This study determines the best composite grade to minimize the void of aggregate mixture based on the maximum density theory in an attempt to suggest a mix proportion method design for asphalt mixtures. Study results show that the grading curve with the maximum mass per unit capacity of each aggregate mixture satisfied the KS standards and the optimum AP content to meet the optimal asphalt mixture void rate of 4$\%$ was 5.7$\%$, less than the optimum AP content of 6.5$\%$ suggested in the Marshal mix proportion method design. At the same time, the asphalt mixture produced based upon the suggested mix proportion method had a flow value 17$\%$ lower than that of asphalt mixture produced according to the Marshal method, while its density was greater by 0.06$\~$0.09. This suggests that the introduced mix proportion method design helps to improve the shape flexibility and crack-resistance of asphalt concrete.
Instability of oblique detonation waves (ODW) at off-attaching condition was investigated through a series of numerical simulations. Two-dimensional wedge of finite length was considered in $H_2/O_2/N_2$ mixtures at superdetonative condition. Numerical simulation was carried out with a compressible fluid dynamics code and a detailed hydrogen-oxygen combustion mechanism. Present result reveals that there is a chemical kinetic limit of the ODW detachment, in addition to the theoretical limit predicted by Rankine-Hugoniot theory with equilibrium chemistry. Result also presents that ODW still attaches at a wedge as an oblique shock-induced flame showing periodically unstable motion, if the Rankine-Hugoniot limit of detachment is satisfied but the chemical kinetic limit is not. Mechanism of the periodic instability is considered as interactions of shock and reaction waves coupled with chemical kinetic effects. From the investigation of characteristic chemical time, condition of the periodic instability is identified as follows; at the detaching condition of the Rankine-Hugoniot theory, (1) flow residence time is smaller than the chemical characteristic time, behind the detached shock wave with heat addition, (2) flow residence time should be greater than the chemical characteristic time, behind an oblique shock wave without heat addition.
The cmc's of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/Triton X-100 surfactant mixtures were determined by surface tension measurement at various surfactant compositions. The cmc values were lower than those predicted from ideal mixture. The regular solution theory was applied to calculate the interaction parameter, micellar composition, and the activity coefficients of surfactants in the mixed micelle. The interaction parameter (${\beta}$) was - 2.1. The nonideality arised largely from decreased activity of SDS in the mixed micelle. The mean aggregation numbers (${\bar{n}}$) and micropolarity of hydrocarbon region of the mixed micelles were determined by luminescence probe techniques. The total aggregation number (${\bar{n}}_{SDS}+{\bar{n}}_{TX}$) in mixed micelles showed little dependency on the composition of the micelle. The apparent dielectric constant of the hydrocarbon region of the micelle vs micellar composition plot showed positive deviation from linearity. Emission and emission quenching of excited tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(Ⅱ) cation, $(Ru(bpy)_3^{2+})$, by methylviologen ($MV^{2+}$) were also investigated in the mixed micellar solutions. The quenching rate was lowest when the mole fraction of SDS in the surfactant mixtures (${\alpha}_{SDS}$) is about 0.25 and highest at ${\alpha}_{SDS}$ = 0.85. This was explained in terms of combined effects of binding of the cations with the micelle and mobility of the bound cations on the surface of the micelles.
This research focused on the effects of heavy metals on the biomonitoring activity of genetically engineered bioluminescent bacteria, Pseudomonas putida mt-2 KG1206. KG1206 was exposed to single or binary mixtures of different heavy metals as well as soils contaminated with heavy metals. In case of single exposure with different inducer pollutant, the toxicity order was as followings : As(III) > Cd, As(V) >> Cu, Cr(VI). The toxic effects of the binary mixtures was compared to the expected effect based on a simple theory of probabilities. The interactive effects were mostly additive, while in few cases antgonistic and synergistic mode of action was observed for some concentration combinations. No considerable correlation was found between the total metal contents in soils and the bioluminescence activity of each sample. However, statistically significant differences (p = 0.0102) were observed between two groups, classified based on arsenite contamination. These results demonstrate the usage of recombinant bioluminescent microorganism in biomonitoring and the complex interactive effects of metals.
Kinetic studies on solvolytic reactions of 1-and 2-naphthalene sulfonyl chlorides in ethanol-water mixtures have been carried out by means of conductometry at several temperatures. The rate constant for 2-naphthyl compound was larger than that for 1-naphthyl compound. This was contrary to the prediction of MO theory and could be rationalized as due to the peri-hydrogen effect in the transition state for 1-naphthyl compound. Based on m values of Winstein plots and n values of Kivinen pacolots it was concluded that the solvolytic displacement of the two naphthalene sulfonyl chlorides in ethanol-water mixtures proceed via $S_N2$ process.
The critical micelle concentration(CMC) and the counterion binding $constant(\beta)$ at the CMC of the mixtures of Sodium dodecylsulfate(SDS) with Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate(DBS) in aqueous solutions have been determined from the concentration dependence of electrical conductance at several temperatures from $15^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C.$ Thermodynamic parameters(${\Delta}C_p,\;{\Delta}G_m^{\circ},\;{\Delta}H_m^{\circ}$ 및 ${\Delta}S_m^{\circ}$ and ${\Delta}C_p$), associated with the micelle formation of SDS/DBS mixtures, have been estimated from the temperature dependence of CMC and $\beta$ values. The measured values of ${\Delta}G_m^{\circ}\;and\;{\Delta}C_p$ are negative but the values of ${\Delta}S_m/^{\circ}$ are positive in the whole measured temperature region. The significance of these thermodynamic parameters and their relation to the theory of the micelle formation of SDS/DBS mixtures have been also considered.

For the first time, the higher-order shear and normal deformable plate theory (HOSNDPT) is used for the vibration and flutter analyses of the multilayer functionally graded graphene platelets reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) plates under supersonic airflow. For modeling the supersonic airflow, the linear piston theory is adopted. In HOSNDPT, Legendre polynomials are used to approximate the components of the displacement field in the thickness direction. So, all stress and strain components are encountered. Either uniform or three kinds of non-uniform distribution of graphene platelets (GPLs) into polymer matrix are considered. The Young modulus of the FG-GPLRC plate is estimated by the modified Halpin-Tsai model, while the Poisson ratio and mass density are determined by the rule of mixtures. The Hamilton's principle is used to obtain the governing equations of motion and the associated boundary conditions of the plate. For solving the plate's equations of motion, the Galerkin approach is applied. A comparison for the natural frequencies obtained based on the present investigation and those of three-dimensional elasticity theory shows a very good agreement. The flutter boundaries for FG-GPLRC plates based on HOSNDPT are described and the effects of GPL distribution patterns, the geometrical parameters and the weight fraction of GPLs on the flutter frequencies and flutter aerodynamic pressure of the plate are studied in detail. The obtained results show that by increasing 0.5% of GPLs into polymer matrix, the flutter aerodynamic pressure increases approximately 117%, 145%, 166% and 196% for FG-O, FG-A, UD and FG-X distribution patterns, respectively.
Refractive index and speeds of sound for the binary mixture of isomer of butanol (1) + cyclohexane, benzene and toluene (2) were measured at 308.15 K. The measured data were used to calculate deviation in refractive index ${\Delta}n$, ultrasonic speed ${\Delta}u$, isentropic compressibility $K_s^E$, available volume $V_a$, excess intermolecular free length $L_f$ and molecular association $M_A$. All the derived properties were correlated with polynomial equation. Ultrasonic speed data were predicted using various empirical correlations like Nomoto, van Dael, impedance dependence and theoretically with Schaaff's collision factor theory (CFT). Jacobson free length theory (FLT) was used to calculate $L_f$. The measured refractive index was also correlated with various mixing rules. The deviation in refractive index Δn and ultrasonic speed ${\Delta}u$ was used to determine the intermolecular interactions.
In this research, the finite element analysis of piezocone penetration and dissipation tests has been conducted using the anisotropic elastoplastic-viscoplastic bounding surface model, virtual work equation, and theory of mixtures formulated in the Up[dated Lagrangian reference frame for the large deformation and finite strain nature of piezocone penetration. The formulated equations have been implemented into a finite element program. The cone resistance, excess pore water pressure, and dissipation of excess pore water pressure from the finite element analysis have been compared and investigated. An effective simulation could be performed with the use of the anisotropic and viscous soil model. The finite element formulations and the results are described in part 'I' and part 'II' respectively.
Some of the remarkable accomplishments mentioned in the special lecture recalling 38 years of my research on the development of herbicides can be summarized as follows; 1) The physiology, movement in the soil, and decomposition and/or inactivation of the phenoxy and other herbicides by the invention of the Raphanus test were elucidated. And these findings led to the establishment of the theory of herbicidal treatment layer with the result of the origination of the application of PCP in flooded lowland paddy, which opened new era of soil application of herbicides in lowland paddy. 2) The granulation of herbicides for lowland paddy including PCP urea was developed. 3) The fact that propanil has generic selectivity in gramineae was found. And propanil was distributed in rice growing regions of the world. In addition, satanil for upland and propanil/NAC for flooded lowland paddy, propanil mixtures, were developed. 4) 15 kinds of new herbicides derived from plant hormones developed in my laboratory were develop ed, and the research trends in the future were presented.
