Field Treatments of Small Diameter Logs Using Sap Displacement Method (I) - Feasibility of Treatment Using Transpiration Method and Butt-end Method - (수액치환법을 이용한 소경재의 산지처리(I) - 증산법과 원구법을 이용한 처리 가능성 -)

  • This research was carried out to develop field treatment techniques of thinned small diameter softwood logs and less utilized hardwood logs using sap displacement method. In this paper, we report the feasibility of using transpiration method and butt-end method for the treatment of three softwood species and three hardwood species with preservatives, fire-retardant chemicals, and dimensional stabilizer. Butt-end method was effective as a field treatment technique compared to transpiration method when considered the treatability, easiness of treatment, productivity of treated wood, and environmental aspects related to chemical treatment, regardless of the combination of wood species and chemicals.

Influence of Tree Thinning on Vegetative Growth, Yield and Fruit Quality of 'Fuji'/M.9 Apple Trees in the High Density Orchard (고밀식 사과원에서의 간벌이 '후지'/M.9 사과나무의 영양생장, 생산량 및 과실품질에 미치는 영향)

  • As apple trees mature, it is important to maintain good light distribution within the canopy to produce marketable fruits. Tree thinning is the selective removal of a proportion of trees growing in the orchard to provide more growing space and a good light environment for the remaining trees. This study was conducted over 3 years (14-16 years after planting) to investigate the influence of tree thinning on vegetative growth, yield, fruit quality, and blooming in the 14 years old slender spindle 'Fuji'/M.9 apple trees planted with the tree space of 3.2×1.2 m. The trees were placed in a control group (no thinning; 260 trees per 10 a) or a tree thinning group (thinned 50% of the control; 130 trees per 10 a). The tree thinning successfully improved light penetration, yield per tree, fruit red color, and yield efficiency for 3 years, and the tree thinning controlled the occurrence of biennial bearing. However, tree thinning significantly decreased accumulated yield per 10 a compared with the control. The vegetative growth, yield per tree, soluble solid contents, and blooming were not clear by the occurrence of biennial bearing in the control. These results indicated that tree thinning was a good method for improving light penetration and preventing biennial bearing in the old 'Fuji'/M.9 high-density apple orchards.

Origin and Storage of Large Woody Debris in a Third-order Mountain Stream Network, Gangwon-do, Korea (강원도 산지계류 내 유목의 기원과 현존량)

  • This study aims to provide reference material for effective forest management techniques at the catchment scale, based on the field investigation of large woody debris (LWD) in 11 streams within a third-order forest catchment in Gangwon Province, Korea. To achieve this aim, we analyzed the morphological features of LWD pieces, and the storage and distribution status of LWD by stream order throughout the entire investigation. As a result, a total of 1,207 individual pieces of LWD were categorized into three types as follows: (ⅰ) 1,142 pieces (95%) as only trunk and 65 pieces (5%) as a trunk with root wad, (ⅱ) 1,015 pieces (84%) as non-thinned and 192 pieces (16%) as the thinned, and (ⅲ) 1,050 pieces (87%) as conifer and 157 pieces (13%) as broadleaf. Additionally, in-stream LWD loads (㎥/ha) decreased with increasing stream order, yielding 105.4, 71.3, and 35.6 for first-, second-, and third-order streams, respectively. On the other hand, the ratio of LWD jams to the total LWD volume increased with increasing stream order, yielding 11%, 43%, and 49% for first-, second-, and third-order streams, respectively. Finally, a comparison of the in-stream LWD load with previous studies in several countries around the world indicated that in-stream LWD load was positively correlated with forest stand age even though the climate, topography, forest soil type, forest composition, stand growth rate, disturbance regime, and forest management practices were different. These results could contribute to understanding the significance of LWD as a by-product of forest ecosystems and an indicator of riparian forest disturbance. Based on this, we conclude that advanced forest management techniques, including treatment of thinning slash and stand density control of riparian forest by site location (hillslope and riparian zone, or stream order), should be established in the future, taking the forest ecosystem and the aquatic environment from headwater streams to low land rivers into consideration.

Estimation of Timber Production by Thinning Scenarios Using a Forest Stand Yield Model (임분 수확예측 모델을 이용한 간벌 시나리오별 목재수확량 예측)

  • Forest stand yield and its changes along with 10 thinning scenarios were estimated using a forest stand yield model for six major tree species in Korea, such as Pinus densiflora in Gangwon province, Pinus densiflora in other regions, Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis, Quercus acutissima Carruth, Quercus mongolica. The 10 thinning scenarios were generated based on a number of constraints and assumptions. For instance, it was assumed that thinning is implemented between 15 years and 40 years with 5 year period and its duration should be at least 10 years. Also, the overall removal rate from the thinning treatments was assumed to be not greater than 60%. Under the 10 scenarios, the overall stand yield volumes from thinning and final harvesting were estimated for each species and site index. The results showed that highest yield volumes were obtained for Pinus densiflora in Gangwon province, Pinus koraiensis and Quercus mongolica when 30% of basal areas were thinned at 20 and 40 years, while highest yield volumes were obtained for Pinus densiflora in other regions and Larix leptolepis when 20% of basal areas were thinned at 20, 30 and 40 years. Those two scenarios gave the same amount of highest yield volume for Quercus acutissima Carruth. Also the results indicated that thinning treatment is effective to increase overall stand yield volume and its effects are larger with a higher site index. The largest thinning effects were found in Pinus densiflora in Gangwon province (28%) and Larix leptolepis (25%), while limited in Pinus koraiensis (12%). The forest stand yield model, used in this research, could be an effective tool for estimating the stand dynamics with various thinning treatments, but it could be improved in a further research that validates its applicability in the field.

Nutrient Dynamics in the Throughfall, Stemflow and Soil Solution of Korean Pine, Japanese Larch and Hardwood Stands at Kwangju-Gun, Kyonggi-Do (경기도(京畿道) 광주(廣州) 지방(地方) 잣나무림(林), 낙엽송림(落葉松林), 활엽수림(闊葉樹林)에서 수관통과우(樹冠通過雨), 수간류(樹幹流), 토양수내(土壤水內) 양료동태(養料動態))

  • The objectives of this study were to examine the amount of nutrient input by throughfall and stemflow, and the nutrient dynamics by throughfall, stemflow and soil solution among Piuns koraiensis, Larix leptolepis and hardwood forests including oaks at Kwangju-Gun, Kyonggi-Do. A total amount of rainfall during the study period was 1410.1mm. Of the total rainfall, 85% was from throughfall at the L. leptolepis stand, 84.5% at the thinned P. koraiensis stand, 83.2% at the unthinned P. koraiensu stand and 81.2% at the hardwood stand, showing greater throughfall at the conifer stand than at the hardwood stand. Stemflow showed 2.7% of rainfall at the hardwood stand, 1.3% at the unthinned P. koraiensis stand, 1.2% at the thinned P. koraiensis stand and 0.8% at the L. leptolepis stand, showing greater stemflow at the hardwood stand than at the conifer stand. Ion concentration of stemflow was greater than those of rainfall and throughfall. The conifer stand showed higher ion concentration than the hardwood stand both for cation and anion. The ion concentrations of throughfall and stemflow were higher in the descending order : $NH{_4}^+$-N > $K^+$ > $K^+$ > $Na^+$ > $Mg^{2+}$ for cations and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ > $NO{_3}^-$-N > $Cl^-$-N for anions. After the precipitation passed through the canopy, $K^+$ increased most at the hardwood stand, whereas $NH{_4}^+$-N did most at the P. koraiensis and L. leptolepis stands. The ion concentration of soil solution was higher in the descending order : $Ca^{2+}$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $Na^+$ for cations and $NO{_3}^-$-N > $Cl^-$ > $SO{_4}^{2-}$ for anions. $NH{_4}^+$-N and $K^+$ seemed to be supplied primarily from atmospheric deposition while $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Na^+$ from weathering.

Characteristics and Seasonal Variations in the Structure of Coleoptera Communities (갑충군집(甲蟲群集)의 구조적(構造的) 특성(特性)과 계절적(季節的) 발생소장(發生消長))

  • This study was carried out to investigate the structural characteristics of Coleoptera communities inhabiting the crowns of the Korean pine(Pinus koraiensis S. et Z.). Four plantations of the Korean pine, stand A (11 years old), stand B(21 years old), stand C(31 years old), and stand D(46 years old), were selected in Sudong-myen, Namyangju-gun, Kyeonggi-do. Sampling was done by knock down methods using insectide(DDVP), which was conducted from April, 1986 to September, 1987, except for the winter season. The following major conclusions are drawn from this study : 1. The total number of Coleoptera was 107 species of 85 genera in 35 families : 83 species of 66 genera in 27 families in 1986 and 74 species of 52 genera in 30 families in 1987. 2. The abundant families, based on the number of species, were Staphylinidae (16.8%), Coccinellidae(7.5%), Chrysomlidae(6.5%), Curculionidae(6.5.%), and Cerambycidae(5.6%). These five families occupied 43.0% of the total number of species. 3. The important families, based on the number of individuals, were Cantharidae(28.2%), Catopidae(27.7%), and Coccinellidae(23.0%). These three families occupied 78.9% of the total number of individuals. 4. The important species, based on the number of individuals, were Podabrus sp. (22.6%, C-antharidae), Catnps sp. 1 (21.7%. Catopidae), Anatis halonis (15.2%. Coccinellidae). Dominant species was Podabrus sp. (25.2% in 1986 and Catops sp. 1(24.9%) in 1987. 5. Generally, more spices and individual numbers were found in older stands than in younger ones. 6. The Coleoptera communities decreased in the thinned stand (stand C). Such a phenomenon in the thinned stand was likely to last two or more years. 7. The Coleoptera communities reached their peak of abundance in May, and decreased thereafter.

Differences of Photosynthetic Ability of Tobacco and Ginseng Leaves in Accordance with Light Intensity (광도에 따른 담배와 인삼엽의 광합성 능력의 차이)

  • Tobacco and ginseng plants differed in responses to varied light intensities. Tobacco showed high in CO$_2$ uptake and RuBPCase activity at 1900 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, being high by 3.7 times and 2.7 times than ginseng respectively. Close positive relationships existed between CO$_2$ uptake and RuBPCase activity in tobacco. However, ginseng showed negative correlation. The activity of glycolate oxidase and malate dehydrogenase in tobacco was high at 1900 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, but those of ginseng was high at 1000 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/. Nitrate reductase activity of tobacco at 1900 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/ was 2 times higher than that at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, while that of ginseng was no detected in all plots. The content of protein and chlorophyll in tobacco was 2.2 times and 1.5 times higher than in ginseng at the most efficient light intensity. The ratio of chlorophyll a/b in tobacco was low at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, while that of ginseng was low at 1000 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/. The relationships between protein and chlorophyll was high positive correlation. However, on 5 days after treatment, ginseng showed negative correlation at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/. Tobacco and ginseng showed different leaf soluble protein patterns on SDS-gel electrophoresis. The molecular weights of two major band were 50 KD and 15 KD in both plants. The major bands in tobacco were thinned at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, while those in ginseng thinned at 1000 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/ from 15days after treatment. Disappeared band was 45 KD at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/ in tobacco, but that of ginseng was 47 KD at 1000 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the important factors affecting the early natural regeneration of Pinus densiflora S. et Z. Seed germination, survival and height growth of the pine seedlings were examined at four experimental plots of P. densiflora forests including forest roadside. Plots I and III were thinned in 1992, plot II was treated with hexazinone in 1993 after seed tree method was applied in 1982 and 1989. Seedlings emerged after thinning and the rate of their emergence depended on forest floor conditions. Seedling survival was related with light conditions, herbaceous vegetation, and degrees of rainfall. More seedlings emerged in forest hauling roads than within the forest because soil scarification due to logging provided better conditions for seed germination and seedling growth. Seed supply was enough, but germination rate was very low in the forest compared with that in the greenhouse because micro-environments such as organic layer and herbaceous plant acted as limiting factors. Weed control was needed for 4 to 5 years until seedlings grew upto about 50cm in height which was similar to that of herbaceous plants. But 10-40% coverage of herbaceous vegetation was needed to protect small seedlings from heavy rain. Forest works such as thinning and logging, over 40% of light were important factors to help the pine regeneration. However, over 70% coverage of herbaceous vegetation, and heavy rain inhibited rather survival and growth of pine seedlings.

Optimum environmental condition of live container for long distance transport in live abalone Haliotis discus hannai (북방전복, Haliotis discus hannai의 장거리 수송을 위한 적정 수온 및 염분 조건)

  • We investigated the survival rate by water temperature and salinity, physiological rhythm and morphological change of live abalone to get to know optimum water temperature and salinity suitable for long-distance transportation of live abalone. At $8^{\circ}C$ and above, 96-100% of survival rate was shown at all experiment groups. At $6^{\circ}C$, 66% of abalones survived in normal seawater but they showed 0% of survival rate at $30{\pm}0.5psu$ and $26{\pm}0.5psu$ of salinity at the same water temperature. There was no significant difference of oxygen consumption rate for a week between the seawater and $30{\pm}0.5psu$. Also, a positive correlation was shown between salinity and water temperature and the oxygen consumption rate was slightly higher at $30{\pm}0.5psu$ than seawater. Thinned epithelial layers and expansion of lymph sinus were observed less than $30{\pm}0.5psu$ or below $6^{\circ}C$ of temperature. This result shows that the optimum level of water temperature and salinity is considered to be $6-8^{\circ}C$ and more than $30{\pm}0.5psu$ respectively.

Measuring Plate Thickness Using Spatial Local Wavenumber Filtering (국소 공간 웨이브넘버 필터링 기법을 이용한 평판 구조물 두께 측정)

  • Corrosion on the surface of a structure can generate cracks or cause walls to thin. This can lead to fracturing, which can eventually lead to fatalities and property loss. In an effort to prevent this, laser imaging technology has been used over the last ten years to detect thin-plate structure, or relatively thin piping. The most common laser imaging was used to develop a new technology for inspecting and imaging a desired area in order to scan various structures for thin-plate structure and thin piping. However, this method builds images by measuring waves reflected from defects, and subsequently has a considerable time delay of a few milliseconds at each scanning point. In addition, the complexity of the system is high, due to additional required components, such as laser-focusing parts. This paper proposes a laser imaging method with an increased scanning speed, based on excitation and the measurement of standing waves in structures. The wavenumber of standing waves changes at sections with a geometrical discontinuity, such as thickness. Therefore, it is possible to detect defects in a structure by generating standing waves with a single frequency and scanning the waves at each point by with the laser scanning system. The proposed technique is demonstrated on a wall-thinned plate with a linear thickness variation.
