The heat of hydration can be reduced through the use of retarding agents. Typical retarding agents include sugar and glucose. However, these significantly delay the setting of cement paste. For the efficient use of sugar and glucose for mass concrete construction, it is necessary to develop a technique that can provide a setting behavior equivalent to that of plain concrete. In this work, the temperature rise of cement paste was monitored with the addition of various retarders including sugar and glucose. Hydrated cement powder was made with a water to cement ratio of 5 in order to accelerate the retarded cement pastes. It was found that the addition of hydrated cement powder in retarded pastes reduced the maximum temperature of cement paste. The use of hydrated cement powder could also successfully reduce the time to reach the maximum temperature.
Hydration and physical characteristics of chemically-bonded phosphate ceramic (CBPC) binder based on dead-burned Mg-O with six different blends are investigated for efficient repair construction material by retarding set phase with $H_3BO_3$. The test specimen of the blender with silica fume shows higher compressive strength after 75 days. The CBPC with silica fume results in higher modulus of rupture that others. The test specimens of CBPC eludes lower calcium ion than that of OPC (Ordinay Portland Cement). The X-ray diffraction pattern shows that hydration results in the formation of magnesium hydroxide, M-S-H gel and $MgCO_3$ for the specimen with silica fumes. Combination with calcium for MgO is not desirable due to no formation of chemical bond between two components. Based on the experimental program, the mixture of MgO and silica fume shows efficient performance in strength and durability.

According to the recent tendency that the buildings in the downtown are gradually Manhattanized, the very thick massive concrete is selected as the foundation of architectures. By the way, because this mass concrete cannot be simultaneously pour in a great quantity due to the circumstance at the field, not only the questions on the unification between the concretes pour on the upper layer and the lower layer are presented but also the cracks by the internal force from the difference of hydration exothermic period are occurred, which are pointed out as the problems. Thus, this study performed Mock-up test to apply the hydration heat controlling method of massive concrete for horizontal partition pouring construction to the building sites for the purpose of securing the stability on the cracks by the internal force from the difference of hydration exothermic period on the upper layer and the lower layer of massive concrete and checked the efficiency. As the results of test, in case of setting time difference method by super retarder with 2 layers and 4 layers, the effect that temperature gaps between upper part and lower part were lowered and the possibility of crack occurrence was decreased as the peak time of the heat of hydration became delayed to the latter term could be confirmed.

Whereas the control of the hydration heat in mass concrete has been important as the concrete structures enlarge, many conventional strategies show some limitations in their effectiveness and practicality. Therefore, In this study, as a solution of controling the heat of hydration of mass concrete, a method to reduce the heat of hydration by controlling the hardening of cement was examined. The reduction of the hydration heat by the developed Phosphate Inorganic Salt was basically verified in the insulated boxes filled with binder paste or concrete mixture. That is, the effects of the Phosphate Inorganic Salt on the hydration heat, flow or slump, and compressive strength were analyzed in binary and ternary blended cement which is generally used for low heat. As a result, the internal maximum temperature rise induced by the hydration heat was decreased by 9.5~10.6% and 10.1~11.7% for binder paste and concrete mixed with the Phosphate Inorganic Salt, respectively. Besides, the delay of the time corresponding to the peak temperature was apparently observed, which is beneficial to the emission of the internal hydration heat in real structures. The Phosphate Inorganic Salt that was developed and verified by a series of the aforementioned experiments showed better performance than the existing ones in terms of the control of the hydration heat and other performance. It can be used for the purpose of hydration heat of mass concrete in the future.
This study focused on manufacturing an inorganic insulation material set with various amounts of calcium-sulfoaluminate (CSA) (hauyne) content for enhancing both workability (demolding, handling) and the high thermal insulating property. To carry out the experiment, the amounts of CSA utilized were 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, with anhydrous gypsum added in equal proportion to produce a stable formation. As the content of CSA increased, a sinking phenomenon occurred because of the hydration reaction from the slurry, so it was difficult to utilize a retarder normally used in the cement manufacturing process. However, an RCOOM surfactant was able to solve the local clumping problem from cement and CSA and obtain a rapid retarding effect, so it was included in this process at 0.3%. Furthermore, the cement fineness was not 7000 ㎠/g but rather 3300 ~ 4000 ㎠/g to prevent a rapid temperature increase in the slurry. The specific gravity of the sample manufactured with 20% CSA was approximately 0.11 g/㎤, and its thermal conductivity was 0.041 W/m·K, providing an excellent insulating property.
DSC was used to investigate the thermal mechanism of acorn and corn starch with or without saccharides on gelation and retrogradation. When the samples were starch-saccharide-water system (s-s-w), from measuring of gelation enthalpy and temperatures of initial gelation, peak and conclusion(T$\_$0/, T$\_$p/, T$\_$c/), those of s-s-w system were higher than those of stank-water system (s-w). The retrogradation enthalpy of acorn starch and corn starch was straightly increasing by DSC measurement as storage times. This increase meant slowly becoming recrygtallization of amylopectin. In retrogyadation process, the starch-saccharide-water system's enthalpy was also increased. After 7 days went, the value of the enthalpy was steady. Saccharides were retarding retrogrodation because of stopping the recrystallization of amylopectin. Especially in using fructose and maltose, the retrogradation effect of maltose was well. These elements took effect the number of juntion zone, one of equatorial OH and dynamic hydration number. As these three elements were increasing, a starch-Rel-system was stabilizing.

Cement industries are considered key industries for reducing carbon emissions, and efforts are off the ground to reduce the use of cement in the concrete sector. As a part of this effort, research is off the ground to utilize a large amount of industrial by-products that can be used as a substitute for a part of cement. Concrete using industrial by-products has advantages such as durability, environment friendliness and economical efficiency, but there are problems such as retarding and early-age strength deterioration. Therefore, this study aimed to reduce the use of cement and solve the problem of early-age strength deterioration while using fly ash, which is an industrial by-product. Accordingly, it was confirmed that the strength was improved at all ages irrespective of curing temperature by accelerating the hydration reaction by using high fineness cement. Subsequently, high fineness cement was partially replaced with fly ash and the strength development characteristics were examined. As a result, it was possible to exhibit strength equal to or higher than ordinary portland cement even at the early age. Also, it was confirmed that even when the fly ash is replaced by 30%, it is possible to shorten the time for dismantling the forms of vertical and horizontal members.

In summer and winter, the difference between the temperature during the day and that during the night is high, which leads to various problems during concrete placement, such as cracks and defects in the concrete as well as low durability and strength. Although nuclear power plant concrete is widely used for placement in all seasons, particular attention must be paid to its quality during the summer. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of a cooling method for mixing water, which is a commonly used hot weather precooling method, and the use of a retarder, on the characteristics of Nuclear Power Plant concrete. In the cooling method for mixing water, cold water at 5 was used, with 50% of the water content consisting of ice flakes. The effects of using a retarder were evaluated by reviewing the characteristics of the cement at the unset stage and after hardening. To evaluate the characteristics of the unset cement, we measured the slump, air volumes, setting times, and pressure strengths after hardening. Furthermore, we measured the heat of hydration at different temperatures; the loss of heat was minimized using insulation. Both the slump time and the complete ageing time of the air volume were found to be 120 min at $20^{\circ}C$ and 40 min at $40^{\circ}C$. In the case when the cooling method for mixing water was used and in the case when a retarder was used, the initial and final sets by penetration resistance were delayed, and the delay decreased with increasing air temperature. For the heat of hydration, the cooling method for mixing water not only lowered the maximum temperature but also delayed its attainment. However, the use of a retarder had no effect on the maximum temperature. Moreover, in the early ages (e.g., 3 and 7 days), the pressure strength of the concrete was lower than that of plain cement. However, the strength of 28-day concrete met the standard construction specifications.
