  • The primary treatment modality of malignant tumors of the nasopharynx is radiation therapy owing to its inaccessibility to surgical intervention. Over the last two decades there were many changes in techniques of delivery, which include the use of higher doses of radiotherapy, the use of wide radiation field, including the elective radiation of the whole neck, the combined use of brachy- and teletherapy, and the use of split-course therapy. In spite of these advances local and regional recurrences remain the major cause of death. As a boost therapy after external irradiation, high-dose-rate intracavitary irradiation using remote control afterloading system(RALS) was used in two patients. Our results were satisfactory, however, this procedure should only be performed by those who have developed enough expertise in the use of intracavitary techniques for the treatment of nasopharyngeal cancer and have a supportive team including a physicist, dosimetrist, nurse, and trained technologist.

  • PURPOSE: Despite the widespread occurrence in the general population, few studies have directly evaluated the effects of shingles on non-specific neck pain (NSNP). This study investigated whether sensory training or therapeutic stretching exercises are more effective in increasing neck mobility and reducing neck pain in chronic NSNP patients. METHODS: Eighty-one subjects aged between 20 and 32 years with chronic neck pain (> six months), were allocated randomly to three groups: sensorimotor training group (STG), therapeutic stretching group (TSG), and home exercise group (HEG). All participants received a half-hour training session, three times weekly for six weeks. The outcomes were evaluated using the neck disability index for measuring neck pain, and a universal goniometer to measure the cervical passive range of motion before and after the six-week intervention. RESULTS: The post-test neck disability index scores in the STG (t = 4.86) and TSG (t = 3.24) were decreased significantly (p < .05). The passive range of motion changes in all cervical movements in the STG was increased significantly (p < .05) after intervention compared to those in the other two groups. CONCLUSION: Sensorimotor training using chin tuck exercises may improve neck pain and mobility in subjects with chronic NSNP.

  • Theranostics, a composite word of therapy and diagnosis, is known as personalized medicine and the concept of diagnosis and treatment at the same time. In nuclear medicine, it means performing both therapeutic and diagnostic radioisotope therapy using the same target molecule. The increased production and utilization of 64Cu opens a new era of theranostics. The studies introduced here have shown that 64CuCl2 and various compounds or biomolecules labeled with 64Cu are unique radiopharmaceuticals with physiological properties suitable for use as diagnostic and therapeutic agents. So far, these two abilities have been described only for radioactive iodine. Although 64Cu has complex chemical properties compared to other PET radioisotopes such as 68Ga, it has an appropriate half-life and enables high-quality PET images similar to 18F, which is an advantage in terms of diagnosis. In addition, since it also has therapeutic properties through the release of β- particles and Auger electrons by electron capture, radiopharmaceuticals using 64Cu stand for innovative radiopharmaceuticals for theranostic purposes. Therefore, based on the initial results obtained using 64Cu as a therapeutic agent, it is expected that additional research on the application of 64Cu will lead to a new era in the theranostics field.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a 'Solution-Focused Brief Play Therapy' and analyze children's responses to its various therapeutic techniques. The participants were three boys and three girls, all aged between 11 and 10 years, living in an orphanage on the outskirts of Seoul. Each child received 7-10 therapy sessions, each lasting 90 minutes. All sessions were video-taped and recorded verbatim. These data, along with the observational notes recorded by the researcher, were subjected to a qualitative data analysis(Creswell, 2002). The results showed not only that children set their goals and evaluated themselves objectively but also suggested solutions to meet their goals by doing something meaningful to themselves.

  • Advances in molecular biology contribute to the understanding genetic mechanism of psychiatric disorders. They have renewed hope for the discovery of disease relevant gene. However, the results somewhat confused. And we will wait for a long time for the application of gene therapy in schizophreniar. Fortunately we could classified the schizophrenia with genotypes of dopamine and serotonin receptors. It is expected that this genetic classification could provide key strategy for the therapeutic application in biological treatment for schizophrenia. The purpose of this article is to call attention of the institute participants to linkage, association, mRNA expression, genotypic classification and to the need for more systemic research. The author summarized the modified methods which were done in his laboratory in appendix.

  • Rebamipide, 2-(4-chlorobenzoylamino)-3-[2(1H)-quinolinone-4-yl]-propionic acid, a novel antipeptic ulcer agent, has been reported to prevent various acute experimental gastric mucosal lesions and to accelerate the healing of chronic ulcers. Therapeutic effect of rebamipide was investigated with regard to the inhibitory effect on xanthine oxidase activity and type conversion of the enzyme which play a profound role in oxygen radicals generation system. Intraperitoneal administration of rebamipide at 60 mg/kg body weight reduced the xanthine oxidase activity, lipid peroxide content in ammonia induced hemorrhagic lesion. These results suggest that the therapeutic effect of rebamipide on gastric mucosal lesion may be in part due to the inhibitory activity of xanthine oxidase and type conversion rate of the enzyme.

  • The author reported a case of short-term dynamic psychotherapy in which relatively good therapeutic results were obtained. And I reviewed several therapeutic factors thought to be important in shot-term dynamic psychotherapy from various literatures. In this case, the frequency of session was limited due to her current reality situations. She had suffered from some adjustmental problems and marital conflict before the onset of the illness. The author could grasp the cental theme of her problems early in treatment period and discussed over it including it's influence on current situation and early childhood with th patient. We also discussed about the relationship between the past and current reality so that she could realize her real problem. At the same time, therapeutic effect was enhanced by family therapy and temporary use of medication.
