  • Induction heating is a process that is accompanied with magnetic and thermal situation. When the high-frequency current flows in the coil, induced eddy current generates heat to conductor. To simulate an induction and induction heating process, the finite element analysis program was developed. A coupling method between the magnetic and thermal routines was developed. In the process of magnetic analysis and thermal analysis, magnetic material properties and thermal material properties depending on temperature are taken into consideration. In this paper, to predict the angular deformation, temperature difference and the shape of heat affected zone were discussed. Also appropriate coil shape and other process variables for maximum angular deformation were proposed.

  • The supersonic flutter analysis of cylindrical composite panels subject to thermal stresses has been performed using layerwise nonlinear finite elements. The geometric nonlinear finite elements of cylindrical shells are formulated using hamilton's principle with von Karman strain-displacement relationship. Hans Krumhaar's modified supersonic piston theory is appled to calculate aerodynamic loads for the panel flutter analysis. The present results show that the critical dynamic pressure of cylindrical panels under compressive thermal stresses can be dramatically reduced. The margin of aerothermoelastic stability considering thermal and aerodynamic coupling should be verified in the structural design of launch vehicles and high speed aircrafts.

  • Temperature control of an enclosed thermal system which has many applications including Rapid Thermal Processing (RTP) of semiconductor wafers showed an input-constraint violation for nonlinear controllers due to inherent strong coupling between the elements [1]. In this paper, a constrained nonlinear optimal control design is developed, which accommodates input constraints using the linear algebraic equivalence of the nonlinear controllers, for the temperature control of an enclosed thermal process. First, it will be shown that design of nonlinear controllers is equivalent to solving a set of linear algebraic equations-the linear algebraic equivalence of nonlinear controllers (LAENC). Then an input-constrained nonlinear optimal controller is designed based on that LAENC using the constrained linear least squares method. Through numerical simulations, it is demonstrated that the proposed controller achieves the equivalent performances to the classical nonlinear controllers with less total energy consumption. Moreover, it generates the practical control solution, in other words, control solutions do not violate the input-constraints.

  • Thermal buckling of nonlocal flexoelectric nanoplates incorporating surface effects is analyzed for the first time. Coupling of strain gradients and electrical polarizations is introduced by flexoelectricity. It is assumed that flexoelectric nanoplate is subjected to uniform and linear temperature distributions. Long range interaction between atoms of nanoplate is modeled via nonlocal elasticity theory. The residual surface stresses which are usually neglected in modeling of flexoelectric nanoplates are incorporated into nonlocal elasticity to provide better understanding of the physic of problem. A Galerkin-based approach is implemented to solve the governing equations derived from Hamilton's principle are solved. The verification of obtained results is performed by comparing buckling loads of flexoelectric nanoplate with previous data. It is shown that buckling loads of flexoelectric nanoplate are significantly affected by thermal loading type, temperature change, nonlocal parameter, surface effect, plate thickness and boundary conditions.

  • A coupled-mode approach is used to analyze the interaction of the carrier wave in solid-state materials with the external slow electromagnetic wave. A general condition for an active coupling is derived. Gain characteristics is also examined as a function of operating frequency and thermal-to-drift veocity variations.

  • The engine-out flow is highly transient and hot, and may place tremendous thermal and inertial loads on a closed-coupled catalyst. Therefore, time-dependent and detailed flow and thermal field simulation may be crucial. The aim of this study is to develop combined chemical reaction and multi-dimensional fluid dynamic mathematical model and to study the effect of unsteady pulsating thermal and flow characteristics on thermal reliability of closed-coupled catalyst. The effect of cell density on the conversion performance under real running condition is also investigated. Unlike previous studies, the present study focuses on coupling between the problems of pulsating flow pattern and catalyst thermal response and conversion efficiency. The results are expressed in terms of temporal evolution of flow, pollutant and temperature distribution as well as transient characteristics of conversion efficiency. Fundamental understanding of the flow and thermal phenomena of closed-coupled catalyst under real running condition is presented. It is shown that instants of significantly low values of flow uniformity and conversion efficiency exist during exhaust blowdown and the temporal varaition of flow uniformity is very similar in pattern to one of conversion efficiency. It is also found that the location of hot spot in monolith is directly affected by transient flow pattern in closed-coupled catalyst.
