  • The non-isothermal and isothermal pyrolysis properties of H lignin and P lignin extracted from different biorefinery processes (such as supercritical water hydrolysis and fast pyrolysis) were studied using thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and pyrolyzer-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The lignins were characterized by ultimate/proximate analysis, FT-IR and GPC. Based on the thermogravimetry (TG) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) curves, the thermal decomposition stages were obtained and the pyrolysis products were analyzed at each thermal decomposition stage of non-isothermal pyrolysis. The isothermal pyrolysis of lignins was also carried out at 400, 500, and $600^{\circ}C$ to investigate the pyrolysis product distribution at each temperature. In non-isothermal pyrolysis, P lignin recovered from a fast pyrolysis process started to decompose and produced pyrolysis products at a lower temperature than H lignin recovered from a supercritical water hydrolysis process. In isothermal pyrolysis, guaiacyl and syringyl type were the major pyrolysis products at every temperature, while the amounts of p-hydroxyphenyl type and aromatic hydrocarbons increased with the pyrolysis temperature.

  • The radiation degradation of five insulating materials such as silicone rubber, ethylene-propylene rubber polybutylene terephthalte, poly carbonate, nylon 66 were evaluated by using thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and tensile properties as a function of radiation doses. The results of temperature at 5% weight loss and activation energy from TGA showed linearly decreasing and increasing tendency as radiation doses comparing with tensile properties. Consequently, the assessment of TGA for the radiation degradation of materials was effective.

  • In order to investigate the dehydriding properties of the $Mg_2NiH_x$ formed by hydrogen induced mechanical alloying, we performed isothermal thermogravimetry analysis at 453, 463, 473, 483, 493, 503 and 513K for 1 hours. Dehydrogenation kinetics were dependant strongly on the MA conditions which determine the In other words, kinds of synthesized hydrides phases and the crystal microstructures. The MA condition, 66:1 BCR(balls to chips mass ratio), especially 96h milling time, revealed the hydride phases of nano-/ amorphous state and the dehydriding activation energy of $43.4{\pm}3.6kJ/mole$.

  • Four of non- isothermal methods evaluating kinetics have been studied by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG) and applied for kinetics of the thermal decomposition of cellulose. It is concluded that the heating evolution methods with DSC and approximative methods with TC can lead to satisfactory kinetic analysis. Results calculating the reacting order and the activation energy of cellulose decomposition were 1/2 order and 42kcaB/mol, respectively.

  • This study was to evaluate the feasibility of recycling the solids separated from swine wastewater treatment process as a fuel source for heat production and to provide a data set on the gas emissions and combustion properties. Also, in this study, the heavy metals in ash content were analyzed for its possible use as a fertilizer. Proximate analysis of the solid recovered from the swine wastewater after flocculation with organic polymer showed high calorific (5,330.50 kcal/kg) and low moisture (15.38%) content, indicating that the solid separated from swine wastewater can be used as an alternative fuel source. CO and NOx emissions were found to increase with increasing temperature. Combustion efficiency of the solids was found to be stable (95 to 98%) with varied temperatures. Thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) showed five thermal effects (four exothermic and one endothermic), and these effects were distinguished in three stages, water evaporation, heterogeneous combustion of hydrocarbons and decomposition reaction. Based on the calorific value and combustion stability results, solid separated from swine manure can be used as an alternative source of fuel, however further research is still warranted regarding regulation of CO and NOx emissions. Furthermore, the heavy metal content in ash was below the legal limits required for its usage as fertilizer.

  • Mesophase pitch is an important starting material for making a wide spectrum of industrial and advanced carbon products. It is produced by pyrolysis of petroleum residues. In this work, mesophase formation behavior in petroleum residues was studied to prepare environmentally-benign mesophase pitches, and the composition of petroleum residues and its influence on the mesophase formation was investigated. Two petroleum residues, i.e., clarified oil s (CLO-1, CLO-2) obtained from fluid catalytic cracking units of different Indian petroleum refineries, were taken as feed stocks. A third petroleum residue, aromatic extract (AE), was produced by extraction of one of the CLO-1 by using N-methyl pyrrolidone solvent. These petroleum residues were thermally treated at 380℃ to examine their mesophase formation behavior. Mesophase pitches produced as a result of thermal treatment were characterized physico-chemically, as well as by instrumental techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry/derivative thermogravimetry. Thermal treatment of these petroleum residues led to formation of a liquid-crystalline phase (mesophase). The mesophase formation behavior in the petroleum residues was analyzed by optical microscopy. Mesophase pitch prepared from CLO-2 exhibited the highest mesophase content (53 vol%) as compared to other mesophase pitches prepared from CLO-1 and AE.

  • The characterization of aging of the pyrotechnic device is conducted thermally, chemically, and spectroscopically. The device is comprised of two parts: (i) igniter composed of Zr and (ii) pyrotechnic delay composed of ZrNi alloy. The thermally induced chemical reaction is identified through Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetry Analysis (TGA). The peak deconvolution of the themo-chemical data is used to estimate the enthalpy change of each metallic fuel component. Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) are used for chemical species analysis. The decomposition of oxidants by moisture significantly affected the fuel aging, and the formation of oxide film and metal oxide on the fuel surface gave rise to the thermal energy decrease.

  • In order to investigate the effect of the oxidation process on thermal properties of the pitch, the oxidized pitch was prepared by changing the oxidation temperature. Thermal properties of the pitch were analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and it divided into three sections as A (25~100 ℃), B (250~550 ℃) and C (550~800 ℃) by derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) graph behavior. In the A section, the was reduced because the moisture contained in the pitch was removed. In the B section, as the oxidation temperature increased, the thermal stability of the pitch is improved. Because the degree of aromaticity and molecular weight of the pitch increased with increasing oxidation temperature. In contrast, the results of the C section were shown opposite of B section. Because the introduced C-OH, C-O-C, and C=O bonds were decomposed, and the resulting oxygen compounds induced the combustion reaction of the pitch.
