Potential of Thermal Stratification and Partial Fuel Stratification for Reducing Pressure Rise Rate in HCCI Engines (HCCI 기관에 있어서의 층상 흡기를 통한 압력 상승률 저감에 대한 단위반응 수치 해석)

  • The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the effects of thermal stratification and partial fuel stratification on reducing the pressure-rise rate and emission in HCCI combustion. The engine is fueled with Di-Methyl Ether(DME) which has unique 2-stage heat release. Computational work is conducted with multi-zones model and detailed chemical reaction scheme. Calculation result shows that wider thermal stratification and partial fuel stratification prolong combustion duration and reduce pressure rise rate. But too wide partial fuel stratification increases CO and NOx concentration in exhaust gas, and decreases combustion efficiency.

Thermal Property Measurement of Swine Atrium

  • Thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity were measured in the atrium of a swine heart. Radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation in an atrium has rapidly emerged at the treatment of symptomatic reentrant arrhythmia associated with accessory pathway or Atrioventricular (AV) node conduction. The thermal properties of an atrium are definitely necessary for these treatments because, in thermal treatments, conductivity and diffusivity are significant factors in the relationship between the applied RF power and the resulting atrium temperature rise. Thermal properties were measured using a self-heated thermistor probe. Thermistor probes were inserted into the tissue of interest and were used to supply heat within the tissue as well as to monitor the temperature rise in the tissue. The measurements were performed at temperatures of 25, 37, $50^{\circ}C$. Atrium thermal conductivity ranged from 5.17$\pm$0.12 mW/cm$^{\circ}C$ at $25^{\circ}C$ to 5.33$\pm$0.08 mW/cm$^{\circ}C$ at $37^{\circ}C$. Atrium thermal diffusivity ranged from 0.00132$\pm$0.00007$cm^2$/sec at $25^{\circ}C$ to 0.00138$\pm$0.00003 $cm^2$/sec at $50^{\circ}C$. This paper also present the thermal property comparison of both chambers of a heart (ventricle and atria).

  • The heat of hydration of cement causes the internal temperature rise at early age, paticular in massive concrete structures. As the results of the temperature rise and restraint condition, the thermal stress may induce cracks in concrete. The prediction of the thermal stress is important in design and construction stages in order to control the cracks in mass concrete. It is poor economy to analysis for prediction of the thermal stress on each design or construction. In this study, the hydration heat and thermal stress analysis is performed by ABAQUS program, as a results of thermal analysis, the formula of size-placing depth relationship is proposed.

  • The life of transformer is significantly dependent on the thermal behavior in windings. To analyse winding temperature rise, many transformer designer have calculated temperature distribution and hot spot point by finite element method(FEM). Recently, numerical analyses of transformer are studied for optimum design, that is electric field analysis, magnetic field, potential vibration, thermal distribution and thermal stress. Therefore design time and design cost are decreased by numerical analysis. In this paper, the temperature distribution and thermal stress analysis of 50kVA pole cast resin transformer for power distribution are investigated by FEM program. The temperature change according to load rates of transformer also have been investigated. We have carried out temperature rise test and test results are compared with simulation data.

  • This paper presents the thermal characteristic analysis of a high-speed horizontal machining center with spindle speed of 50,000rpm and feedrate of 120m/fin. The spindle system is designed based on the built-in motor, angular contact ceramic ball bearings, oil-air lubrication and oil-jacket cooling method. The X-axis and Y-axis feeding systems are composed of the linear motors and linear motion guides, and the Z-axis feeding system is composed of the servo-motor, ball screw and linear motion guides. The thermal characteristics such as the temperature distribution, temperature rise, thermal deformation and step response, are estimated based on the finite element model of machining center and the heat generation rates of heat sources related to the machine operation conditions. Especially, the thermal time constant assessed from the step response function is introduced as an index of thermal response characteristics.

  • The wall in a subway structure is easily subject to crack occurrence since its expansion and shrinkage associated with hydration heat reaction is constrained by the slab. The greater problem is that the crack in the wall may be developed to pass through thickness and eventually deteriorate the structure due to rusting of reinforced steel. Thus, this study aims at controlling thermal cracks as much as possible and determining an optimized size of concrete placement through hydration heat analysis. For this study, effects of placement height, length, temperature and types of cement on the thermal cracks were evaluated by temperature rise, thermal stress and crack index. As results of parametric study, it was found that placement height and length do not have an effect on the temperature rise but have significant one on thermal stress which relates to direct possibility of thermal crack occurrence. This means that proper selection of size balancing internal constraint with external one is much more important than reducing the placement height and length simply. In order to prevent from thermal cracks most effectively, in addition, it was noted to reduce placement temperature and to use the cement blended with mineral admixture.

  • The crack of concrete induced by the heat of hydration is a serious problem, particularly in concrete structures such as underground box structure, mat-slab of nuclear reactor buildings, dams or large footings, foundations of high rise buildings, etc.. As a result of the temperature rise and restriction condition of foundation, the thermal stress which may induce the cracks can occur. Therefore the various techniques of the thermal stress control in massive concrete have been widely used. One of them is prediction of the thermal stress, besides low-heat cement which mitigates the temperature rise, pre-cooling which lowers the initial temperature of fresh concrete with ice flake, pipe cooling which cools the temperature of concrete with flowing water, design change which considers steel bar reinforcement, operation control and so on. The objective of this paper is largely two folded. Firstly we introduce the cracks control technique by employing low-heat cement mix and thermal stress analysis. Secondly it show the application condition of the cracks control technique like sidewall of LNG in Inchonl.

  • The thermal characteristics of high-speed air spindle system with built-in motor are studied. Experiment and finite difference method analysis obtain temperature rise and temperature distribution of housing. For the analysis, air fluid film model is built and temperature rise and distribution in thermal steady state are computed for each rotational speed. Generally, it is said that the heat generation of air bearing is negligible. But the heat generation in air film by heat dissipation can not be negligible especially into high-speed region of the journal. In case that the heat generation of air spindle system is high, natural frequency of the spindle system becomes lower when the thermal state is in steady-state and it means the changes of air bearing stiffness due to the change of bearing clearance. It is shown that the temperature rise of air spindle system causes thermal expansion and induces the variation of bearing clearance. In consequence the stiffness of air bearing becomes smaller.
