 발생한 골화성 치은종의 첫 보고이다.

말의 복지는 생리적 및 심리적 필요의 만족에 좌우된다. 본 연구의 목적은 말목장에서 펜스의 안전을 평가하기 위함이다. 행동장애(Cribbing)를 가진 Thoroughbred 수망아지 한 마리가 패독에서 폐사한 채 발견되었다. 패독의 펜스는 4개의 파이프로 만들어졌고, 망아지는 위에서 2번째 파이프를 무는 행동장애를 하였다. 그러나 그 망아지는 얼굴을 빼지 못하였는데 그 이유는 아래턱이 1번째 파이프에 걸렸고 앞니가 2번째 파이프에 끼었기 때문이다. 그래서 망아지는 얼굴을 빼기 위해서 사투하는 동안에 당황하였고, 쓰러졌으며 결국 교사하였다. 안전펜스는 말목장에 필수적이고 그 기능은 말을 보호하는 것이지만 위해를 가하였다. 말의 안전한 관리를 위하여 말 얼굴길이와 파이프의 간격을 고려하여야한다. 말이 패독에 있을 때 입마개를 씌울 필요가 있는지 더 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구는 말산업에서 펜스타입과 안전성평가에 중요한 벤치마크를 제공하였다.

An acute colic in a 6-month-old Thoroughbred filly is described. The filly was presented with acute colic haracterized by rolling and pawing. Over a period of days she suffered from severe abdominal pain and subsequently died. ost mortem examination revealed the ileocecal intrssusception as a part invagination of the ileum into the cecum. It seems ogical to assume that the invagination occurred at the start of the illness. In addition, it is also noted the presence of Parascaris quorum in the stomach.

A five-day old female Thoroughbred foal appealed mild edema and pain of a lower eyelid on left eye. She was diagnosed with a typical entropion which clinical signs were inward rolling of the eyelid edge and excess lacrimation. Modified Hotz-Celsus technique that resect and suture only skin was operated. Result was very successful without recurrence of entropion and other complications. We conclude this method is of value for permanent correction of severe entropion in young foals.

A two-month-old female Thoroughbred foal was referred to the Equine Hospital, Jeju Stud Fm, Korea Racing Association. The foal was presented with opening of the abdominal ring by congenital predisposition. In physical examination, the foal revealed a mild heating, fluctuant swelling at umbilicus. The umbilical hernia was diagnosed, and then modified umbilical herniorraphy was performed and resulted in successful treatment. We conclude this method is of great value within the six-month-old foal with hernial ring size less than 10 cm.

The present study was conducted to investigate the pattern of fracture of 50 Thoroughbred foals in Jeju from January 1997 to August 2001. A total 50 Thoroughbred foals were investigated to figure out the relationship between breeding condition and fracture. The fracture was diagnosed by physical and radiological examinations after lameness test. Most sites of fracture were limb, skull and vertebrae. Age analyzed that the most popular is the 1-year-old foals. Most places of the occurrence of the fracture were pasture, paddock, track and stable. Main cause of the fracture were play, training and foal's dam. These results suggest that there were the 1-year-old foals have a lot of fracture during play at pasture in winter.

A chronic wasting disease in a 10-month-old Thoroughbred filly is described. The filly presented with chronic colic, which was charactered by progressive loss of weight. Over a period of a couple of days the filly suffered from serious colic and subsequently. Post-mortem examination revealed the cecocolic intussusception as a total invagination of the cecum into the right ventral colon. It seems logical to assume this invagination occurred at the start of the illness. In addition, there were also Anoplocephalar perfoliata in the cecum and the right ventral colon.

In this report, we described a case of acute colic with uterine rupture in a Thoroughbred broodmare during parturition. A 14-year-old broodmare showed acute colic characterized by rolling just after delivering of a healthy foal. Large intestine was prolapsed through vulva, contaminated with soil and its serosa was heavily damaged. We performed a euthanasia according to the owner's request. Post mortem examination revealed about 15 cm rupture on ventral side of the uterus. In addition, the orphan foal follow his owner after necropsy on his dam.
