In this study, the resistance spot welding process of an aluminum alloy was analyzed through the numerical simulation including the electric contact resistance and the heat generation in the electrode. The finite element model was used to solve the electro-thermal responses in weld cycles. The resistance of the contact area was represented as the contact element modeling, but the thermal resistance between the contact surfaces was neglected. Welding tests of Alclad 2024-T3 aluminum alloy were made not only to get the input data for the numerical simulation, but also to compare the numerical results. The contact resistance was determined initially by the contact resistance tests and assumed to decay exponentially up to the solidus temperature. The temperature distributions and dynamic resistance obtained numerically were in good agreement with the experimental results. Numerical results revealed that nugget growth depends mainly on the heat generated in the workpiece and its contact area. The heat generated in the electrode has, however, only a little effect on the nugget growth, and the heat generation in the electrode-workpiece interface is initially high but decrease repidly.
This study investigates changes in the mechanical behavior, such as changes in indentation load-displacement curve, wear resistance and contact fatigue resistance of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) by thermal cycling test and thermal shock test. Relatively dense and porous TBCs on nickel-based bondcoat/superalloy are prepared; the highest temperature applied during thermal durability test is $1350^{\circ}C$. The results indicate that the porous TBCs have relatively longer lifetime during thermal cycling and thermal shock tests, while denser TBCs have relatively higher wear and contact fatigue resistance. The mechanical behavior is influenced by sintering of the TBCs by exposure to high temperature during tests.

In this paper, we propose thermal resistance compact model of FinFET structure that has hexagon shaped source/drain. The heating effect and thermal properties were increased by reduced size of the device, and thermal resistance is an important factor to analyze the effect and the properties. The heat source and each contact that is moved heat out were set up in transistor, and domain is divided by the heat source and the four parts of contacts : source, drain, gate, substrate. Each contact thermal resistance model is subdivided as a easily interpretable structure by analyzing the temperature and heat flow of the TCAD simulation results. The domains are modeled based on an integration or conformal mapping method through the structure parameters according to its structure. First modeled by analyzing the thermal resistance to a single fin, and applying the change in the parameter of the channel increases to improve the accuracy of the thermal resistance model of the multi-fin/ finger. The proposed thermal resistance model was compared to the thermal resistance by analyzing results of the 3D Technology CAD simulations, and the proposed total thermal resistance model has an error of 3 % less in single and multi-finl. The proposed thermal resistance model can predict the thermal resistance due to the increase of the fin / finger, and the circuit characteristics can be improved by calculating the self-heating effect and thermal characterization.
This paper deals with the distributions of the contact stress in oil seals. The distributions of the contact stress due to the temperature effects are analyzed for various values of the interference for a nitrile rubber seal. The calculated FEM results show that the relative maximum stresses occur at the contacting area against the shaft, the flex zone, and the contacting area of the garter spring grooves. Using the coupled temperature-stress FEM a nalysis, the contact force of a radial lip seal with and without the garter spring are studied as a function of shaft diameter. The calculated results of mechanical analysis show good correspondence with those of the coupled thermal-mechanical analysis method except small values of the interference. And the calculated results indicated that the thermal stresses only have a very minor influence on the deformed shape of the lip seal as the interference increases. But the coupled temperature-stress analysis will be very useful tool to predict the contact behaviors of rubber lip seals for small values of the interference.
When a small gear rotates at a very high speed over 40,000 rpm, frictional heat is generated on the gear surfaces. Thermal deformations and stresses arising from frictional heat may lower the efficiency and fatigue life of the high-speed gear. Especially, such frictional heat has much stronger effects on the performance of millimeter-sized high-speed gears used for surgical and dental hand-pieces, due to a small surface area. An analytical equation was derived to calculate frictional temperature on a mating gear surface and conduction heat transfer analysis was performed. Thermal deformation and contact stresses were then calculated using FEM for gears used for medical hand-pieces. The contact stresses of the meshed gear and pinion increase by 19.4% and 16.4%, respectively, when the frictional thermal deformations are considered.
The effect of coating thickness on the contact fatigue and wear of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are investigated in this study. The same bondcoat material thickness (250 ㎛) are used for each sample, which allows the effect of the coating thickness of the topcoat to be investigated. TBCs with different coating thicknesses (200, 400, and 600 ㎛) are prepared by changing processing parameters such as the feeding rate of the feedstock, spraying speed, and spraying distance during APS(air plasma spray) coating. The damage size on the surface are strongly affected by the coating thickness effect. Although the damage size from contact fatigue using a spherical indenter diminish at a TBC of 200 ㎛, a high wear resistance such as a low friction coefficient and little mass change are found at a TBC of 600 ㎛. These results indicate that the coating thickness strongly affects the mechanical behavior in TBCs during gas turbine operation.

Extra-high voltage(EHV) disconnecting switch(DS) consists of the electrical contacts and mechanical parts which actuate the contacts. When the short-circuit condition occurs, a large amount of current flows through the electrical contact in disconnecting switches and this causes considerable temperature rise due to Joule heating. If the temperature rise is higher than the melting point of contact material, the DS contact becomes melting and cannot be usable anymore. For this reason, the analysis for capability of carrying short-circuit current in DS contacts must be performed at a design stage. Here, we proposed a numerical technique for evaluating the capability of carrying short-circuit current at electrical contacts in EHV DS. In this numerical approach, the mechanical and thermal analyses were simulated to check the capability of carrying short-circuit current. First, the applied pressure at contact parts was analyzed considering the mechanical properties, and then contact resistance was calculated by an empirical equation. Finally, thermal analysis was performed with resistance variation at electrical contacts. To verify these numerical results, the distributions of temperature in DS were experimentally measured and compared with each other. The results from experiments were agreed well with those from the proposed numerical simulations.

In order to improve the efficiency of a direct contact heat exchanger for a solar thermal energy system, the working fluid should be dispersed into small and uniform droplets, and stay within a heat exchanger for a long time. Therefore, installation of meshes in a direct contact heat exchanger is suggested in the present study, and the performance of the direct contact heat exchanger with several layers of meshes is experimentally investigated. Diethyl phthalate is used as the working fluid, and the performance of the heat exchanger is tested for several different operating conditions and compared to that of the heat exchanger without meshes. The results of this investigation show that meshes make droplets uniform and small when the flow rate is low. The relationship between the Peclet number and the Nusselt number becomes linear if it is steady. And, the Nusselt number for the direct contact heat exchanger with meshes becomes greater than that without meshes as the Peclet number increases.

This paper was carried about thermal analysis for high efficiency point contact solar cell. Therefore, we carried about 2-D device and process simulator according to design and process parameters. As a result of simulations, power transfer efficiency have decreased more increasing temperature. Especially, power transfer efficiency of room temperature have been showed 25%. The other hand, power transfer efficiency of 350 K kalvin temperature have been showed 20%. Therefore, we will considered design with thermal dissipation of device.

For the design of a liquid direct contact cooling system, thermal and hydraulic analysis has been carried out. Well-known Zukauskas correlations are used to estimate the Nusselt number between the liquid refrigerant columns and the inlet airflow. The inlet air velocity is set at a typical value used in an actual showcase. For a constant column number, the best nozzle arrangement is determined for the maximum heat transfer. Heat transfer increases as the transverse pitch of the refrigerant column decreases. Among all the cases dealt with in the present study, the staggered arrangement with 140-columns of $14{\times}10$ shows the best thermal peformance and the expected temperature drop is $27.8^{\circ}C$. The effect of downstream refrigerant columns on the overall thermal performance is investigated as well.
