In order to investigate the distribution of the last Sea Intermediate Water (ESIW), CTD measurement was peformed in the last Sea of Korea during $8\~11$ November, 1994. ESIW was $2.0\~2.3^{\circ}C$ in potential temperature, $34.04\~34.06\%_{\circ}$ in salinity and $5.6\~6.1\;ml/l$ in of gen content on the isopycnic surface of 27.2 in potential density. The isopycnic surface of 27.2 which represented the layer of ESIW became shallower from about 200 m depth in the open sea to about 140 m depth near the coast. off the coast of Jukbyun, the 27.2 isopycnic surface was located at the depth of about 120 m and had a little higher potential temperature and salinity, lower oxygen content than those in the open sea. The ESIW on the continental shelf was higher about 0.8 ml/l in AOU, 0.02 in salinity than those of the ESIW in the open sea. These suggest that the ESIW on the continental shelf did not come from the North Korean Cold Water but originated from the open sea.

We have found that the east coast of Korea has had few sea fogs on January, February, November and December for the past 20 years by the analysis of monthly fog frequency and duration time. These phenomena appear to relate to the topographical characteristics of which the Taebaek Mountains descends toward the east to bar the radiation fog. On the other hand, the cause of occurring the spring and summer fog which has 90% of the whole frequency is divided into three cases. The first is the steam fog caused by the advection of the northeast cold air current on the East Sea due to the extension of Okhotsk High. The second is the advection fog caused by cooling and saturation of warm airmass advected on cold sea surface. And the last is the frontal fog caused by the supply of enough vapor due to the movement of low-pressure system and the advection of cold air behind a cold front. While, we simulate the sea fog for the period of the case studies by implementing fog prediction system(DUT-METRI) that makes it possible to forecast the fog in the vertical section of neighborhood of the East Sea and to predict the sea surface wind, relative humidity, ceiling height, visibility etc. Finally we verified this result by satellite image.

Understanding in climate effects on marine ecosystem is essential to utilize, predict, and conserve marine living resources in the 21st century. In this review paper, we summarized the past history and current status of Korean fisheries as well as the changes in climate and oceanographic phenomena since the 1960s. Ocean ecosystems in Korean waters can be divided into three, based on the marine commercial fish catches; the demersal ecosystem in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, the pelagic ecosystem in the Tsushima Warm Current from the East China Sea to the East/Japan Sea, and the demersal ecosystem in the northern part of the East/Japan Sea. Through the interdisciplinary retrospective analysis using available fisheries, oceanographic, and meteorological information in three important fish communities, the trend patterns in major commercial catches and the relationship between climate/environmental variability and responses of fish populations were identified. Much evidence revealed that marine ecosystems, including the fish community in Korean waters, has been seriously affected by oceanographic changes, and each species has responded differently. In general, species diversity is lessening, and mean trophic level of each ecosystem has decreased during the last $3\sim4$ decades. Future changes in fisheries due to global warming are also considered for major fisheries and aquaculture in Korean waters.

With the increases in oil and gas prices, and energy consumption, drillship construction has increased during the last decade. A drillship using a dynamic positioning (DP) system to maintain its position and heading angle during drilling operations. In addition, a drillship is equipped with a moonpool structure to allow its drilling systems to be operated in the midship section. A drillship for the North Sea is specially designed to endure harsh environmental loads. For safe operation in the North Sea, the drillship should have good motion response and robust hull strength. A break water should be considered on the bow and side deck to prevent the green water on deck phenomenon from incoming waves. In addition, the moonpool should be designed to reduce the speed loss and resonance motion. In this study, the hydrodynamic characteristics of a drillship for the North Sea were examined in relation to the motion, wave loads, green water, and moonpool resonance in the initial design stage.
This paper will examine some past and current issues concerning the Republic of Korea's national strategy, focusing predominantly upon how the ROK should respond to the urgent maritime-oriented strategy highlighted by the recent developments and achievements of national prosperity achieved during last three decades and identify some of successful cases in East Asia. Some consideration will also be given to more general emergent issues of trends and developments of East Asian countries which might affect to define the ROK's future national strategy in the context of its national grand strategy to enhance national interests and prosperity. ROK is especially dependent upon open Sea Lanes of Communication (SLOC) and its national security emphasizes the sea as the medium of geopolitical and geo-economic development, given the sea known as core geographic option remains that ROK is an important maritime power, ranking the world-level nation in term of GDP, sea-borne trade, container processing capability, shipbuilding capacity and so on. It should be apparent, therefore, that ROK's national strategic development depends upon the relationship between its peninsula geography and its national development based on sea-borne economic growth and its maritime-oriented future national strategy will be the best option to maintain its national development and economic prosperity.
Various methods to detect the phytoplankton/red tide blooms in the oceanic waters have been developed and tested on satellite ocean color imagery since the last two and half decades, but accurate detection of blooms with these methods remains challenging in optically complex turbid waters, mainly because of the eventual interference of absorbing and scattering properties of dissolved organic and particulate inorganic matters with these methods. The present study introduces a new method called Red tide Index (Rl), providing indices which behave as a good measure of detecting red tide algal blooms in high scattering and absorbing waters of the Korean South Sea and Yellow Sea. The effectiveness of this method in identifying and locating red tides is compared with the standard Ocean Chlorophyll 4 (OC4) bio-optical algorithm applied to SeaWiFS ocean imagery, acquired during two bloom episodes on 27 March 2002 and 28 September 2003. The result revealed that OC4 bio-optical algorithm falsely identifies red tide blooms in areas abundance in colored dissolved organic and particulate inorganic matter constituents associated with coastal areas, estuaries and river mouths, whereas red tide index provides improved capability of detecting, predicting and monitoring of these blooms in both clear and turbid waters.
We summarize the activities concerning to the space-borne microwave radiometer (RAD) calibration and validation (Cal/Val) in China. It is important to know in advance the brightness temperature of a given sea surface before external calibrating RAD due to its special characteristic of system. In the paper, we analyse some modeling results on sea surface emissivity and atmospheric transmissivity at different frequencies, and compare the calculated brightness temperatures with those measurements from some air-borne microwave radiometers. We also introduced the whole contents on RAD Val and developed two methods of retrieving sea surface winds. We compared the retrievals of wind speeds to those from NDBC buoys. At last, we introduce some plans of Cal/Val for testing our RAD.
A series of radiocarbon dating from intertidal, subtidal, and inner continental shelf deposits investigated along the west coast of Korea as well as from its offshore sea floor (namely, the eastern Yellow Sea Basin) how (1) the Holocene sea level rise, i.e., the ecstatic sea-level history during the oxygen isotope stage 1, and (2) pre-Holocene sea-level fluctuations during the oxygen isotope stages 2 and 3. Marine geophysical investigations in the Yellow Sea reported a possible development of desert and loses deposits due to dieselization under the cold and dry climate during the Last Glacial Maximum. The Kanweoldo deposit overlain unconformably by the Holocene intertidal deposits, which is mainly exposed along the tidal channels and intertidal flats in the Cheonsu Bay, the west coast of Korea, shows the characteristic cryogenic structure (cryoturbation). Such cryoturbation structure of the Kanweoldo deposit appears to indicate the cold and dry climate under the ecstatic sea-level paleoshoreline standing before and after of the pre-Holocene interstitial period (about 30000 y BP is suggested and its shoreline curve is constructed.

In order to clarify the relation between sea breeze penetration and Planetary Boundary Layer development in southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula, several numerical assessments were carried out using atmospheric numerical model WRF(Weather Research and Forecasting). Compared with onset time of sea breeze at eastern coast area(Uljin), the time at southern coast region(Masan) with complex costal line tend to delay for several hours. The penetration patterns of sea breeze between two coastal regions are some different due to the shape of their coastal line and back ground topography. Intensified valley wind due to high topography of lee side of Uljin can help penetration of sea breeze at early time. So penetration of sea breeze at early time often prevent PBL to develop at Uljin and lower PBL height last for a day time. But because of late penetration of sea breeze at Masna, PBL Height dramatically decrease after 1500LST. The distribution of front genesis function based on the heat and momentum variation are explained obviously the sea breeze penetration patterns and agreed well with the PBL height distribution.

Analysis of high-resolution seismic profiles and sediment data from the southeastern continental shelf of Korea reveals that the late Quaternary deposits consist of a set of lowstand (LST), transgressive (TST), and highstand systems tracts (HST) that corresponds to the sea-level change after the Last Glacial Maximum. LST (Unit I) above the sequence boundary consists of sandy mud or muddy sand deposited during the last glacial period and is confined to the shelf margin and trough region. TST (Unit II) between transgressive surface and maximum flooding surface consists of sandy sediments deposited during the postglacial transgression (15,000-6,000 yr BP). Although TST is widely distributed on the shelf, it is much thinner than LST and HST. On the basis of distribution pattern, TST can be divided into three sub-units: early TST (Unit IIa) on the shelf margin, middle TST (Unit IIb) on the mid-shelf, and late TST (Unit IIc) on the inner shelf, respectively. These are characterized by a backstepping depositional arrangement. HST(Unit III) above the maximum flooding surface is composed of the fine-grained sediments deposited during the last 6000 yrs when sea level was close to the present level and its distribution is restricted to the inner shelf along the coast.
