  • In this study, the performance of a thermo siphon type radiator made of copper for LED lighting system was evaluated by using an inverse heat transfer method. Heating experiments and finite element heat transfer analysis were conducted for three different cases. The data obtained from experiments were compared with the analysis results. Based on the data obtained from experiments, the inverse heat transfer method was used in order to evaluate the heat transfer coefficient. First, the heat transfer analysis was conducted for non-vacuum state, without the refrigerant. The evaluated heat transfer coefficient on the radiator surface was 40W/$m^2^{\circ}C$. Second, the heat transfer analysis was conducted for non-vacuum state, with the refrigerant, resulting in the heat transfer coefficient of 95W/$m^2^{\circ}C$. Third, the heat transfer analysis was conducted for vacuum state, with refrigerant. For the third case, the evaluated heat transfer coefficients were 140W/$m^2^{\circ}C$. Third, the heat transfer analysis was conducted for vacuum state, with refrigerant. For the third case, the evaluated heat transfer coefficients were 140W/$m^2^{\circ}C$ for the radiator body, 5W/$m^2^{\circ}C$. Third, the heat transfer analysis was conducted for vacuum state, with refrigerant for the rising position of radiator pipe, 35W/$m^2^{\circ}C$. Third, the heat transfer analysis was conducted for vacuum state, with refrigerant. For the highest position of radiator pipe, and 120W/$m^2^{\circ}C$ for the downturn position of radiator pipe. As a result of inverse heat transfer analysis, it was confirmed that the thermal performance of the current radiator was best in the case of the vacuum state using the refrigerant.

  • A small-scale solar collector and tracking system, using a Fresnel lens of $0.5m^2$, and novel compact fluidized-bed solar receiver[FBR] of closed type has been developed for high temperature solar gas heating. The FBR was improved in carrying over of SiC powder and thermo-siphon effect. The maximum outlet air temperature of 1140K and the maximum thermal efficiency of 64% were obtained. The present FBR's operated efficiently at extremely high temperatures in comparison with conventional solar receivers, composed of flat or tubular solid surfaces.

  • Domestic solar hot water system can be divided into a passive type and an active type. In a passive type the storage tank is horizontally mounted immediately above the solar collectors. No pumping is required as the hot water naturally rises into the storage tank from the collectors through thermo-siphon flow. While, in an active type the storage tank is ground- or floor-mounted and is below the level of the collectors; a circulating pump moves water or heat transfer fluid between the storage tank and the collectors. We installed two types solar hot water systems consisting of the same storage tank and collectors at the same place, and were measured and compared typical operating characteristics under the same external conditions. In particular, the daily system performance was presented through the stirring test after the sunset. The results show that the amount of solar radiation obtained for an active type were less than a passive type on a cloudy day, because the operation of the circulation pump stops frequently took place on that day. However, on a sunny day, depending on the stable operation of the circulation pump, the amount of solar radiation obtained for an active type were increased than a passive type.

  • A two-phase natural circulation test using SMART integral test loop (SMART-ITL) was conducted to explore thermo-hydraulic phenomena of two-phase natural circulation in the SMART reactor. Specifically, the test examined the natural circulation in the primary loop under a stepwise coolant inventory loss while keeping the core power constant at 5% of the scaled full power. Based on the test results, three flow regimes were observed: single-phase natural circulation (SPNC), two-phase natural circulation (TPNC), and boiler-condenser natural circulation (BCNC). The flow rate remained steady in the SPNC, slightly increased in the TPNC, and dropped abruptly and maintained in the BCNC. Using a natural circulation flow map, the natural circulation characteristic in the SMART-ITL was compared with those in pressurized water reactor simulators. In the SMART-ITL, a BCNC regime appeared instead of siphon condensation and reflux condensation regimes because of the use of once-through steam generators.
