  • This paper proposes the state-space model of the thermal behavior of the spindle system to establish dynamic mathematical model of thermal characteristics in machine tool spindle system. the model is derived form physical law of heat transfer and thermoelasticity and represents the thermal behavior induced by uneven thermal expansions whitin a bearing. The model, which is sucessfully validated for two typical configurations of high speed spindle assembles, provides a tool for understanding the basis mechanics of induced thermal expansion as a function of initial preload, spindle speed and housing cooling conditions.

  • This study presents a numerical model to analyze dynamic thermal behavior of a hot chuck designed for flip-chip bonders. The hot chuck of concern is a heater which has been specifically developed for accomplishing high-speed and ultra-precision soldering. The characteristic features are radiative heat source and the heating tool made of a material of high thermal diffusivity. A physical modeling has been conducted for the network of heat transport. A simplified finite volume model is deviced to simulate time-dependent thermal behavior of the heating tool on which soldering is achieved. The reliability of the proposed numerical model is verified experimentally. A series of numerical tests illustrate the usefulness of the numerical model in design analysis.

  • Thermal creep is a key property of zircaloy cladding. CZ developed by CGN is a new zircaloy used as PWR fuel cladding. This research is devoted to investigating the thermal creep behavior of CZ and build the thermal creep model of CZ. Twenty internal pressure creep tests were conducted, and the ranges of temperature and Tresca stress were 320-430 ℃ and 70-300 MPa, respectively. Real-time creep data were analyzed by separating primary creep and steady-state creep. Based on Soderberg model and creep test data, CZ thermal creep model is derived. As a whole, the mean value and the standard deviation of P/M of CZ saturated primary creep strain are very close to these from steady-state creep rate, however, the predictive effect of primary creep is less satisfactory. Four conditions, where there exists large deviation between predicted values and test data, are 320 ℃ and 300 MPa, 350 ℃ and 190 MPa, 380 ℃ and 160 MPa, 380 ℃ and 190 MPa, respectively. As primary creep was much smaller than steady-state creep in long-time operation, the thermal creep model built can be applied to predict the thermal creep behavior of CZ cladding.

  • A numerical and experimental study is made of thermal behavior of a hot chuck which is specially designed for flip-chip bonders. The hot chuck consists of radiant heat sources and a heated plate of very high conductivity, which is for achievement of high-speed heat-up. A simplified numerical model is developed to simulate unsteady thermal behavior of the heated plate. Parallel experimental work is also conducted for a prototype of the hot chuck. Based on the experimental data, the numerical model is tuned to improve the reliability and accuracy. Design analysis using the numerical model is conducted. The results of numerical computations illustrate that the radiant heater system adopted in this study satisfies the key design requirements for a high-performance hot chuck.

  • A one-dimensional heat transfer model for the vertical borehole system is derived in this study to predict the thermal behavior of the system and surrounding soil. In this model the U-tube is replaced with one effective tube of effective diameter which is surrounded by concentric grout region. All thermal resistances of borehole are counted in the grout region with effective thermal conductivity of grout. Effective thermal conductivity of grout and sand are calculated through parameter estimation. The validity of this model is accomplished through comparison of the predicted temperature profiles of the model with experimental data.

  • Thermal fluid mixing behavior during a postulated medium-size hot leg break loss of coolant accident is analyzed for the international comparative assessment study on pressurized thermal shock (PTS-ICAS) proposed by OECD-NEA. The applicability of RELAP5 code to analyze thermal fluid mixing behavior is evaluated through a simple modeling relevant to the problem constraints. Based on the calculation result, the onset of Thermal stratification is investigated using Theofanous's empirical correlation. Sensitivity calculations using a fine node model and crossflow model are also performed to evaluate the modeling capability on multi-dimensional characteristics related to thermal fluid mixing.

  • The Micro circular diaphragm (MCD) is the mechanical actuator part used in the micro electro-mechanical sensors (MEMS) that combine electrical and mechanical components. These actuators are working under harsh mechanical and thermal conditions, so it is very important to study the mechanical and thermal behaviors of these actuators, in order to do with its function successfully. The objective of this paper is to determine the thermo-mechanical behavior of MCD by developing the traditional bulge test technique to achieve the aims of this work. The specimen is first pre-stressed to ensure that is no initial deflection before applied the loads on diaphragm and then clamped between two plates, a differential pressure (P) and temperature ($T_b$) is leading to a deformation of the MCD. Analytical formulation of developed bulge test technique for MCD thermo-mechanical characterization was established with taking in-to account effect of the residual strength from pre-stressed loading. These makes the plane-strain bulge test ideal for studying the mechanical and thermal behavior of diaphragm in both the elastic and plastic regimes. The differential specimen thickness due to bulge effect to describe the mechanical behavior, and the temperature effect on the MCD material properties to study the thermal behavior under deformation were discussed. A finite element model (FEM) can be extended to apply for investigating the reliability of the proposed bulge test of MCD and compare between the FEM results and another one from analytical calculus. The results show that, the good convergence between the finite element model and analytical model.

  • In nuclear power plant (NPP) accidents, the containment is subject to high temperatures and high internal pressures, which may further trigger serious chain accidents such as core meltdown and hydrogen explosion, resulting in a significantly higher accident level. Therefore, studying the mechanical performance of a containment under high temperature and high internal pressure is relevant to the safety of NPPs. Based on similarity principles, the 1:3.2 scale model of a prestressed concrete containment vessel (PCCV) of a NPP was designed. The loading method, which considers the thermal-pressure coupling conditions, was used. The mechanical response of the PCCV was investigated with a simultaneous increase in internal pressure and temperature, and the failure mechanism of the PCCV under thermal-pressure coupling conditions was revealed.
