  • Recently, the production of shipbuilding and offshore plant industries, with a trend toward large structures, has led to an increased use of high strength ultra-thick plates. The use of ultra-thick plates increases the welding tasks, and the welding process generates distortion and residual stress in the weldment because of the rapid heating and cooling. Welding distortion and residual stress in the welded structure resulte in many troubles such as deformation and life deterioration. In particular, the welding residual stress has an important effect on welding deformation, fatigue, buckling strength, brittleness, etc. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the residual stress at a multi-pass weldment using an experimental method for EH36 high-tension steel. In this experimental method, AIS3000 was used to measure the residual stress of a welded part, HAZ, and base metal; EPMA and XRD were used to study the material properties.

  • This paper presents the design and performance of low pull-in voltage MEMS switches for commercial cellular/PCS applications. The switches have all-metal (3 ${\mu}m$ thick Au) movable plates over CPW(Coplanar Waveguide) transmission line. The stress gradient in a movable plate is considered in mechanical design to obtain an accurate pull-in voltage. Series metal-to-metal contact switches are fabricated and evaluated. Those switches exhibit the low loss(<0.2 dB @1.9 GHz) with good isolation(55 dB @1.9 GHz).

  • The main objective of this paper is to study the effect of porosity on the buckling behavior of thick functionally graded sandwich plate resting on various boundary conditions under different in-plane loads. The formulation is made for a newly developed sandwich plate using a functional gradient material based on a modified power law function of symmetric and asymmetric configuration. Four different porosity distribution are considered and varied in accordance with material propriety variation in the thickness direction of the face sheets of sandwich plate, metal foam also is considered in this study on the second model of sandwich which containing metal foam core and FGM face sheets. New quasi-3D high shear deformation theory is used here for this investigate; the present kinematic model introduces only six variables with stretching effect by adopting a new indeterminate integral variable in the displacement field. The stability equations are obtained by Hamilton's principle then solved by generalized solution. The effect of Pasternak and Winkler elastic foundations also including here. the present model validated with those found in the open literature, then the impact of different parameters: porosities index, foam cells distribution, boundary conditions, elastic foundation, power law index, ratio aspect, side-to-thickness ratio and different in-plane axial loads on the variation of the buckling behavior are demonstrated.

  • The demand of LNG tank and the constituting material, i.e., the Al5083 thick plate, increased due to the rapid growth LNG market. To weld the Al5083 thick plate, the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) of high current is necessary to increase manufacturing productivity incurred by the multi pass welding. However, the arc welding vaporizes the volatile element such as magnesium (Mg). This phenomenon changes the Mg composition of the weld metal and the mechanical properties. The study investigated the weldability of Al5083 alloys after conducting high current GMAW. The Al5083 alloy was welded by using different size of welding wires and high current (800-950A). As the arc current increased from 800A to 950A, the mechanical strength decreased and the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) increased. Even though the arc current increased SDAS, the mechanical strength decreased due to the Mg loss in the weldment. The large diameter of welding wire decreased the dilution of the weld, therefore increasing the Mg content and the strength of the weld. For the reason, the content of Mg in welds was a major parameter to determine the mechanical property for the high current GMAW. For the arc current between 800A and 950A, the yield strength of the weldments showed a relationship with the weight percent of Mg content ($X_{Mg}$): Y.S = 27.9($X_{Mg}$)-11.

  • Generally, butt welds with plate thickness $30{\sim}40mm$ are welded with groove angle $40^{\circ},\;60^{\circ},\;70^{\circ}$, etc. In the detection of internal weld defects, oblique testing with single probe has been mainly used. But, recently, in acccordance with enlargement of welded structure, thick plate with 100-200mm are frequently required. Thus I-groove welding method was lately developed and often used. In this case, most frequently generated defects are the lack of weld penetration and incomplete fusion between base metal and welding material. If we would detect by oblique testing with single probe, detecting flaw is occassionally impossible or very underestimated. In this study, the limit for applying tandem method was studied in dise and band type flaws. The estimation of flaw size could be within 10% error compared to real flaws.

  • In this paper, a novel semi-energy finite strip method (FSM) is developed based on the concept of first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) in order to attempt the post-buckling solution for thin and relatively thick functionally graded (FG) plates under uniform end-shortening. In order to study the effects of through-the-thickness shear stresses on the post-buckling behavior of FG plates, two previously developed finite strip methods, i.e., semi-energy FSM based on the concept of classical laminated plate theory (CLPT) and a CLPT full-energy FSM, are also implemented. Moreover, the effects of aspect ratio on initial post-buckling stiffness of FG rectangular plates are studied. It has been shown that the variation of the ratio of initial post-buckling stiffness to pre-buckling stiffness ($S^*/S$) with respect to aspects ratios is quite independent of volume fractions of constituents in thin FG plates. It has also been seen that the universal curve representing the variation of ($S^*/S$) with aspect ratio of a FG plate demonstrate a saw shape curve. Moreover, it is revealed that for the thin FG plates in contrast to relatively thick plates, the variations of non-dimensional load versus end-shortening is independent of ceramic-metal volume fraction index. This means that the post-buckling behavior of thin FG plates and the thin pure isotropic plates is similar. The results are discussed in detail and compared with those obtained from finite element method (FEM) of analysis. The study of the results may have a great influence in design of FG plates encountering post-buckling behavior.

  • This present paper investigated the mechanical properties and the microstructures of each penetration shapes classifying the conduction shape area and the keyhole shape area about electron beam welded 120(T)mm thick plated aluminum 5052 112H. As a result the penetration depth is increased linearly according to the output power, but the aspect ratio is decreased after the regular output power. In the conduction shape area, the Heat affected zone is observed relatively wider than the keyhole shape area. In the material front surface of the welded specimen, the width is decreased but the width in the material rear surface is increased. After the measuring the Micro Vikers Hardness, it showed almost similar hardness range in all parts, and after testing the tensile strength, the ultimate tensile strength is similar to the ultimate tensile strength of the base material in all the specimens, also the fracture point was generated in the base materials of all the samples. In the result of the impact test, impact absorbed energy of the Keyhole shape area is turned up very high, and also shown up the effect about four times of fracture toughness comparing the base material. In the last result of observing the fractographs, typical ductile fraction is shown in each weld metal, and in the basic material, the dimple fraction is shown. The weld metals are shown that there are no other developments of any new chemical compound during the fastness melting and solidification.

  • In this paper, the transient thermal and residual stress analysis of the welding of 9% Ni steel plates using the FEA software ABAQUS are presented. The 9% Ni steel plates are welded manually with welding consumables of 70% Ni based Inconel type super-alloys (YAWATA WELD B (M)), producing a multi-pass/multi-layer butt weld. For these materials, temperature dependant mechanical and thermal material properties are used in the analysis. The back gouging is considered in welding process simulation. The FE thermal results are validated by comparing the real fusion profile and heat affected zone (HAZ). In addition, the continuous indentation test was conducted to measure the strength of base metal, HAZ and weld metal.

  • To resolve the problem of the temperature rise in LED or OLED lighting, until now a thick metal film has been used as a heat-sink. Conventionally, this thick metal film is made by the electroplating method and used as the heat-dissipating plate of the electronic devices. However, nowadays there is increasing need for a Cu metal film with a thickness of several hundred micrometers that can be formed by the dry deposition method. In this work, we designed and fabricated a Cu film deposition system where the heating element is separated from the ceramic crucible, which makes ultra-rapid deposition possible by preventing heat loss. In addition, the resulting induction heating also contributes to the high deposition rate. By tuning the various parameters, we obtained a $100-{\mu}m$ thick Cu film whose heat conductivity is high and whose thickness uniformity is better than 2%, while the deposition rate is as high as $1000{\AA}/s$.
