  • Sixteen reinforced concrete laboratory specimens were used to evaluate a number of corrosion prevention methods under an accelerated (6 months) testing program. The use of galvanic thermal sprayed zinc, galvanic embedded anodes, a tri-silane sealer, an acrylic coating, and an epoxy/polyurethane coating was evaluated. The specimens received various treatments prior to exposure to accelerated corrosion. The performance of the treatments was evaluated with respect to corrosion currents, chloride ingress, extent of cracking, severity of rust staining, and visual inspection of the reinforcing steel after the conclusion of testing and dissection. Results indicated that the tri-silane sealer, the conjoint use of galvanic thermal sprayed zinc and epoxy/polyurethane coating, the epoxy/polyurethane coating, and acrylic coating performed better than the other methods tested. Higher chloride concentrations were measured in the vicinity of embedded zinc anodes.

  • Thermal spray coating process has proven to be effective at producing hard, dense, wear resistance coatings on the relatively mild substrates. Among several spraying techniques, HVOF (High Velocity Oxygen Fuel) and plasma coating processes, which are preferentially used for the wear resistance application such as capstans, have been applied in this study. The effects of pre-treatment, it-process and post-treatment parameters on the wear and mechanical properties of WC+12%Co, Cr3C2 and Al2O3 powder coatings have been investigated and correlated with the microstructures. The results indicated that the carbide coating was more preferable to the oxide coatings and the post-treatments consisting of vacuum annealing and sealing on carbide coatings led to significant improvements in wear resistance, adhesive strength and coating phase stabilization over the other processing techniques in this application.

  • Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings have been widely applied to the mechanical components, cutting tools due to properties of high hardness and wear resistance. Among them, hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) coatings are well-known for their low friction properties, stable production of thin and thick film, they were reported to be easily worn away under high temperature. Non-hydrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) is an ideal for industrial applicability due to good thermal stability from high $sp^3$-bonding fraction ranging from 70 to 80 %. However, the large compressive stress of ta-C coating limits to apply thick ta-C coating. In this study, the thick ta-C coating was deposited onto Inconel alloy disk by the FCVA technique. The thickness of the ta-C coating was about $3.5{\mu}m$. The tribological behaviors of ta-C coated disks sliding against $Si_3N_4$ balls were examined under elevated temperature divided into 23, 100, 200 and $300^{\circ}C$. The range of temperature was setting up until peel off observed. The experimental results showed that the friction coefficient was decreased from 0.14 to 0.05 with increasing temperature up to $200^{\circ}C$. At $300^{\circ}C$, the friction coefficient was dramatically increased over 5,000 cycles and then delaminated. These phenomenon was summarized two kinds of reasons: (1) Thermal degradation and (2) graphitization of ta-C coating. At first, the reason of thermal degradation was demonstrated by wear rate calculation. The wear rate of ta-C coatings showed an increasing trend with elevated temperature. For investigation of relationship between hardness and graphitization, thick ta-C coatings(2, 3 and $5{\mu}m$) were additionally deposited. As the thickness of ta-C coating was increased, hardness decreased from 58 to 49 GPa, which means that graphitization was accelerated. Therefore, now we are trying to increase $sp^3$ fraction of ta-C coating and control the coating parameters for thermal stability of thick ta-C at high temperatures.

  • In the present study, immersion corrosion characteristics of Zn and Al thermal spray coating with sealer for the seawater heat exchanger are experimentally investigated. Total 8 coating types of Zn and Al thermal spray coating with silicone and epoxy sealer were tested with immersion corrosion testing in $80^{\circ}C$ 3.5%w NaCl solution and compared the corrosion characteristics between each coatings. To investigate the corrosion characteristics of the specimens, AC impedance, SEM, and thermal diffusivity were acquired and analyzed. As a result, on the surface of the specimens with silicone and epoxy sealer, blister did not occurred, so the sealers might be effective at increasing the corrosion resistance of the specimens immersed in the NaCl solution.

  • In this paper, the process of electro Ni and electro Cr plating is studied for the purpose of thermal barrier to protect the inner wall combustion chamber. The chamber is under the environment of very high temperature and high pressure when propellants burn in there. As one of the thermal barrier coatings, Zr-based thermal spray coating has been applied to the chamber. However, peeling of coating layer can occur under such a hard condition because of the difference of thermal expansion coefficients between the ceramic and the metallic wall. We study the characteristics of Ni-Cr coating and establish its process. It is found that the thickness of over $100{\mu}m$ of Ni and Cr coating layers with the uniformity of ${\pm}10%$ can be obtained with the used of as-developed plating bath.

  • Due to excellent corrosion resistance, in particular against sea water, Al-2wt.$\%$Zn alloys have been used as the sacrifice anode material for tube of the ORV. Al-2wt.$\%$Zn alloys thermal-sprayed coating, however, were spalled on the lower part of ORV due to the lack of bonding strength between base material and coating layer and the dropping energy of sea water, To overcome the problems of the thermal spray coating, we developed the cladded tube manufacturing process by coextrusion of the clad and base metal. The corrosion resistance of cladded tube was improved by two times at least, compared with that of the present thermal spray coated vaporizer tubes.

  • Characteristics of the wear resistance thermal sprayed coatings was investigated in order to determine proper coating process. Hardness evaluation and microstructural observation were conducted to find relationship between coating characteristics and its wear performance. It was found that HVOF process would give better properties than arc thermal process in terms of hardness and adhesion strength which resultantly determine wear performance of the coatings.

  • Electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) process has currently been applied to thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for aircraft engines. Due to unique columnar structure, EB-PVD TBCs have advantages in resistances to thermal shock and thermal cycle for their applications, compared to films prepared by plasma spray By the EB-PVD equipment, we successfully obtained yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) layer which has columnar and feather like structure including a large amount of nano size pores and gaps. The EB-PVD technique has been developed for coating functional perovskite type oxides such as (La, Sr)MnO3. Electrode properties have been improved by interface and structural control.
