Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes severe pulmonary disease in infants, young children, and the elderly. Formalin inactivated RSV (FI-RSV) vaccine trials failed due to vaccine enhanced respiratory disease, but the underlying immune mechanisms remain not fully understood. In this study, we have used wild type C57BL/6 and CD4 knockout (CD4KO) mouse models to better understand the roles of the CD4 T cells and cellular mechanisms responsible for enhanced respiratory disease after FI-RSV vaccination and RSV infection. Less eosinophil infiltration and lower pro-inflammatory cytokine production were observed in FI-RSV vaccinated CD4KO mice after RSV infection compared to FI-RSV vaccinated C57BL/6 mice. NK cells and cytokine-producing CD8 T cells were recruited at high levels in the airways of CD4KO mice, correlating with reduced respiratory disease. Depletion studies provided evidence that virus control was primarily mediated by NK cells whereas CD8 T cells contributed to IFN-γ production and less eosinophilic lung inflammation. This study demonstrated the differential roles of effector CD4 and CD8 T cells as well as NK cells, in networking with other inflammatory infiltrates in RSV disease in immune competent and CD4-deficient condition.

This paper introduces AmericaView, a consortium for promoting remote sensing education, research and applications. As a case study, GeorgiaView is described in more detail. The AmericaView Consortium and StateView Consortia are good examples of collaboration for broadening the horizon of remote sensing applications in South Korea. Furthermore, the AmericaView example represents an opportunity for building a stepping stone to international collaboration.

Gene identification is at the center of genomic studies. Although the first phase of the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) project has been claimed to be complete, the annotation of the functional elements is far from being so. Computational methods in gene identification continue to play important roles in this area and other relevant issues. So far, a lot of work has been performed on this area, and a plethora of computational methods and avenues have been developed. Many review papers have summarized these methods and other related work. However, most of them focus on the methodologies from a particular aspect or perspective. Different from these existing bodies of research, this paper aims to comprehensively summarize the mainstream computational methods in gene identification and tries to provide a short but concise technical reference for future studies. Moreover, this review sheds light on the emerging trends and cutting-edge techniques that are believed to be capable of leading the research on this field in the future.

A fuzzy control system typically requires“tuning,”or adjuctment of the parameters defining its linguistic variables. Automating this process amounts to applying a second“metacontrol”layer to drive the controller and plant to desired performance levels. Current methods of automated tuning rely on a single crisp numeric functional to evaluate control system performance. A generalization of Box's complex algorithm allows more realistic tuning based on lexicographic aggregation of multiple ordinal scales of performance, such as effectiveness and efficiency. The method is presented and illustrated using a simple inverted pendulum control system.

This study investigated school mathematics curriculum of the State of Georgia in the United States focused on the 'number and operation' and 'algebra' domain. On the basis of its understanding, this domain was compared and analyzed with school mathematics curriculum of Korea. In doing so, this study explored its plans and procedures and established a frame of comparison for the curriculums between the two countries. The most noticeable difference between the former and the new curriculum in mathematics for Georgia schools is the use of performance standards. A performance standard has four components: a content standard, illustrative tasks, examples of student work, and a commentary for teachers. This study focuses on the content standard and according to the results of the present study, Korea focuses on the formal and systematic mathematical knowledge on the basis of sound understanding of certain mathematical terms or concepts. On the other hand, the State of Georgia curriculum tends to deal with the content which can be understood more intuitively, flexibly, and naturally through the experience, aquisition, and furthermore interpretation based on the concrete manipulation and technological devices.

Sign patterns of idempotent matrices, especially symmetric idempotent matrices, are investigated. A number of fundamental results are given and various constructions are presented. The sign patterns of symmetric idempotent matrices through order 5 are determined. Some open questions are also given.
