  • It is important to realize that benzoate was intercalated into hydrotalcite (HTC-Bz) by the co-precipitation method. In this case, acrylic coating with 0.5 wt% HTC-Bz was deposited on carbon steel using the spin coating method. Next, the HTC-Bz structure was characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). In fact, an ultraviolet vision spectroscopy (UV-Vis) was used to determine the benzoate content in HTC-Bz, and the UV absorption ability of HTC-Bz. Using electrochemical techniques, water contact angle measurement, and thermal-gravimetric analysis, we compared the protective properties before and after QUV test, hydrophobicity and the thermal stability of acrylic coating containing HTC-Bz. The obtained results showed that HTC-Bz with a plate-like structure was successfully synthesized; benzoate was intercalated into the interlayer of hydrotalcite with a concentration of 28 wt%. Additionally, it was noted that HTC-Bz has an UV absorption peak at 225 nm. In conclusion, the addition of HTC-Bz enhanced the UV stability, hydrophobicity and the thermal stability of acrylic coating.

  • In this study, cavitation characteristics of a thermal spray coating were evaluated in order to improve durability and cavitation resistance. For a coating material, a Ni-based self-fluxing alloy was thermal-sprayed over a ALBC3 alloy substrate and subsequently modified by heat treatment. The resulted self-fluxing coating layer had relatively high hardness compared to the base material, and thus would be expected to exhibit good durability. However, the cavitation characteristics were deteriorated due to the intrinsic porous structure of the coating. Therefore, it is essential to optimize heat treatment condition during thermal spraying coating process for self-fluxing alloy, and in this research the increase in heat treatment temperature is thought to increase the fluidity of B and Si in the self-fluxing alloy and to remove pores or defects, leading to the characteristics enhancement.

  • Ni-rich layered oxides $Li(Ni_xCo_yMn_z)O_2$ (x + y + z = 1) have been extensively studied in recent times owing to their high capacity and low cost and can possibly replace $LiCoO_2$ in the near future. However, these layered oxides suffer from problems related to the capacity fading, thermal stability, and safety at high voltages. In this study, we use surface coating as a strategy to improve the thermal stability at higher voltages. The uniform and conformal $Al_2O_3$ coating on prefabricated electrodes using atomic layer deposition significantly prevented surface degradation over prolonged cycling. Initial capacity of 190, 199, 188 and $166mAh\;g^{-1}$ is obtained for pristine, 2, 5 and 10 cycles of ALD coated samples at 0.2C and maintains 145, 158, 151 and $130mAh\;g^{-1}$ for high current rate of 2C in room temperature. The two-cycle $Al_2O_3$ modified cathode retained 75% of its capacity after 500 cycles at 5C with 0.05% capacity decay per cycle, compared with 46.5% retention for a pristine electrode, at an elevated temperature. Despite the insulating nature of the $Al_2O_3$ coating, a thin layer is sufficient to improve the capacity retention at a high temperature. The $Al_2O_3$ coating can prevent the detrimental surface reactions at a high temperature. Thus, the morphology of the active material is well-maintained even after extensive cycling, whereas the bare electrode undergoes severe degradation.

  • This paper investigated optimum process conditions of coating yarn for awning fabric. For this purpose, the simulation for processability and yarn quality using SPSS statistics package was carried out, and PP/TPO and PET/PVC coating yarns specimens were made with variation of extruder temperature and feed speed of core yarn on the yarn coating machine for examining simulation result. It was revealed that optimum coating conditions of PP/TPO 1000d coating yarn were extruder temperature $150^{\circ}C$, and core yarn feed speed 400~500m/min. Mechanical property and thermal shrinkage of PP/TPO coating yarn made at this conditions were best and core evenness rates of these coating yarns by yarn compression tester were also superior, which was certified by SEM photograph. In addition, these experimental results were coincided with simulation results. It was found that, in PET/PVC coating yarn, yarn physical properties between 1500d and 1200d coated yarns were not shown any difference, and core evenness rates of these coating yarns were superior. It revealed and concluded that these simulated coating conditions are applicable to production field.

  • Aim of our study is finding adsorbents suitable for pre-concentration of chemical warfare agents (CWAs). We considered Tenax, bare silica and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated silica as adsorbents for dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) and dipropylene glycol methyl ether (DPGME). Tenax showed lower thermal stability, and therefore, desorption of CWA simulants and decomposition of Tenax took place simultaneously. Silica-based adsorbents showed higher thermal stabilities than Tenax. A drawback of silica was that adsorption of CWA simulant (DMMP) was significantly reduced by pre-treatment of the adsorbents with humid air. In the case of PDMS-coated silica, influence of humidity for CWA simulant adsorption was less pronounced due to the hydrophobic nature of PDMS-coating. We propose that PDMS-coated silica can be of potential importance as adsorbent of CWAs for their pre-concentration, which can facilitate detection of these CWAs.

  • In this study, the author investigated the effects of strengthening treatments on the mechanical properties of plasma sprayed Ni-base self fluxing alloy. Strengthening treatments for sprayed specimens were carried out in 4 different temperature conditions in vacuum furnace. The mechanical properties, such as microhardness, thermal shock resistance and erosion resistance were tested for the sprayed specimens after strengthening treatments. And it was proved that the mechanical properties of coating layer were much improved by strengthening treatments.

  • Cold gas dynamic spray is a relatively new coating process by which coatings can be produced without significant heating during the process. Cold-spray uses supersonic gas flow to carry metallic powders to the substrate. Its low process temperature can minimize thermal stress and also reduce the deformation of the substrate. Most researches on cold-spray have focused on micro scale coating, but in this study macro scale deposition was conducted. Properties of aluminum layer by cold-spray deposition such as coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), modulus of elasticity. hardness, and electric conductivity were measured. The results showed that properties of aluminum layer by cold-spray deposition were different from properties of pure aluminum and aluminum alloy.

  • An experimental study was performed to discover the effect of environmental conditions on the rolling resistance behavior of pure silver and lead coated 52100 bearing steel. Pure silver and lead coatings were produced by a thermal evaporation coating method. Experiments using a thrust ball bearing-typed rolling test-rig were performed under vacuum, dry air and controlled humidity conditions. Results showed that agglomeration of particles were suppressed in vacuum environment and resulted in low and stable rolling resistance by shakedown phenomena. Also, humidity related closely to the agglomeration of particles and the rolling resistance after the failure of coated layer.
