Nanofluids have anomalously high thermal conductivities at very low fraction, strongly temperature-dependent and size-dependent conductivities, and three-fold higher critical heat flux than that of base fluids. Traditional conductivity theories such as the Maxwell or other macroscale approaches cannot explain why nanofluids have these intriguing features. So in this paper, we devise a theoretical model that accounts for the fundamental role of dynamic nanoparticles in nanofluids. The proposed model not only captures the concentration and temperature-dependent conductivity, but also predicts strongly size-dependent conductivity. Furthermore, we physically explain the new phenomena for nanofluids. In addition, based on a proposed model, the effects of various parameters such as the ratio of thermal conductivity of nanofluids to that of a base fluid, volume fraction, nanoparticle size, and temperature on the thermal conductivities of nanofluids are investigated.

In this study, the thermal conductivity, physical and mechanical properties of lightweight aggregate concretes with hollow micro sphere(HMS) are experimentally examined as a basic research for the development of structural insulation concrete. As the results of this experiment, in the case of concrete mixed with HMS, the value of slump has been reduced, so it is found that the dosage of superplasticizer should be increased. As the replacement ratio of HMS increases, it has shown that the compressive strength is somewhat decreased due to the low interfacial adhesion strength of HMS. But the thermal conductivity is found to be greatly improved with the replacement ratio of HMS increases, the thermal conductivity of HMS shows the lower value of 68% at lightweight aggregate concrete and 32% of normal concrete. Also it is found that the compressive strength is decreased and thermal conductivity is increased as the water-cement ratio increases. The most outstanding for insulation performance is observed when using 20% of HMS and 50% of water-cement ratio.

A transient short-hot-wire technique has been presented for simultaneous measurements of the thermal conductivity and diffusivity of fluids under the microgravity condition. Two-dimensional heat conduction equations for concentric cylinders with various radius ration and length-diameter ratio have been solved numerically by taking account of the heat capacity of the inner cylinder. A unique relation between the non-dimensional temperature of inner cylinder and Fourier number is obtained for a wide range of thermal properties of the fluids, because the relation if found to be almost independent of these properties. Then the characteristic could be utilized as a masterplot to evaluate both the thermal conductivity and diffusivity. In principle, this method is proved to have an error within 1% for both of these properties.

Bamboo is representing environmentally friendly building finishing materials as proven in the former researches. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the application properties of cementitious materials modified with bamboo charcoal as building finish materials. Flow test in fresh condition was conducted to assess the workability. Compressive and bending strength were measured after harding. As the thermal properties, thermal conductivity and density were measured. The properties were surpassing over them in case of using the pine charcoal in every tests. The thermal conductivity of them increased with the modified ratio. After the modified ratio 50%, the thermal conductivity decreased. Insolation and absorption performance is due to the lower density by modification of bamboo charcoal.

The temperature distributions of concrete structures strongly depend on the value of thermal conductivity of concrete. However, the thermal conductivity of concrete varies according to the composition of the constituents and the temperature and moisture conditions of concrete, which cause difficulty in accurately predicting the thermal conductivity value in concrete. For this reason, in this study, back-propagation neural network models on the basis of experimental values carried out by previous researchers have been utilized to effectively account for the influence of these variables. The neural networks were trained by 124 data sets with eleven parameters: nine concrete composition parameters (the ratio of water-cement, the percentage of fine and coarse aggregate, and the unit weight of water, cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, fly ash and silica fume) and two concrete state parameters (the temperature and water content of concrete). Finally, the trained neural network models were evaluated by applying to other 28 measured values not included in the training of the neural networks. The result indicated that the proposed method using a back-propagation neural algorithm was effective at predicting the thermal conductivity of concrete.
The thermal conductivity and viscosity(or workability) of graphite-added bentonite grouts and cementitious grouts have been evaluated and compared to determine the suitability of these materials for backfilling vertical boreholes of ground heat exchangers. Seven bentonite grouts from different product sources and a portland cement grout with various mixture ratios were considered in this paper. As a new additive for grout, we choose graphite which has high thermal conductivity. The bentonite grouts indicate that the thermal conductivity and viscosity increase with the content of bentonite or with an addition of Graphite compared with that of silica sand. In case of cementitious grout also increase the thermal conductivity and decrease the workability dramatically though an addition of Graphite. Therefore, we cautiously select the amount of graphite and mixture ratio of bentonite and cement considering not only thermal conductivity but also viscosity for the optimum condition of backfilling material.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the properties of strength and thermal conductivity of floor cement mortal using copper fiber. Compressive strength thermal conductivity and length change are tested. According to the experimental results, compressive strength, thermal strength and thermal conductivity of mortar using copper finer are shown to be increased with increase of the contents of copper fiber and the aspect ratio. In case of length change of cement mortar using copper fiber also shows deline tendency compared with that of plain mortar.

Transient heat transfer characteristics in th radiant heating panel with heat diffusion fin were predicted by numerical analysis. Thermal behaviors of panel, such as temperature distributions in panel and convective and radiative heat fluxes in panel surface with advance of time, were obtained for several important parameters. The performance and thermal comfort of heating panel were studied and compared for various design conditions, such as pipe pitch, area ratio and thermal conductivity of optimal design of the new heating panels with heat diffusion fin. It was concluded that the efficient area ratio of heat diffusion fin is about 0.5, and the greater the thermal conductivity of fin is, the better the performance of panel is.
Effective thermal conductivity of particulate reinforced composite has been predicted by Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method modified with Mori-Tanaka's mean field theory. The predicted results are compared with the experimental results from the literature. The model composite is polymer matrix filled with ceramic particles such as silica, alumina, and aluminum nitride. The preliminary examination by Eshelby type model shows that the predicted results are in good agreements with the experimental results for the composite with perfect spherical filler. As the shape of filler deviates from the perfect sphere, the predicted error increases. By using the aspect ratio of the filler deduced from the fixed filler volume fraction of 30%, the predicted results coincide well with the experimental results for filler volume fraction of 40% or less. Beyond this fraction, the predicted error increases rapidly. It can be finally concluded from the study that Eshelby type model can be applied to predict the thermal conductivity of the particulate composite with filler volume fraction less than 40%.
When thermal conductivity of rock is measured with PEDB (Portable Electronic Divided Bar) in a laboratory, it can be greatly influenced by the change of room temperature. Therefore, measuring the thermal conductivity in a thermo-hygrostat is necessary, where it can remain in its constant temperature and humidity condition. In this study, a system for thermal conductivity measurement in a thermo-hygrostat has been set up and the thermal conductivities for the 45 samples collected from GH3 and GH4 boreholes in Ulleung Island have been measured both in dry and saturated conditions. Also, the correlations between those thermal conductivities, density, and effective porosity have been discussed. As a result of correlation analysis among the thermal conductivity, density, and effective porosity, it showed higher correlation with dry samples than saturated samples. Especially, thermal conductivity ratio between saturated and dry conditions shows very high correlation ($R^2=0.90$) with effective porosity.
