  • The purpose of the study is to analyze the suitability of ready-to-wear apparels for adult women by considering their body types. 341 women aged from 20 to 60 were surveyed for this study. The survey was taken from November, 1999 through November, 2000. The subjects were classified into 4 groups(thin, normal young aged, normal middle aged, fat) according to BMI and Rohrer index. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, crosstabs, F-test, Duncan-test were used. As the result, it is our findings that, in purchasing clothes, especially in case of pants, people choose them mostly based on waist and hip. However, in that the normal young aged group bases thigh circumference, we need to consider such points. As for one-piece, height was an important factor, while chest was the most important factor for the fat group. In relation to the suitability of ready-to-wear garments, the groups showed significant differences for blouses, one-pieces, and jackets, respectively. Blouses didn't fit 29.8% of the fat group, and one pieces fitted thin or normal subjects to some extent. However, one pieces didn't fit 34% of the fat group while jackets didn't fit 51.4% of them. This result shows that there are difficulties in choosing clothes dependent on body types.

  • This study analyzed the effect of regular Taekwondo training for 16 weeks on physical fitness and growth index depending on different IGF-1 gene polymorphisms. The subjects of the study were 44 male students who were 8 year years old. The IGF-1 gene showed the highest frequency of 18 CA repeat (190 bp) in 50% of subjects, and was found in the homozygote (n=11), heterozygote (n=22) and non-carriers (n=11). The results of the physical fitness and growth index among the gene polymorphism groups indicated no significant differences but the expected height of the non-carrier group was significantly high (p<0.05). After Taekwondo training, the homozygote group and the non-carrier groups demonstrated significant (p<0.05) increase in grip strength and in time in the standing with one leg while closing eyes test, respectively. Only the homozygote group had a significant (p<0.05) increase in thigh circumference. IGF-1 concentration significantly (p<0.05) increased in the heterozygote group, while HOMA-IR significantly (p<0.05) decreased in the homozygote group. Furthermore, there was a significant (p<0.05) decrease in glucose in both the homozygote and the non-carriers groups. The difference between physical fitness and growth index depending on the IGF-1 gene polymorphism after Taekwondo training did not show consistent impact.

  • New EMS equipment and apparel have been developed to deliver electrical stimulation to the entire body at once. Textile or silicone electrodes are now replacing gel electrodes typically used in EMS equipment. This study analyzes the impact of design elements and electrode specifications of EMS smart clothing on comfort, mobility, and usability. Three types of EMS smart clothing were selected- whole body suits, top and bottom sets, and pants-and analyzed for product design, materials, and electrode pads. Subsequently, wearability evaluations were conducted on 10 participants. Results indicated that the EMS electrodes used in all three samples were silver(Ag)-based conductive materials, with some electrodes incorporating foam to improve skin adhesion. Wearability evaluations revealed that ease of wear and mobility were significantly influenced by product type and size. To improve appearance and comfort, EMS smart clothing should incorporate two layers or outer coverings. Additionally, the design should allow for adjustments in arm and thigh circumference, ensuring electrodes fit closely to the body.

  • This study aimed to analyze and categorize the leg shapes of normal-weight adult women in their 20s and 30s with the ideal body shape. In other words, it attempted to extract basic data necessary for developing pants patterns for adult women. Adult women were categorized into three leg types: sheep-legged, with thick and large knuckles and thighs but thin ankles and low ankle height; straight-legged, with thick ankles and knees and thin knuckles and thighs; and crane-legged, with normal leg and ankle thickness but thin knees. Developing pants patterns for adult women in their 20s and 30s suggests that sheep-legged women should use an outward curve instead of the inward curve found in conventional patterns to accommodate their thighs and provide extra leg space. Furthermore, straight-legged people should reorganize their drafting from a straight line from knee to ankle to a curved line that curves inward to reduce the amount of slack in the hip area. The crane-legged type requires a drafting method that sets less allowance at the knee. Moreover, new pants drafting methods should account for the unique characteristics of each type, including hip allowance and the inner and outer leg lines.

  • U.S. apparel brands are being imported to Korea more than any other country's apparel brands. Against this backdrop, this study intends to verify the fitness of U.S. apparels for Korean people in terms of size. To this end, the authors selected 25 American and 25 Korean women in their twenties and studied the differences of these two groups with regard to the size of their lower body parts. In addition, the authors analyzed how the size of each part of the lower body changes according to different postures. All the study subjects were required to be able to wear medium-sized pants of the U.S. apparel. The results of the present study are shown below. The American women were bigger than the Korean counterparts in leg length, hip circumference, thigh circumference, and all height-related sizes. However, the Koreans were bigger than their peers in lengths from waist to crotch; crotch length, body rise and the length from front waist point to hip line. Standing posture was used as a yardstick, when the changes in size according to the different postures were examined. The results indicate that hip and knee circumferences increased in the sitting posture. In particular, hip circumference significantly increased in the American women group. Regarding length-related sizes, increases and decreases in sizes for different lower body parts differed according to the posture. For a walking posture with ordinary strides, the front crotch length decreased while the back crotch length increased. This tendency was more notably observed for Korean women. The American woman clearly showed a decrease in outside leg length for all postures. The Korean women obviously presented an increase in the front center leg length for the sitting posture and for the posture where the knees were bent at $120^{\circ}$. The length from the front waist point to the hip line significantly declined in the Korean woman for the sitting posture and for the walking posture with ordinary strides.

  • This study was intended to provide basic materials for golf coaching by somatotype by analyzing and comparing the kinematic factors found in each somatotype at the time of golf swing. For this purpose, the somatotype was divided into endomorph, mesomorph and ectomorph in reference to the weight, height and upper arm circumference of each of nine professional golfers. Each of their swing motions was videotaped with the camcorder and their swing motion was analyzed by dividing it into 8 sections. The time required for the swing motion, the displacement of the center of the human body and the rotation angle of the upper body were calculated through the three-dimensional image analysis based on the DLT(Direct Linear Transformation). Based on the findings of this study, the following conclusion was drawn: The endomorphic golfers showed the longest required golf swing time, followed by the mesomorphic golfer and then the endomorphic golfer. The displacement of left-to-right movement was largest in the mesomorphic golfers, followed by the endomorphic golfers the up-to-down displacement was upward at the time of impact and that the endomorphic and mesomorphic golfers raised the sense of stability by maintaining an almost uniform height at the time of impact. As for the rotational angle of the upper body and the rotational angle of the thigh, the upper body and the thigh took a form of rotating earlier in the ectomorphic golfers at the time of impact, who showed a somewhat different characteristics compared to the endomorphic and mesomorphic golfers. It is necessary to investigate the movement of more fundamental forces in presenting the theory related to the kinematic characteristics of this swing by somatotype. Accordingly, it is thought that it is necessary to analyze the center of pressure(COP) using the ground counterforce in the future study.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the nutrients intakes of hypertensive female farmers in Korea. The number of subjects in this survey was 40(normal 22, hypertensive 18). Body weight, height, circumferences of waist, hip and thigh, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure of them were measured, and lipids and mineral levels of venous blood, mineral contents of 24-hour urine and Na or K levels of some sodium sources were analyzed. The evaluation of nutritional status was performed by recording dietary intake for a day and analyzing it with food composition table. Body weight, waist circumference, waist to thigh ratio, and serum triglyceride were higher in hypertensive. The mean values of calcium, vitamin B2 and niacin intakes of the subjects didn't meet the Korean recommended allowances though there was no significant difference in nutrients intake between two groups. The value of sodium intake presumed from content of sodium excreted to urine, and Na content and Na/K in Korean cabbage Kimchi was higher in hypertensive. These results suggest that reducing of serum triglyceride, decreasing of sodium intake and changing the taste for saltiness can help develop the health status of the rural female hypertensive and control the blood pressure of them.

  • The objective of the study is was investigate the condition of the battle dress uniform worn by male members of the Korean Police Special Weapons Attack Team(KP-SWAT), identify problems, and provide basic raw materials for developing improved design of BDU. For this purpose, the researcher conducted a questionnaire survey on 92 male members of SWAT (Special Weapon Attack Team) units in Seoul using a questionnaire developed through observation and interview. Also, the body sizes of male SWAT members were measured. According to the results of body size measurements, male SWAT members generally require uniforms with a target bust girth, armhole, biceps circumference, thigh and calf circumference, longer jacket length, sleeve length, and trouser length to the knee. According to the results of the questionnaire survey, they reported dissatisfaction with the fit. In addition, they said that the Pockets are positioned too low for convenient use. Many subjects reported that their trousers were too short because of the rubber rings at the bottom of the legs. In addition, many subjects requested the alteration of the inconveniences caused by the designs finished with velcro on the bottom collar of the upper uniform, the marks and ensigns of the upper uniform, the bottom of the upper and lower uniform, and several pockets. Furthermore, there were many complaints concerning how they had to wear their uniform. The most frequently worn out and the body parts most often injured in field training and operations, they were reported, on the upper uniform, as the elbow, collar, neck, armpit, shoulder, and sleeve hem in that order, and on the lower uniform, the knee, interior calf, waist (belt rings), buttocks (rear pockets), and the bottom of the trousers (ankle) in that order As for questions concerning priorities in the improvements of the operational uniform and preferred design, the subjects recommended improvement in safety (protectiveness), workability (motional flexibility), design (shape), fit (size), comfort, ease in terms of putting on and taking off, etc., and the majority preferred two-piece designs ($67.4\%$), followed by one-piece ($30.4\%$), or both ($2.2\%$).

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the outcome of distal femoral osteotomy for distal femoral varus and medial patellar luxation (MPL) grade 4 in small-breed dogs. Radiographs and medical records were reviewed to collect data and plan the surgery in small-breed dogs with MPL grade 4. Computed tomography (CT) imaging was also performed in cases of severe bone deformities. Signalment, weight, medial patellar luxation and lameness grade, radiographic bone union, complications, pre- and postoperative femoral varus angle, passive range of motion, static weight bearing distribution and visual analogue scale scores were recorded. Thirteen corrective distal femoral osteotomies were performed with ancillary and additional procedures in 9 dogs; 4 dogs had staged bilateral procedures; and four stifles were suspected to have partial or complete rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament. One stifle underwent patellar groove replacement. The mean ± SD pre- and postoperative femoral varus angles were 109.15°± 3.71° and 96.30°± 2.97°, respectively. Significant improvements in passive range of motion, thigh circumference and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores were observed. There was no reluxation of the patella. This study suggests that distal femoral osteotomy with traditional and additional procedures provided satisfactory outcomes in patient healing and functional recovery in small-breed dogs with excessive femoral varus angles.
