This paper presents the validity and limitation of the thin-shell approach for the analysis of elastic wave propagation in a pipe with nonviscous liquid. The phase velocities calculated by the thin-shell approach were compared with those calculated by the thick-cylinder approach. In contrast to the case of the empty pipe, where only two modes were obtained and the first mode was calculated in a limited frequency range, the results for the liquid-filled pipe exhibits a large number of modes due to the large number of branches of the apparent liquid mass. Several of the lowest modes of the waves in a liquid-filled pipe were calculated for various pipe thicknesses in a low frequency range. The thin-shell approach was valid for a reasonable range of pipe thicknesses.
We determine analytically the onset of thin-shell formation time of fast wind bubble with power-law energy injection $E_{in}=E_0t^s$, and power-law ambient density structure, ${\rho}_0(r)={\bar{\rho}}(r/{\bar{r}})^{-{\omega}}$. Thin-shell formation time, $t_{sf}$ can be estimated by minimizing the total time elapsed before the complete cooling of shocked gas. For uniform medium (${\omega}=0$) and constant energy injection (s = 1), the onset of shell formation is found to be at $t_{sf}=5.2{\times}10^3yr$, which agrees Quite well with the results of FCT 1D numerical calculation. We solve the line transfer problem with previous result derived by numerical calculation in order to calculate line profile of [OIII] (${\lambda}=5007{\AA}$) forbidden line. In general, radiative outer shell causes the formation of double peaked line profile. Each peak corresponds to approaching and receeding shells with large velocities. Our line profiles show good agreements with observation of expanding shell structure.
A general analytical method for computing the joint stiffness from the sectional properties of the members that form the joint is derived using Vlasov's thin-walled beam theory. The analytical model of box T-joint under out-of-plane loading is investigated and validated using shell finite element results and experimental data. The analytical model of the T-joint is implemented in a beam finite element model using a revolute joint element. The out-of-plane displacement computed using the beam-joint model is compared with the corresponding shell element model. The results show close correlation between the beam revolute joint model and shell element model.
GMT secondary mirror system consists of 7 segmented adaptive mirrors. Each segment consists of a thin shell mirror, actuators and a reference body. The thin shell has a few millimeters of thickness so that it can be easily bent by push and pull force of actuators to compensate the wavefront disturbance of light due to air turbulence. The one end of actuator is supported by the reference body and the other end is adapted to this thin shell. One of critical role of the reference body is to provide the reference surface for the thin shell actuators. Therefore, the reference body is one of key components to succeed in development of GMT ASM. Recently, Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) and University of Arizona (UA) has signed a contract that they will cooperate to develop the first set of off-axis reference body for GMT ASM. This project started August 2021 and will be finished in Dec. 2022. The reference body has total 675 holes to accommodate actuators and 144 pockets for lightweighting. The rear surface has a curved rib shape with radius of curvature of 4387 mm with offset of 128.32mm. Since this reference body is placed just above the thin shell so that the front surface shape needs to be close to that of thin shell. The front surface has a concave off-axis asphere, of which radius of curvature is 4165.99 mm and off-axis distance is about 1088 mm. The material is Zerodur CTE class 1 (CTE=0.05 ppm/oC) from SCHOTT. All the actuator holes and pockets are machined normal to the front surface. It is a very complex challenging optical elements that involves sophisticated machining process as well as accurate metrology. After finishing the fabrication of reference body in KRISS, it will be shipped to UA for final touches and finally sent to Adoptica in Italy, in early 2023. This paper presets the development plan for the GMT ASM Reference Body and relevant fabrication and metrology plans.
The purpose of this paper is to show how the Evolutionary Structural Optimization (ESO) algorithm developed by Xie and Steven can be extended to optimal design problems of thin shells subjected to thermal loading. This extension simply incorporates an evolutionary iterative process of thermoelastic thin shell finite element analysis. During the evolution process, lowly stressed material is gradually eliminated from the structure. This paper presents a number of examples to demonstrate the capabilities of the ESO algorithm for solving topology optimization and thickness distribution problems of thermoelastic thin shells.
A free vibration analysis is made of a moderately-thick toroidal shell based on a shear deformation (Timoshenko-Mindlin) shell theory. This work represents an extension of earlier work by the authors which was based on a thin (Kirchoff-Love) shell theory. The analysis uses a modal approach in the circumferential direction, and numerical results are found using the differential quadrature method (DQM). The analysis is first developed for a shell of revolution of arbitrary meridian, and then specialized to a complete circular toroidal shell. A second analysis, based on the three-dimensional theory of elasticity, is presented to cover thick shells. The shear deformation theory is validated by comparing calculated results with previously published results for fifteen cases, found using thin shell theory, moderately-thick shell theory, and the theory of elasticity. Consistent agreement is observed in the comparison of different results. New frequency results are then given for moderately-thick and thick toroidal shells, considered to be completely free. The results indicate the usefulness of the shear deformation theory in determining natural frequencies for toroidal shells.
This paper presents an isogeometric discretization of Kirchhoff-Love thin shells using truncated hierarchical B-splines (THB-splines). It is demonstrated that the underlying basis functions are ideally appropriate for adaptive refinement of the so-called thin shell structures in the framework of isogeometric analysis. The proposed approach provides sufficient flexibility for refining basis functions independent of their order. The main advantage of local THB-spline evaluation is that it provides higher degree analysis on tight meshes of arbitrary geometry which makes it well suited for discretizing the Kirchhoff-Love shell formulation. Numerical results show the versatility and high accuracy of the present method. This study is a part of the efforts by the authors to bridge the gap between CAD and CAE.
0.4 Million tons of shell powder have been disused as waste in KOREA and caused severe environmental pollution though shell powder can be utilized in real life for many ways. It is impending problem to recycle shell powder as it requires high expense for burying and temporary outside heap and causes severe environmental pollution being a main factor of ocean waste. To suggest the basic data for development of eco-friendly and high-function Wall Coatings Thin Textured Finishes, a wall coating sample was applied to indoor walls of a mock-up and temperature and humidity were measured to assess the thermal performance of it, and a survey of preference for the color sense and feel of the materials with a movie of specimens. The results of the study are following; 1) High insulation performance is shown from the assessment result of the room polystyrene board adhered on the walls then high humidity controlling performance is shown from that of the room polystyrene board coated by shell powder. This point out that shell powder has superiority for humidity controlling. 2) The result of thermal and humidity assessment shows that shell powder makes up for thermal conduction of the polystyrene board and same result can be expected from the assessment with materials which has similar thermal characteristics with polystyrene.3) Ranking of preferred specimens is; 1st Case 13, 2nd Case 17, 3rd Case 16, and 4th Case 12. Preferred shell powder was the ark shell. Preferred powder for plaster was the powder mixed with that sifted by 0.8mm, 100mesh and 40mesh, and for spray was the fine powder mixed with that sifted by 100mesh and 40mesh.
The problem ofinstability of laminated circular cylindrical shell under the action of torsio or lateral pressure is investigated. The analysis is based on the Sander's theory for finite deformations of thin shell. The buckling is elastic for thin compoisite shell nad the geometry is assumed to be free of initial imperfections. The equilibrium equations are obrained by usitn the p[erturbation technique. Solution procedure is based on the Galerkin mehtod. The computer program for numerical results is made for several stacking sequence, length-to-radius ratio, and radius-to-thickness ratio. The numerical results of buckling load are present.
Recently, to improve the productivity in the continuous casting process, thin slab continuous caster which is one of the new steelmaking technologies by a high speed casting has been introduced. In the process of the thin slab continuous cast, there is more possibility than convnetional one that the deformation be occurred by the bulging of solidified shell, since the thickness of soliidfied shell is very thin as much as 60mm after the casting is finished. In some cases of severe bulging, there might be more breakout. In this paper, using finite difference method , solification analysis of slab is made as well as the thicknessof solidified shell and temperature are calculated. Also, based on the data of the calculated temperature, the deformed behavior of solidified narrow face is anlayzed with the MARC which is a package program for finite element analysis.
