This thesis is a study about Mai Jue Chan Wei (脈訣闡微) among many medical books by Chen Shi Duo (陳士鐸) who was a famous medical practitioner of China under the early Qing dynasty. Chen Shi Duo (陳士鐸) who is from, Shaoxing (紹興), Zhejiang (浙江) had his pen-name as Jing Zhi (敬之) and also was called as Zhu Hua Zi (朱華子) or Lian Gong (蓮公) under pseudonym of Yuan Gong (遠公). He was a medical practitioner under the early Qing dynasty in China and the date of birth and death was not for sure nor was written in the history book.
The paper describes the practice and purpose of the medical missionaries research on the traditional Chinese drugs(中藥). Searches were made using the journal of the China Medical Missionary Association. The China Medical Missionary Association established the committee of the Chinese Materia Medica in 1890. This committee aimed to research on the traditional Chinese drugs. Then why did the medical missionaries study traditional Chinese drugs? This is because the western drugs(西洋藥)was not easy to acquire, especially in land areas. Also, some western drugs have poor quality and expensive. Therefore they need to understand that Chinese drugs will help in the production of the western drugs. But from around 1920, the main purpose of the research was changed. The scientific and systematic investigation on the Chinese medicine itself became more important. And this change partly influenced that medical missionaries' views on traditional Chinese drugs.
Before the current western medicine was spreaded out in the world as the main stream, each country had treated diseases with the medicine of their own and the traditional medical books, which are so characteristic, are handed down. Considering the earnest assignment to do in Korean medical of this age and one of the tendencies of medical circles in the world is putting together the current medicine with the traditional medicine, the production and spread of the classification system for the technical books which is contained the characteristic of traditional chinese medicine, the present condition of modern chinese medicine, and the future of it, must be settled without delay. The classification system for oriental medicine section developed in the range of the simple system before the time of flowering, since then the western medicine had grew as the main current in medicine in Korea. But until now the rational and realistic classification system based on the changeable time isn't be established, so setting up one of the classification systems for medicine section, it is classified according to the principle of classification system for medicine section. Hereupon, the result was made after researching the changes of modern classification system for korean and studying on the changes of classification system for oriental medicine section of the Korean decimal classification.
Objectives : The terms, CAM and Integrative Medicine, have been often used to conceptualize relation between TKM and western medicine in Korea. But both terms often lead to confusion since the backgrounds of those were not being properly discussed. Methods : We researched the concepts of CAM and Integrative Medicine through the changes in definitions and research methods. Results : Although modern medical verification of CAM showed some results through scientific researches, there existed certain limitations. The term Integrative Medicine newly emerged for this reason. The rise of the new term came to criticize existing research methodologies such as RCTs or SRs. However in Korea, Integrative Medicine has often been misunderstood as a unification of two different medical systems. Conclusions : Thus, in future research of relationship between TKM and western medicine, debates on plausibility & philosophical background of TKM, and research methodology are indispensable.
This writing makes summarizing the history of traditional pharmacology its objective, and it gives a simple list of the pharmacological theories of various schools. In order to form the basic principles on the history of traditional pharmacology, the following were introduced: 1) the primitive formation of pharmacological theories before the Jin-Han times, 2) the earnest formation during the Jin-Han times 3) the systematic organization of pharmacological theories during the WiJinNamBukJo and Su-Tang times, 4) the development of pharmacological interpretation during the SongGeumWon times, 5) the maturity of pharmacological theories from MyungChung up until the modern times. 6) the new research trend from the modern times to this day.
Today, knowledge itself has become a resource which must be protected by the pertinent community of its contributors and users, from being manipulated or distorted by third-party players. The preservation of knowledge in relationship to the cultural context of its origins, has been recognized by international organizations intent on maintaining authentic voice and perspective. Globally, the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) organizes the annual IGC (Intergovernmental Committee) meeting to address various issues associated with each country's utilization of intellectual and bio source property. Korean Medicine is the official name for the traditional medicine that has been inherited from the cultures of the Korean Peninsula. It is one of the four practices of East Asian Medicine including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) from China, Kampo Medicine of Japan, and Sino-Vietnamese Medicine in Vietnam. As a cultural treasure representing centuries of evolving knowledge, Korean Medicine is protected under intellectual property rights afforded by WIPO, and must be understood in relationship to, and distinct from, TCM. It is understood that China has a strong political purpose to claim all the traditional medicines of the East Asian region under the name of TCM, including Korean Medicine. In fact TCM was authorized as the representative name for all East Asian medicine by decisions made by the ISO (International Standard Organization) in 2015. This paper proposes a pilot study on how to protect the intellectual property of Korean Medicine from efforts by China to claim it under the umbrella of TCM. Using the Uibang Yuchui (醫方類聚, Classified Collection of Medical Formulas) this paper suggests establishing a Database of UBYC, which was published in 1477 by the Joseon Korea government. UBYC was the reorganized version of contemporary East Asian medical sources, and has already hundreds of year's rich indigenous and culturally specific medical history of Korea, from which Korean Medicine has been built.

Objectives : With Taoist medicine, there is a way of improving one's health by adopting a unique discipline called 'Five viscera spirit meditation'. The method was reintroduced in traditional Korean medicine when it was finalized. The viscera figures in the Uibang-yuchwi is one of the good examples in which the photos influenced by the five viscera spirit meditation appeared in medical literature. This research is aimed to study the process and the result of how medical knowledge influenced the formation of the five viscera spirit meditation, an important health theory of Taoist medicine, and how Korean medicine was affected by Taoist medicine. Methods : We will compare and study the information included in the following publications: the Taipingjing from the Dong-Han Period when the concepts of five viscera spirit were conceived; the huangtingjing from the Wei-Jin-Nan-Bei-Chao Period when the five viscera spirit meditation was finalized; the Yuanshenjing, the Yuzhoujing and the Buxietu based on Taoist medicine; and the Uibang-yuchwi based on traditional Korean medicine. Results & Conclusions : SThe medical knowledge at the initial stage made its way into Taoist medicine, forming the foundation of health theories and contributing to the creation of the five viscera spirit meditation. After some exchanges of medical knowledge and practices between Taoist medicine and other existing medicines, the five viscera spirit meditation reappeared in medical literature in the form of drawings and was used to cure diseases.
Traditional pharmacological theory was not built in a day. It had been changing in the past, still changing in the present day and will be changing in the future. The transition was made by criticism, modification and complements through countless debates. Therefore, we can learn the systematic stream of traditional pharmacology and logical construction and make an estimate of the changes in the future, by looking at the debates and the transition of pharmacological theory.
Objectives : Nomenclature for medical terminology is the most important point in traditional medical standardization. For example, standard Romanized nomenclature for acupuncture points, herbal medicines, prescriptions and classic books have been achieaved. However, studies on standard Romanized nomenclature for persons who was involved in traditional medicine are rare. Methods : Following up all articles in Journal of Korean Medical Classics[J. KMC], which have Romanized name for persons and analyzing problems of those. Results : There were several methods to write in Romanized character even to an unique and replaceable name. Conclusions : Romanized nomenclature for persons' name who were involved in traditional medicine as a terminology must have unique expression. So we suggest that authors to write articles have to use unique Romanized nomenclature for persons who were involved in traditional medicine and persons had lived in a certain country should be written in Romanized characters with their own languages.
