  • Present study is undertaken to optimize the lubrication reliability and frictional loss of the dynamically-loaded journal bearing in hermetic reciprocating compressor with alternative refrigerant R600a application. Thermodynamic and dynamic analysis has been conducted to investigate cylinder pressure variations by substitution alternative refrigerant R600a for R12. The modeling of the dynamics of the compressor mechanism has been performed with lumped mass method. A mathematical model is developed for analyzing the dynamics of the journal bearing system with the mobility method. It takes into account the effects of the refrigerant species, aspect ratio, clearance ratio and surface roughness. A corresponding computer program is described which enables to obtain the minimum film thickness and frictional loss. Design optimization is graphically performed by parametric studies of the aspect ratio and clearance ratio.

  • Justifications for the use of ${\sigma}$ and Y as independent potential energy variables in the general equation have been reviewed and some mechanistic significances of the relationship discussed. Analysis of the activation parameters for the solvolysis of benzyl chlorides in ethanol-water mixture showed that there are two distinct series of substrate constants ${\alpha}'$, which can be correlated linearly within a series with the substituent constants ${\sigma}$ conforming to the generally accepted concept of change in mechanism from $S_N1$ to $S_N2$.

  • Spectroscopic investigations on the interaction of gabapentin (GBP) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) were reported. The association constant of GBP-BSA system was determined at different temperatures (298, 302, 306 and 311 K) based on the fluorescence quenching results. The GBP was found to quench the fluorescence of BSA through static mechanism. Thermodynamic parameters, the standard enthalpy change, $({\Delta}H^o)$ and the standard entropy change $({\Delta}S^o)$ were observed to be $-9.61{\pm}0.008\;kJ\;mol^{-1}$ and $3.58{\pm}0.011\;Jmol^{-1}K{-1}$ respectively. These indicated that the hydrophobic and electrostatic forces played a role in the interaction of GBP with BSA. The negative value of ${\Delta}G^o$ revealed that the binding reaction is spontaneous. The circular dichroism studies indicated the conformational changes in BSA upon interaction with GBP. The effect of some metal ions on the binding constant was also investigated.

  • The thermodynamic parameters for the solvolysis of the p-chlorobenzyl chloride taking place in the various aqueous mixtures were determined. From the application of these data to the formula ${\delta}_M{\Delta}H^{\neq}=a'Y+b{\delta}_M{\Delta}S^{\neq}$ the following conclusion was obtained: That the substrate constant a' differs in different aqueous solvent was found, and using each a' value the solvolysis mechanism of p-chlorobenzyl chloride in each aqueous mixture can be determined.

  • In some pathogenic bacteria, there are RNA thermometers, which regulate the production of virulence associated factors or heat shock proteins depending on temperature changes. Like a riboswitches, RNA thermometers are located in the 5'-untranslated region and involved translational gene regulatory mechanism. RNA thermometers block the ribosome-binding site and start codon area under the $37^{\circ}C$ within their secondary structure. After bacterial infection, increased the temperature in the host causes conformations changes of RNA, and the ribosome-binding site is exposed for translational initiation. Because structural differences between open and closed forms of RNA thermometers are mainly mediated by base pairing changes, NMR spectroscopy is a very useful method to study these thermodynamically changing RNA structure. In this review, we briefly provide a fundamental function of RNA thermometers, and also suggest a proper NMR experiments for studying RNA thermometers.

  • The interaction between berberine and tannin in aqueous solution was investigated spectrophotometerically. The dyeing mechanism of silk fabrics (control and tannin treated silk fabrics) with berberine was based on thermodynamic parameters obtained from equilibrium adsorption experiments. In adsorption spectra of aqueous solution of berberine and tannin mixture two isosbestic points (328nm, 357nm) were found and the mole fraction of reaction of components was 1:1. Initial dyeing rates were increased and the diffusion of dye was more effective by tannin treatment. Without regard to tannin treatment the adsorption isotherm of berberine was the langmuir type except high temperature, 80℃. By tannin treatment the saturation dye uptake was increased, the increase of dye uptake appeared to be a result of entropy change rather than enthalpy change. All these results can be interpreted by the hydrophobic interaction between berberine and silk treated with tannin and it is reasonable to conclude that not only the ionic force, but also the hydrophobic interaction contributes to the binding of berberine and tannin treated silk treated with tannin.

  • On the basis of the thermally-activated Wear theory, it is well estabilished that the secondary activated energy, which is mainly resulted from the exothermic reaction of hydrogen from thermal decomposition of the hydrocarbons at the high temperature and the high speed, caused catastropic failure. The new additive, viz., DEP was synthesized to reduce or eliminate the hydrogen effect at the contact junction. Through the thermal degrading and the thermodynamic consideration, the synthesized additive, viz., DEP showed the possibiliy as the hydrogen scavenger.

  • Phase mixtures of Titanium boride, nitride, and carbide powder were produced by the reduction of a mixture of titanium and boron oxides with carbon via a gas-solid phase reaction. Boron oxides produce a vapour phase or decompose to a metal sub-oxide gaseous species when reduced at elevated temperature. The mechanism of BO sub-oxide gas formation from $B_2O_3$ and its subsequent reduction to titanium diboride for the production of uniform size hexagonal platelets is explained. These gaseous phases are critical for the formation of boride, nitride and carbide ceramics. For the production of ceramic phase composite microstructures, the nitrogen partial pressure was the most critical factor. Some calculated equilibrium phase fields has been verified experimentally. The theoretical approach therefore identifies conditions for the formation of phase mixtures. The thermodynamic and kinetic factors that govern the phase constituents are also discussed.

  • Corrosion inhibition of 304 stainless steel (SS) in 1 M HCl by aqueous extract of coriander seeds was studied using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM) techniques. Values of inhibition efficiency obtained are dependent upon the concentration of extract and temperature. Generally, inhibition was found to increase with inhibitor concentration, but decrease with temperature. Physical adsorption mechanism has been proposed for the inhibition with Langmuir adsorption isotherm obeyed. Values of activation energy of the inhibited corrosion reaction of 304 SS are greater than the value obtained for the blank. Thermodynamic consideration reveals that adsorption of aqueous extract of coriander seeds 304 SS surface is spontaneous.
