  • Transmission electron microscopic study including single particle electron diffraction and morphological observation using replica and thin section was carried out for the Sancheong halloysite. Halloysite tube generally consists of inner circular and outer polygonal leaves. Primary triangular or concave voids are found between inner and outer leaves. Crosssection of halloysite tubes whose diameters are smaller than 500${\AA}$ are generally circular, whereas those larger than 500${\AA}$ are polygonal. Electron diffraction pattern of thick polygonal halloysite tube shows that it has a 2-layer monoclinic structure as suggested by previous workers.

  • In this paper, the computation of electromagnetic wave scattering is presented for chaff clouds which is widely used to protect an aircraft. The RCS depends on the wind, the aircraft velocity, and the atmospheric diffusion. It is assumed that the RF chaff is a thin dipole antenna and the RCS is calculated based on the scattering wave theory. The theoretical estimation and the simulation results are compared and shown a good agreement.

  • Aluminum, magnesium, titanium and high Mn steel are difficult to use in electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) sample preparation due to the formation of an oxidation layer under conventional polishing. Alcohol-based polishing with colloidal silica suspension was introduced for these delicate samples. A hard particle-embedded sample was analyzed successfully using mechanical polishing. Ion-milling was effective in removing oxidized, deformed and transformed layers after mechanical polishing and was able to reduce artifacts significantly. The microstructure of a cross-section of a thin copper film was evaluated by attachment of a dummy to the film for mechanical polishing.

  • The grain size of a cross-section of $8{\mu}m$-thick copper film was determined by electron backscatter diffraction analysis. Grain size distribution histogram showed the presence of a large fraction of small-sized grains, and the mean grain size was significantly affected by handling of them. A cut-off grain size, below which all grains are ignored as noise and eliminated for the calculation of the mean value, should be three or four times as large as the step size. Due to the presence of small grains, the linear intercept method derived larger mean grain size, which depends less sensitively on the cut-off grain size than the equivalent circle diameter method.

  • There have been developed a number of methods to assess the abrasivity of rock materials with the increased use of mechanized rock excavation. These methods range from determination of abrasive and hard mineral content using petrographic thin section analysis to weight loss or development of wear flat on a specified cutting tool. The Cerchar abrasivity index (CAI) test has been widely accepted for the assessment of rock abrasiveness. This test has been considered to provide a reliable indication of rock abrasiveness for isotropic rocks. However, a great amount of rocks in nature are anisotropic. Hence, viability assessment of Cerchar abrasivity test for the anisotropic rocks is investigated in this research. The relationship between CAI value and quartz content for the isotropic rocks is well known in literature. However, a correlation between EQ, F-Schimazek value, Rock Abrasivity Index (RAI) and CAI of anisotropic rocks such as phyllite was done first time in literature with this research. The results obtained with this research show F-Schimazek values and RAI values should be considered when determination of the abrasivity of anisotropic rocks instead of just using Cerchar scratch test.

  • To reduce the structural weight, thin-walled circular composite tube has been used as a main spar of high altitude-long endurance unmanned air vehicle(HALE UAV). Predicting the torsional response of stiffened circular spar is complex due to the inhomogeneous nature of section properties, which are dependent on fiber architecture and constituent material properties. The stiffener were placed in the top and bottom sectors of a tube to increase the torsional capabilities such as the rigidity and buckling strength. Numerical simulations were performed to estimate the effect of the stiffener on the torsional capacities. A static experimental test was performed on a stiffened tube, and the test results were compared with a numerical model. The numerical models showed good correlation and demonstrated the ability to predict the torsional capacity. Results presented herein will exhibit the effectiveness of stiffener on torsional strength and stiffness.

  • This research proposes a wind-lens turbine design that can startup and operate at a low wind speed (< 5m/s). The performance of the wind-lens turbine was investigated using CFD and wind tunnel testing. The wind-lens turbine consists of a 3-bladed horizontal axis wind turbine with a diameter of 0.6m and a diffuser-shaped shroud that uses the suction side of the thin airfoil SD2030 as a cross-section profile. The performance of the 3-bladed wind-lens turbine was then compared to the two-bladed rotor configuration while keeping the blade geometry the same. The 3-bladed wind-lens turbine successfully startup at 1m/s and produced a torque of 66% higher than the bare turbine, while the two-bladed wind-lens turbine startup at less than 4m/s and produced a torque of 186 % higher than the two-bladed bare turbine at the design point. Findings testify that adding the wind-lens could improve the bare turbine's performance at low wind speed.

  • This study aims at developing a torsional strength model based on a nonlinear analysis method presented in the previous studies. To this end, flexural neutral axis depth of a reinforced concrete section and effective thickness of an idealized thin-walled tube were formulated based on reasonable approximations. In addition, various sectional force components, such as shear, flexure, axial compression, and torsional moment, were considered in estimating torsional strength by addressing a simple and linear strain profile. Existing test results were collected from literature for verifications by comparing with those estimated from the proposed model. On this basis, it can be confirmed that the proposed model can evaluate the torsional strength of RC members subjected to combined loads with a good level of accuracy, and it also well captured inter-related mechanisms between shear, bending moment, axial compression, and torsion.

  • To assess the validity of the previously computed finite element analysis results, the photoelastic experiment was carried out to determine stress intensity factors for crack originating from thin section of integrally stiffened plates having discontinuous thickness interface. The stress intensity factors were deter- mined by using linear slope method of photoelastic data. Results are presented as variable thickness geometry factor. $F_{IV}$ , for various crack lengths and thickness ratios. The experimental values of F/ sub IV/are compared with 3-D finite element analysis results. The correlation between experimental values and analysis results is resonably good.
