  • This paper presents the effects of thermal environment and temperature-dependence of the material properties on axisymmetric bending of functionally graded (FG) circular and annular plates. The material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent and graded in the thickness direction. In order to accurately evaluate the effect of thermal environment, the initial thermal stresses are obtained by solving the thermoelastic equilibrium equations. Governing equations and the related boundary conditions, which include the effects of initial thermal stresses, are derived using the virtual work principle based on the elasticity theory. The differential quadrature method (DQM) as an efficient and robust numerical tool is used to obtain the initial thermal stresses and response of the plate. Comparison studies with some available results for FG plates are performed. The influences of temperature rise, temperature-dependence of material properties, material graded index and different geometrical parameters are carried out.

  • Metal curtain wall systems are widely used in high-rise commercial and residential buildings. While aluminum is the most frequent used frame material, steel framing is also reemerging as a high-performance material in glazed curtain walls due to less thermal conductivity and design flexibility. The purpose of this study is to evaluate thermal performance of a steel frame curtain wall system by comparing with a aluminum frame curtain wall system. The thermal transmittance was measured according to KS 2278, and condensation resistance was calculated by the test results according to KS F 2295. The steel framing test specimen showed lower thermal transmittance and temperature descending factor compared to the aluminum framing test specimen.

  • To analyze complicated phenomena on the fluid hydrodynamic and the elastic deformation between sliding body surfaces, an analysis to the elastohydrodynamic lubrication of sliding contacts has been developed taking into account the thermal and non-Newtonian effects. The computational technique handled the simultaneous solution of the non-Newtonian hydrodynamic effects, elasticity, the load, the viscosity variation, and temperatures rise. The results included the lubricant pressure profile, film thickness, velocity, shear stress, and temperature distribution, and the sliding frictional force on the surface at various slip conditions. These factors showed a great influence on the behavior resulted in the film shape and pressure distribution. Especially, Non-Newtonian effects and temperature rise by the sliding friction force acted as important roles in the lubrication performance.

  • This paper describes the testing and experimental characterization of a linear permanent magnet actuator, which is designed and developed for active vehicle suspension, under both static and dynamic conditions. Since the active suspension unit operates over a wide force-velocity range with varying duty ratios, it is essential to establish an effective thermal model which can be used for assessing temperature rise of the actuator under various operating conditions. The temperature rise of the actuator is measured and the results are compared with the prediction by the derived transient thermal model. It is shown that the measured actuator parameters and characteristics are closed to their predicted values. The linear actuator is controlled by a dSPACE system via a three phase inverter and its velocity tracking performance is presented.

  • In many applications. rubber components undergo dynamic stresses or deformations of fairly large magnitude. Since rubbers are not fully elastic, a part of the mechanical energy is converted into heat due to the hysteresis loss. Heat generation without adequate heat dissipation leads to heat build up. i. e. internal temperature rise. The purpose of this paper is to predict temperature rise caused by the hysteresis loss, in a rubber pad subjected to complex dynamic deformation. In this unsteady thermal analysis, the temperature distributions of track components are displayed in contour shapes and the temperature variations of some important nodes are represented graphically with respect to the running time of the tank.

  • Concrete cracks due to hydration heat are a serious problem, particularly in mass concrete structures such as box rahmen, dam or footing of pier, etc.. As a result of the temperature rise and restriction condition of foundation, the thermal stress which may induce the cracks can occur. In this, study, ABAQUS program package was used to calculate the temperature distributions generated by hydration heat and the thermal stress in box rahmen structure which have thickness of 1.7~2.2m, and applied for various equations of adiabatic temperature rise such as korean code, japanese code, convection coefficient and low heat cement code.

  • The molecules of the substance absorbing a light obtains the radiant energy to the wavelength of the light to make thermal reactions or photochemical reactions. Specially, thermal reactions by infrared radiation brings about physical damage by temperature rise process or temperature drop process of the material. In this study, a measuring system was set up to measure the temperature rise and temperature drop of each sample by infrared radiation from light source. And a physical demage of samples by infrared radiation were measured using the measuring system.

  • A poled lead zirconate titanate (PZT) cube specimen that is switched by an electric field at room temperature is subject to temperature increase. Changes in polarization and thermal expansion coefficients are measured during temperature rise. The measured data are analyzed to obtain changes in pyroelectric coefficient and strain during temperature change. Empirical formulae are developed using linear or quadratic curve fitting to the data. The nonlinear behavior of the materials during temperature increase is predicted using the developed formulae. It is shown that the calculation results can be compared successfully with the measured values, which proves the accuracy and reliability of the developed formulae for the nonlinear behavior of the materials during temperature changes.

  • Transient thermal analysis simulations are carried out using a modeling program to understand the human body model HBM ESD. The devices were simulated a one-dimensional device subjected to ESD stress by solving Poison's equation, the continuity equation, and heat flow equation. A ramp rise with peak ESD voltage during rise time is applied to the device under test and then discharged exponentially through the device. LDD and NMOS structures were studied to evaluate ESD performance, snap back voltages, device heating. Junction heating results in the necessity for increased electron concentration in the space charge region to carry the current by the ESD HBM circuit. The doping profile adihacent to junction determines the amount of charge density and magnitude of the electric field, potential drop, and device heating. Shallow slopes of LDD tend to collect the negative charge and higher potential drops and device heating.
