  • The liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities treated on the Organic overcoat thin film surfaces by ion beam irradiation and rubbing method was successfully studied for the first time. The Organic overcoat layer was coated by spin-coating. In order to characterize the LC alignment, the microscope, pretilt angle, thermal stress, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) image was used. The good LC aligning capabilities treated on the Organic overcoat thin film surfaces with ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ above ion beam energy density of 1200 eV can be achieved. But, the alignment of defect of NLC on the Organicovercoat surface at low energy density of 600 eV was measured. The pretilt angle of NLC on the Organic overcoat thin film surface with ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ for 1 min at energy density of 1800eV was measured about 1.13 degree. But, low pretilt angles of NLC on the Organic overcoat thin film surface with ion beam exposure at energy density of 600, 1200, 2400, and 3000 eV was measured. Also, the pretilt angle of NLC on the rubbed Organic overcoat thin film surfaces was measured about 0.04 degrees. Finally, the good thermal stability of LC alignment on the Organic overcoat thin film surface with ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ for 1 min can be measured.

  • We report on the synthesis of highly uniform, single phase zinc and cobalt thin films prepared by the Liquid Phase Deposition (LPD) method. X-Ray diffraction, TGA and EDX measurements support the assumption that the as deposited films are constituted by a mixture of crystallized FeOOH and amorphous M(OH)$_2$ (M=Co, Zn) which is converted upon heat treatment in air at 600?C into the corresponding zinc ferrites. The films with adjustable chemical compositions are identified with a crystal structure as spinel-type and present a spherical or rod-like microstructure, depending on the both the nature and concentration of the divalent transition metal ions. Zinc ferrite thin films present a superparamagnetic behavior above blocking temperatures which decrease with increasing the Zn content and are ferromagnetic at 5 K with coercivities ranging between 797.8 and 948.5 Oe, whereas the cobalt ferrite films are ferromagnetic at room temperature with magnetic characteristics strongly dependent on the chemical composition.

  • Super hydrophilic $TiO_2$ thin films with photocatalytic property were successfully fabricated on a glass substrate by liquid phase deposition (LPD). The $TiO_2$ thin film formed nano particles on a surface at $70^{\circ}C$. As an immersion time in $TiF_4$ solution increased, the thickness of thin films gradually increased. $TiO_2$ thin film showed a water contact angel of below ca. $5^{\circ}$ and the transmittance of ca. 75~90 % in visible range. In addition, $TiO_2$ thin film showed the photocatalytic property to decompose methyl orange solution by the illumination of UV light. The surface morphologies, optical properties and contact angel of prepared thin films with a different immersion time were measured by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), UV-Vis spectrophotometer and contact angle meter.

  • We demonstrated an alternative electrically controlled birefringence liquid crystal (ECB-LC) system with ion beam (IB)-irradiated yttrium gallium oxide (YGaO) alignment films using a sol-gel process. The surface roughness of the films was dependent on the annealing temperature; aggregated particles on surface were observed at lower annealing temperatures, whereas a smooth surface could be obtained with higher annealing temperatures. Higher transmittance in the visible region was observed at higher annealing temperatures. The film had an amorphous crystallographic state irrespective of the annealing temperature. Furthermore, ECB-LC cell with our IB-irradiated YGaO film yielded faster response time when compared to ECB-LC cell with rubbed polyimide. Considering the fast response time and high transmittance, the IB-irradiated YGaO-base LC system is a powerful alternative application for the liquid crystal display industry.

  • Starting with cathode ray tubes, displays are forming markets in the order of active marix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED) after PDP (Plasma Display Panel) and LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). OLED is recognized as a key field for the development of each country preparing for the fourth industrial revolution, and especially Samsung Display and LG Display, which are the top industries in Korea, are leading the market with more than 90% of OLED shares. Currently, AMOLED has moved to the area that can be folded or bent. This technology is possible because TFT (Thin Film Transistor) and OLED may be formed on a flexible substrate. In the future, the technology will move to stretchable displays, and for this, the development of substrate materials is first, and then TFT and OLED devices should also be implemented with stretchable materials.

  • A numerical study on the melting process inside an isothermal spherical capsule is made. It is assumed that the phase change medium of its solid phase is heavier than the liquid phase and therefore the unmelted solid core is continuously moving downward on account of gravity forces. Such a gravity-assisted melting is commonly characterized by the existence of a thin liquid film below the solid core. The present study is motivated to present a full-equation-based analysis of the influences of the initial subcooling and the natural convection on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics associated with the gravity-assisted melting. In the light of the solution strategy, the present study is substantially distinguished from the existing works in that the complete set of governing equations in both the melted and unmelted regions are resolved without subdivision of the solution domains. For example, the liquid film region and the upper melted region are treated here as one domain and thus obviating laborious efforts to couple them. Numerical results are obtained by varying the Rayleigh numbers and the degree of subcooling. For the range of parameters examined, the presence of subcooling was found to impede the melting rate. The dropping velocity of the unmelted solid core was observed to affect the natural convection in the liquid significantly. When compared with the available experimental data, much improved prediction was achieved.

  • A new rod-like liquid crystalline monomer having divinyl terminal groups was synthesized and polymerized by using thiol-ene UV polymerization technique. High quality thin film with good retardation value was prepared on a rubbed alignment layer without the inert gas purging. The retardation value of the resulting film was controlled by experimental conditions such as spin speed, concentration, and spin time. From the retardation value and thickness measurement, ${\bigtriangleup}n$ was calculated to be 0.169 for the resulting film having thickness of 815.1 nm.

  • The fluid flow, mass transfer and film thickness variation during a wafer spin coating process are numerically studied. Governing equations for the cylindrical coordinates are simplified using the similarity transformation and solved efficiently using the finite difference method. Concentration dependent viscosity and the binary diffusivity of the coating liquid are used in the analysis. The time variational velocity components of the coating liquid and the film thickness are analyzed according to the various spin speed. When the evaporation is considered, the flow decease in the early times due to the increase of the viscosity and the resultant flow resistance. Effects of the two film thinning mechanism, the flow-out and evaporation are also considered in the analysis.

  • Laminar film condensation of a saturated vapor in forced flow over a flat plate is analyzed by using integral method. Laminar condensate film is so thin that the inertia and thermal convection terms in liquid flow can be neglected. Approximate solutions for water are presented and well agreed with the similarity solutions over the wide range of physical parameter, Cp1(Ts-Tw)/Pr.hfg. For the strong condensation case, it is found that magnitude of the interfacial shear stress at the liquid-vapor interphase boundary is approximately equal to the momentum transferred by condensation, i.e., ${\tau}_i{\simeq}\dot{m}(U_O-U_i)$.

  • We investigated the size effect on quench development in $Au/YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ (YBCO) thin film meander lines on sapphire substrates. The meander lines were fabricated by patterning YBCO films coated with gold layers. The lines were subjected to simulated AC fault current, and immersed in liquid nitrogen during the experiment. After the initial rapid rise, the resistance increased moderately and then slowly. In 4 inch-diameter meander lines, the period during which the resistance increased moderately was considerably longer than in 2 inch-diameter line. Moderate increase of resistance was originated from quench propagation. The film temperature was about 180 K at the point when the propagation was completed. The rate of resistance increase after the quench completion was not affected by the film size.
