  • Thermal expanded core (TEC) fiber can reduce, being advantaged from thermal diffusion technology, connection loss by expanding the tolerance in relation to axial offset and gap when making optical connection having mode field diameter (MFD) of optical fiber expanded locally. In this paper, TEC fiber fabrication system based on the frame brushing techniques using twin-torch tip was designed and developed in order to maintain a stable thermal diffusion and single-mode when manufacturing TEC fiber. We were able to obtain that varied kinds of TEC fibers of which MFD could have been extended between $20\;{\mu}m$ and $40\;{\mu}m$ by TEC fiber fabrication system. In addition, the characteristic of connection loss was measured by alignment two TEC fibers of which MFD was $30\;{\mu}m$.

  • The use of thermally expanded core (TEe) fibers fabricated by thermal diffusion of dopants such as $GeO_{2}$ in hybrid fiber components has an advantage of eliminating lenses for collimation and focusing. An electric furnace is fabricated to heat the fibers locally for the core expansion. We observed an expansion of the mode size at $1.3\mu\textrm{m}$ wavelength by 27% after treating a section of single mode optical fiber at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours. hours.

  • Vacuum Insulation Panel(VIP) has the lowest thermal conductivity among present insulations. It is composed of envelope, core material and getter. Aluminum film is usually used as the envelope of VIP, and it is important component to decide the useful life of VIP. In this research, the thermophysical properties of incombustible fiber glass core VIP were investigated with the possibility of its architectural applications. The results of this research can be summarized as follows: 1) The thermal conductivity of 20mm-thick fiber glass core VIP is resulted as 0.00177W/m·K, which means that 20mm-thick VIP can meet all the reinforced insulation guideline and it can be used in any envelope of any region in Korea. 2) As a result of the test of incombustion and gas toxicity, fiber glass core VIP was suitable for incombustible material. 3) As the test result for the long term thermal conductivity, fiber glass core VIP was found out that it would keep above 10 times insulating performance than polystyrene foam and glass fiber. 4) To meet the thermal transmittance of 0.12W/㎡K, limited-combustible insulation of expanded polystyrene foam and phenolic foam should be used respectively as thick as above 280mm and 170mm, incombustible VIP can meet the same insulation level with 20mm thickness. 5) The price competitiveness of incombustible VIP to meet the thermal transmittance of 0.12W/㎡·K was about 1,500won/㎡ higher than that of phenolic foam.

  • In this paper, we have presented techniques to reduce the splicing loss between standard single mode fiber and high ${\Delta}$ single mode fiber based on the mode expanding and mode evolution induced by thermal treatment of the fibers. The experimental results show that mechanical splicing loss can be reduced from 2.3 dB to 0.1 dB through proper thermal treatment of the high ${\Delta}$ fiber. Meanwhile, we achieved $0.2{\sim}0.4dB$ of low splicing loss between two fibers by heating the splicing region using electric arcing or an oxygen flame.

  • Optical add/drop multiplexers (OADMs), one of the new network elements, will play a key role enabling greater connectivity and flexibility in the dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) networks. The importance of OADMs is that they allow the optical network to be local transmitting/extraction on a wavelength-by-wavelength basis to optimize traffic, efficient network utilization, network growth, and to enhance network flexibility. Also, the automatic assembly system of micro optical filters and fibers is a key technology in the development of optical modules with high functionality. Recently, one of remarkable tends in the development of optical communication industry is the miniaturization and integration of products. In this research, we have developed a system capable of automatic alignment of a film filter and a lensed fiber in order to improve the speed and losses in the optical fiber to filter alignment of optical modules. Using the developed automatic alignment system and silicon optical benches, we have fabricated the micro OADM and measured the insertion loss and aging effect.
