Numerical Analysis on the Thermal Characteristics of a Ventilated Disc Brake (벤틸레이티드 디스크 브레이크의 열적특성에 관한 수치해석)

  • The adequate design of a passenger car's braking system, which is directly related to the safety of a car, is very important since the safety is an essential design parameter of a car to keep men and car from the damage. The general method to verify the performance and safety of a braking system is still based on the trial-error experiments. However, the design based on experiments costs high and is time-consuming method. So it is desirable to use the numerical analysis method for the reduction of cost and time in the design of a braking system. In this paper, the thermal characteristic of a ventilated disc brake has been analyzed as a function of the car speed and a deceleration during quick braking.

  • An empirical functional form was suggested for the analysis of the emission spectrum of high-power light-emitting diode (LED) consisting of a sharp blue peak from the LED chips and a broad yellow peak from the phosphor layer. The peak positions, half widths, shape parameters, and amplitudes of these two peaks were reliably obtained as a function of the temperature, and the results were discussed qualitatively in relation with the junction temperature. The adoption of an inert liquid was found to have significantly reduced the LED temperature and the color shift of the emitted light. The phenomenological approach used in this study may be helpful in the simulation of the LED spectrum under various thermal conditions, and may thus be helpful in the improvement of the device performance.

  • Single flighted screw injection technology is the most cost effective method for the production of film, sheet, pipe and the fundamental step in other processes including blow molding and injection molding. The temperature of polymer melts and injection pressure play a very important role in the injection molding machine. Thermal distortion and displacement of a screw by temperature difference and injection pressure difference ratio cause a friction and thermoelastic wear by metal-to-metal contact between the screw and the cylinder. In this paper we analyzed thermal distortions of a screw as functions of temperature distribution and pressure profiles by finite element analysis.

  • Thermally induced vibration response of composite thin walled beams is investigated. The thin-walled beam model incorporates a number of nonclassical effects of transverse shear, primary and secondary warping, rotary inertia and anisotropy of constituent materials. Thermally induced vibration response characteristics of a composite thin walled beam exhibiting the circumferentially uniform system(CUS) configuration are exploited in connection with the structural bending-torsion coupling resulting from directional properties of fiber reinforced composite materials and from ply stacking sequence. A coupled thermal structure analysis that includes the effects of structural deformations on heating and temperature gradient is investigated.

  • Vibration analysis of rotating blade is the main purpose of present study. In this work, general formulation is proposed to analyze rotating shell type structures including the centrifugal force, Coriolis acceleration and initial twist. Futhermore, simplified equations are derived for the case of an open circular cylindrical shell. Based on the concept of degenerated shell element with the Reissner-Mindlin's assumptions, the finite element method is adopted for solving the governing equations. (onitted)

  • Mechanical and thermal analysis properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composite for train carbody were evaluated by varying with environmental factors such as ultraviolet, temperature, and moisture. Accelerated environmental aging tester was utilized for this study. Testing temperature was set to $80^{\circ}C$ and ultraviolet was obtained through xenon-arc lamp. To consider moisture, water sprayed on specimen for 18 minutes every 2 hour. All the specimens were made of CF1263/Epoxy composite. Mechanical properties such as tensile, bending, and shear properties were evaluated through a material testing system. Also, thermal analysis properties such as storage shear modulus, loss shear modulus, and tan ${\delta}$ were measured through dynamic mechanical analyzer. Finally surfaces of the composite exposed to environmental factors were examined using a scanning electron microscope. From experimental results, those properties of CF1263/Epoxy composite were shown to be slightly decreased due to environmental factors.

  • Vortex and swirl occurring in a pump suction intake sump normally reduce the performance and disturb the safe operation of the circulation water pump in thermal power plants. This paper presents a case study of one particular intake sump design via a CFD analysis and a hydraulic model testing. The physical experiments and numerical analysis were performed under two flow and three level variation conditions. The vortex patterns around the pump suction pipe have been predicted by a commercial CFD code with the k-${\varepsilon}$ model. The model tests were conducted on a 1/10 model for a practical intake sump. The location, number and general pattern of the free surface vortex and submerged vortex predicted by CFD simulation were found to be a good agreement with those observed in the model testing.

  • In this study, the thermal behavior and combustion characteristics of different ranks of coals and their blends were investigated to obtain information necessary for the evaluation of the co-processing of blends with low-rank coals. Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and differential thermal analysis(DTA) were carried out at different temperature from ambient temperature to $800^{\circ}C$, and a laboratory-scale pulverized coal combustion burner was used with coal feeing rate of $1.04{\times}10^{-4}kg/s$.

  • A method to simulate the gas turbine transient behavior is developed. The basic principles of the method and main input data required are described. Calculation results are presented in terms of whole operating regime of the engine. The influence of initial parameters such as starting engine power, moment of inertia of the rotor, fuel schedule on performance characteristics of gas turbine during transient operation is shown. In addition, the effect of bleeding air on transient behavior is also considered. For validation of the developed computer code, a comparative analysis with experimental data obtained from a heavy duty gas turbine is made. Calculation results agree well with the experimental data for the range of operating regime studied and proved applicability of the developed technique to initial design stage of control system.

  • Thermal energy control is a important factor to control properties of large sized product in ingot-forging. Good control of thermal energy helps to increase characteristics and eliminate defects of large cast-forged part, such as large sized forged shell. We have studied about not only large size ring forging process and after heat treatment process by FEM simulation. Changes of temperature and microstructure for forged shell were predicted according to different heat treatment conditions. Therefore, we can choose the proper heat treatment condition by FEA. The sectional properties confirmed by practical experiment and evaluation have presented possibilities of process design by computational analysis.
