  • A numerical study is conducted on the optical fiber coating flow in a primary coating nozzle consisting of three major parts: a resin chamber, a contraction and a coating die of small diameter. The flow is driven by the optical fiber penetrating the center of the nozzle at a high speed. The axisymmetric two-dimensional flow and heat transfer induced by viscous heating are examined based on the laminar flow assumption. Numerical experiments are performed with varying the convergent angle of nozzle contraction and the optical fiber drawing speed. The numerical results show that for high drawing speed greater than 30 m/s, there is a transition in the essential flow features depending on the convergent angle. For a large convergent angle greater than $30^{\circ}$, unfavorable multicellular flow structures are monitored, which could be associated with wall boundary-layer separation. In the regime of small convergent angle, as the angle increases, the highest resin temperature at the exit of die and the coating thickness decrease but the sensitivity of coating thickness on drawing speed and the maximum shear strain of resin on the optical fiber increase. The effects of the convergent angle are discussed in view of compromise searching for an appropriate angle for high-speed optical fiber coating.

  • The flow characteristics and heat transfer augment on the periodically arranged semi-circular ribs in a rectangular channel for turbulent flow has been investigated numerically. The aspect ratio of the rectangular channel was AR=5, the rib height to hydraulic diameter ratio were 0.07 and rib height to channel height ratio was set as e/H=0.117 for various PR(rib pitch-to-rib height rate) between 8~14, respectively. The SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model and v2-f turbulence model were used to find out the heat transfer and the flow characteristics of near the wall which are suited to obtain realistic phenomena. The numerical analysis results show turbulent flow characteristics, heat transfer enhancement and friction factor as observed experimentally. The results predict that turbulent kinetic energy(k) is closely relative to the diffusion of recirculation flow. and v2-f turbulence model simulation results have a good agreement with experimental values.

  • The weighted sum of gray gas model(WSGGM) is applied to arbitrary mixtures of CO$_2$ and H$_2$0 gases. To evaluate this model, the spectral and total intensities are obtained for two different problem types. One has uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temperature profiles with uniform partial pressure, and the other has nonuniform partial pressure and temperature profile. The results obtained from the two different problem types show fairly good agreements with the results obtained by the statistical narrow band model(SNB model) which is regarded as the reference solutions. The WSGGM and its data base provided by this study can be used for analysis of radiative transfer by combustion gases with different thermal loadings and chemical compositions.

  • Experiments on flame spread in an one-dimensional droplet array up to supercritical pressures of fuel droplet have been conducted In normal gravity and microgravity. Evaporating process around unburnt droplet is observed through high-speed Schlieren and direct visualizations in detail, and flame spread rate is measured using high speed chemiluminescence images of OH radical. Flame spread behaviors are categorized into three: flame spread is continuous at low pressures and is regularly intermittent up to the critical pressure of fuel. flame spread is irregularly intermittent and zig-zag at supercritical pressures of fuel. At atmospheric pressure, the limit droplet spacing and the droplet spacing of maximum flame spread rate in microgravity are larger than those in normal gravity. In microgravity, the flame spread rate with the increase of ambient pressure decreases initially, takes a minimum, and then decreases after taking maximum. This is so because the flame spread time is determined by competing effects between the increased transfer time of thermal boundary layer due to reduced flame diameter and the reduced ignition delay time in terms of the increase of ambient pressure. Consequently, it is found that flame spread behaviors in microgravity are considerably different from those in normal gravity due to the absence of natural convection.

  • While effects of the atmospheric boundary layer flow on engineering infrastructure are more or less known, some local transient winds create difficulties for structures, traffic and human activities. Hence, further research is required to fully elucidate flow characteristics of some of those very unique local winds. In this study, important characteristics of observed vertical velocity profiles along the main wind direction for the gusty Bora wind blowing along the eastern Adriatic coast are presented. Commonly used empirical power-law and the logarithmic-law profiles are compared against unique 3-level high-frequency Bora measurements. The experimental data agree well with the power-law and logarithmic-law approximations. An interesting feature observed is a decrease in the power-law exponent and aerodynamic surface roughness length, and an increase in friction velocity with increasing Bora wind velocity. This indicates an urban-like velocity profile for smaller wind velocities and rural-like velocity profile for larger wind velocities, which is due to a stronger increase in absolute velocity at each of the heights observed as compared to the respective velocity gradient (difference in average velocity among two different heights). The trends observed are similar during both the day and night. The thermal stratification is near neutral due to a strong mechanical mixing. The differences in aerodynamic surface roughness length are negligible for different time averaging periods when using the median. For the friction velocity, the arithmetic mean proved to be independent of the time record length, while for the power-law exponent both the arithmetic mean and the median are not influenced by the time averaging period. Another issue is a large difference in aerodynamic surface roughness length when calculating using the arithmetic mean and the median. This indicates that the more robust median is a more suitable parameter to determine the aerodynamic surface roughness length than the arithmetic mean value. Variations in velocity profiles at the same site during different wind periods are interesting because, in the engineering community, it has been commonly accepted that the aerodynamic characteristics at a particular site remain the same during various wind regimes.

  • As the dimension of Cu interconnects has continued to reduce, its resistivity is expected to increase at the nanoscale due to increased surface and grain boundary scattering of electrons. To suppress increase of the resistivity in nanoscale interconnects, alloying Cu with other metal elements such as Al, Mn, and Ag is being considered to increase the mean free path of the drifting electrons. The formation of Al alloy with a slight amount of Cu broadly studied in the past. The study of Cu alloy including a very small Al fraction, by contrast, recently began. The formation of Cu-Al alloy is limited in wet chemical bath and was mainly conducted for fundamental studies by sputtering or evaporation system. However, these deposition methods have a limitation in production environment due to poor step coverage in nanoscale Cu metallization. In this work, gap-filling of Cu-Al alloy was conducted by cyclic MOCVD (metal organic chemical vapor deposition), followed by thermal annealing for alloying, which prevented an unwanted chemical reaction between Cu and Al precursors. To achieve filling the Cu-Al alloy into sub-100nm trench without overhang and void formation, furthermore, hydrogen plasma pretreatment of the trench pattern with Ru barrier layer was conducted in order to suppress of Cu nucleation and growth near the entrance area of the nano-scale trench by minimizing adsorption of metal precursors. As a result, superconformal gap-fill of Cu-Al alloy could be achieved successfully in the high aspect ration nanoscale trenches. Examined morphology, microstructure, chemical composition, and electrical properties of superfilled Cu-Al alloy will be discussed in detail.

  • Thermoacoustic oscillation of an air column induced by heated wires is investigated analytically and experimentally. Acoustic power generation from a single heater wire is estimated based on the result of heat transfer analysis and expressed in terms of the efficiency factor indicating the conversion efficiency from heat to acoustic energy. It is shown that the efficiency factor becomes maximum when the wire radius is the order of the coustic boundary layer thickness and the flow velocity is close to the thermal diffusion velocity. Onset condition of the column oscillation is obtained by equating the acoustic power generation at the heater to the power loss due to thermoviscous dissipation at the tube wall and the convection and radiationloss at the open ends of the tube. In estimating the acoustic power generation, the heater is treated as a stretched single wire by correcting the flow velocity to take into account the interactions between adjacent heater wires. Experiment is performed by using a spiral heater of 1mm diameter in an air column of 37mm diameter. The heat input to drive the oscillation is measured and compared with the theoretical prediction. A good agreement is found between the theory and experiment, which is regarded as a substantial verification of the present analysis.

  • The main outcomes of the experiments H2P6 performed in the thermal-hydraulics large-scale PANDA facility at PSI in the frame of the OECD/NEA HYMERES-2 project are presented in this article. The experiments of the H2P6 series consists of two PANDA tests characterized by the activation of three (H2P6_1) or one (H2P6_2) cooler(s) in an initially stratified and pressurized containment atmosphere. The initial stratification is defined by a helium-rich region located in the upper part of the vessel and a steam/air atmosphere in the lower part. The activation of the cooler(s) results i) in the condensation of the steam in the vicinity of the cooler(s), ii) the corresponding activation of large scale natural circulation currents in the vessel atmosphere, with the result of iii) the re-distribution and mixing of the Helium stratification initially located in the upper half of the vessel and iv) the continuous pressure decay. The initial helium layer represents hydrogen generated in a postulated severe accident. The main question to be answered by the experiments is whether or not the interaction of the different, localized cooler units would be important for the application of numerical methods. The paper describes the initial and boundary conditions and the experimental results of the H2P6 series with the suggestion of simple scaling laws for both experiments in terms of i) the temperature difference(s) across the cooler(s), ii) the transient steam and helium content and iii) the pressure decay in the vessel. The outcomes of this scaling indicate that the interaction between separate, closely localized units does not play a prominent role for the present experiments. It is therefore reasonable to model several units as one large component with equivalent heat transfer area and total water flow rate.

  • CoSiB is the amorphous ferromagnetic material and multilayer consisting of CoSiB and Pd has perpendicular magnetic anisotropic property. PMA has strong advantages for STT-MRAM. Moreover, amorphous materials have two advantages more than crystalline materials: no grain boundary and good thermal stability. Therefore, we studied the magnetic properties of multilayers consisting of the $Co_{75}Si_{15}B_{10}$ with PMA. In this study, we investigated the magnetic property of the [CoSiB (3, 4, 5, and 6) ${\AA}$/Pd(11, 13, 15, 17, 19,and $24{\AA})]_5$ multilayers and found the annealing temperature dependence of the magnetic property. The annealing temperature range is from room temperature to $500^{\circ}C$. The coercivity and the saturation magnetization of the CoSiB/Pd multilayer system have a close association with the annealing temperature. Moreover, the coercivity especially shows a sudden increasing at the specific annealing temperature.

  • In numbers of kinds of heat exchanger, the shell-tube heat exchanger is the most commonly used type of heat exchanger in the industry field. In order to improve the thermal performance of the heat exchanger, this study was analyzed heat transfer characteristics according to arrangement of baffle and direction of baffle and bump phase of baffle about shell-tube heat exchanger using appropriate SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model for flow separation and boundary layer analysis. As the boundary condition for CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis, the inlet temperature of shell side was constantly 344 K and the variation of the water flow rate was 6, 12, 18 and 24 l/min. As the result of analysis, zigzag baffle arrangement enhances heat transfer rate and pressure drop. Furthermore, in the direction of the baffle, heat transfer rate is more improved with vertical type and angle $45^{\circ}$ type than existing type, and pressure drop was little difference. Also, the bump shape of baffle surface contributes to heat transfer rate and pressure drop improvement due to the increased heat transfer area. Through analysis results, we knew that the increase of the heat transfer was influenced by flow separation, fluid residual time, contact area with the tube, flow rate, swirl and so on.
