  • Climate change and large-scale human interference increase flow instability due to changes in watershed flow and sediment transport patterns. There are local problems in solving problems related to sediments, namely the existence of specific problems at specific sites or areas, and the resolution of these problems is limited to short-term and regional, resulting in other temporal and spatial influences and impacts. Therefore, this study intends to introduce and propose a conceptual framework for comprehensive sediment management in terms of watershed scale for solving problems related to sediments in watersheds. In the watershed scale, comprehensive sediment management should be done, to do this, a comprehensive understanding of the movements of sediments accompanied by cooperation with science-policy-operation-residents should be given priority.

  • There are conflicting views for the polymerization process of human UDP-glucose dehydrogenase (UGDH) and no clear evidence has been reported yet. Based on crystal coordinates for Streptococcus pyogenes UGDH, we made double mutant A222Q/S233G. The double mutagenesis had no effects on expression, stability, and secondary structure. Interestingly, A222Q/S233G was a dimeric form and showed an UGDH activity, although it showed increased $K_m$ values for substrates. These results suggest that Ala222 and Ser233 play an important role in maintaining the hexameric structure and the reduced binding affinities for substrates are attributable to its altered subunit communication although quaternary structure may not be critical for catalysis.

  • N-methyl, N-butyl and N,N-dibutyl chitosan derivatives were prepared by Schiff's base formation and hydrogenation in aqueous media. Furthermore quaternization of the chitosan derivatives was performed in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone using methyl iodide to obtain water soluble cationic polyelectrolytes. It was confirmed that O-alkylation was occured as well as selective N-alkylation in these reactions. Chitosan and chitosan derivatives with quaternary ammonium iodide showed high flocculation power as the cationic flocculant. When tested on paper mill waste water, they showed high flocculation power, independing of pH range. The flocculation power was increased as the N-alkyl chain length was increased. Among them, N-butyl dimethyl chitosan ammonium iodide showed better flocculation power than chitosan. But, N,N-dibutyl-N-methyl chitosan ammonium iodide showed less flocculation powre than chitosan itself.

  • Natural aggregate is an essential resource for human activities, closely related to construction. The aggregate demand has been increasing annually, and due to the nature of the resource, it is difficult to procure from distant locations. This study identifies the distribution and characteristics of aggregate-bearing areas as part of a municipal-level aggregate resource survey conducted in Nonsan City, Korea, in 2023. Nonsan City is located approximately 35 km straight distance from the Geum River estuary and lies at the passageway of the main stream of the Geum River. The topography of Nonsan City features eastern mountainous areas and western plains, creating an east-high-west-low geomorphic setting, with 33 streams distributed across the city, including tributaries of the Geum River like Nonsan Stream, Noseong Stream, and Ganggyeong Stream. All streams originate from the highlands in the north and east, converge with Nonsan Stream, and then join the west bank of the main stream of the Geum River at the western boundary of Nonsan City. Drilling core results show shallow depths in the highlands to the north and east, deepening towards the west, reaching a maximum depth of 25 m near the main stream of the Geum River. The total reserve of land aggregates is calculated to be 246,789,000 m3, with a developable amount of 172,750,000 m3. The total reserve of river aggregates is 5,236,000 m3, with a developable amount of 3,765,000 m3. The distribution of aggregates varies according to the geomorphic, geologic, and development pattern of the river system. Reserves are scarce in mountainous areas but are abundant in regions with rivers and wide alluvial plains, although reserves appear at depths greater than 4m. The distribution of aggregate resources in Nonsan City is influenced by stream activities and sea level changes, with the tidal range of the Yellow Sea acting as an unfavorable condition for the preservation of aggregate resources.

  • On the ArcGIS 9.2 program in Gyeongsangbug-Do and Daegu areas, distribution ratios of rock types and geologic ages were obtained from the 1 : 250,000 scaled digital geologic and geomorphic maps. The obtained distribution ratios here will be used the geologic information data for industrialization and development planning of rock resources. The Gyeongsangbug-Do area consists of 86 rock types that can be divided into 10 large groups in geologic age. Their geologic distribution ratios show the decreasing in the order of Cretaceous, Precambrian, Jurassic, Quaternary, Age-unknown and Tertiary, all of which occupy the prevailing ratio of 96.30% in the area. Of which, sixteen rock types are somewhat dominant ones (64.04%). They are of Precambrian Yulri group and granite gneiss of the Yeongnam metamorphic complex and biotite gneiss of the Sobaegsan metamorphic complex, Age-unknown granite, Jurassic granite, Cretaceous Gasongdong and Dogyedong formations of the Yeongyang sub-basin, Nagdong and Chunsan formations and intermediate-basic volcanics of Euiseong sub-basin, Jinju and Jindong formations and andesite-andesitic tuff of Milyang sub-basin, and hornblende granite, and Quaternary alluvium. They show relatively narrow ranges of 2.07-6.53% in geologic distribution in exception of Jurassic granite showing 13.14%. And the rest 70 rock types appear to very narrow range between 0.01 and 1.94 %. On the other hand, twelve rock types are developed in the Daegu area. Their geologic ages appear to be classified into Cretaceous and Quaternary occupying 86.05% and 11.39%, respectively. Seven rock types take possession of 94.04% among the all rocks. The major rock types are Jinju formation of the Sindong group, Chilgog, Haman and Jindong formations of the Hayang group, andesite and andesitic tuff, hornblende granite and Quaternary alluvium. With exception of andesite and andesitic tuff of 37.40%, the types show slightly wide range of 3.25-17.39%, which apparently differ trends from that of Gyeongsangbug-Do area. And the rest of rock types have narrow ranges of 0.22-1.81% in the Daegu area.

  • In order to outline the kinematics and movement history of a new Quaternary fault, Jingwan Fault in Dangjin, West Korea, we analyzed the geometry of the fault zone composed of a few gouge zones, and made ESR dating for fault gouge materials. The $N55^{\circ}E$ striking Jingwan Fault is a normal fault and exhibits a gradual change in dip (gentle in the lower part, steep in the upper part), indicating a listric fault. As for the fault gouge zone, its thickness varies and reaches 2~3 cm in the lower part or between basement rocks, and 20~30 cm in the middle-upper part or between the basement and Quaternary deposit. It is observed in the latter case that more than three gouge zones develop with different colors, and branch out and re-merge, or they are partly superimposed, indicating different movement episodes. The cumulative displacement is estimated to be about 10 m using the geological cross-sections, from which it is inferred that the total length of fault may be about 2.5 km on the basis of the empirical relation between cumulative displacement and fault length. Therefore, a more study would be needed to verify the entire fault length. The results of ESR dating for three gouge samples at different spots along the fault yields ages of $651{\pm}47$, $649{\pm}96$, and $436{\pm}66ka$, indicating at least two movement episodes. Slickenlines observed on the fault planes indicate a pure dip slip (normal faulting), which suggests that the ENE-WSW trending Jingwan Fault was presumably moved under a NNW-SSE extensional environment.

  • In Korea, many open-air upper palaeolithic sites are located at the river valley, particularly exposed in gently rotting terrain along the river course. They are situated at an altitude less trail 30 m above present river bottom, and covered with the blankets of slope deposits of several meters in thickness. The purpose of this research is to eluridate depositional and vegetational environment of the alluvial upper palaeolithic Jangheung-ri sites on the basis of analytical properties of grain size population, chronology, palynology, soil chemistry and clay mineralogy and magnetic susceptibility of the Jangheung-ri Quaternary formations. The lithostratograpy of Jangheung-ri sit is subdivided into 3 layers based on the depositional sequence and radiocarbon ages. From bottom to top, they are composed of slope deposits with lower paleosol layers, young fluvial sand and gravel with backswamp organic muds, and upper paleosol layers. The upper paleosol was formed under rather dry climatic condition between each flooding period. Dessication cracks were prevalent in the soil solum which was filled with secondarily minuted fragments due to pedogenetic process. The soil structure shows typical braided-typed cracks in the root part of cracking texture, and more diversified pattern of crackings downward. The young fluvial sand gravel were formed by rather perennial streams after LGM. The main part of organic muds was particularly formed after 15Ka. Local backswamp were flourished with organic muds and graded suspension materials in the flooding muds were intermittently accumulated in the organic muds until ca. 11Ka. This episode was associated with migration of Nam River toward present course. Organic muds were formed in backswamp or local pond. Abies/Picea-Betula with Ranunculaceae, Compositae, Cyperaceae were prevalent. This period is characterized with B$\Phi$lling, Older Dryas, Allerod, and Younger Dryas (MIS-1). Stone artefacts were found in the lower paleosol layers formed as old as 18Ka-22Ka. Based on the artefacts and landscape settings of the Jangheung-ri site, it is presumed that settlement grounds of old people were buried by frequent floodings of old Nam River, the river-beds of which were heavily fluctuated laterally and river-bed erosions were activated from south to north in Jangheung-ri site until the terminal of LGM9ca 17Ka).

  • To understand human activity in the past, the information about past environmental change including geomorphological and climatic conditions is essential and this can be traced by using age dating and geochemical analysis of sediments from the prehistoric sites. The sedimentary sequence of Seokgwan-dong Paleolithic Site located in Seoul was 5m long unconsolidated sediments and consists of lower part bedrock weathering sediments, slope deposits and upper-part fluvial deposits. In this study, upper part sediments were used to reconstruct past environmental change through age dating and various physical and chemical analyses including grain size, magnetic susceptibility and mineral and elements. The fluvial sediments can be divided into 4 units including three organic layers. Grain size analysis results showed that the sediments were very poorly sorted with fining upward features. Magnetic susceptibility was relatively high in the organic layers, indicating environmental changes causing mineral composition change at that times. The mineral and major element composition are similar to Jurassic biotite granite which mainly consists of quartz, K-feldspar, biotite and muscovite. The radiocarbon age of $14,240{\pm}80yr$ BP was obtained from the lower most organic layer of Unit III(O), suggesting that the fluvial sediments formed at least from the early stage of deglacial period after the end of Last Glacial Maximum. Subsequent wet and warm climates and resultant fluvial process including slope sedimentation during the Holocene may have been responsible for the sedimentary sequence in Seokgwan-dong paleolithic site and surrounding area. The observed organic layers suggests frequent wetland occurrence combined with natural levee changes in this area.

  • River terraces of glacial and interglacial periods are most developed in the Ungcheon River, midwestern coastal region of south Korea. Among these terraces, interglacial river terraces correspond to the thalassostatic terraces of eastern coastal region of Korea. Thus the former shoreline altitudes of the coastal region around Ungcheon River can be estimated by using relative heights of these interglacial thalassostatic terraces of Ungcheon River The former shoreline altitudes estimated from interglacial thalassostatic terraces of Ungcheon River are 80m, 50${\sim}$60m, 40${\sim}$45m, 30m, 25m(?), 15${\sim}$20m, and 10m. These estimates are almost identical with those of Quaternary sea levels of eastern coastal region. Among the above estimates of Ungcheon River, the former shoreline altituded of 15~20m and 10m correspond to the ancient sea levels of $\pm$18m and $\pm$10m of eastern coastal region which were injudged as the last interglacial culmination period and late warmer period of the last interglacia(5e and 5a substages of oxygen isotope stage), respectively. Therefore there is a possibility that the rest of the above former shoreline altitudes of the coastal region aroune Jngcheon River also correspond to those of eastern coastal region. On the basis of the above possibility it can be proposed that the eastern and western coastal region of Korean Peninsula have undergone tectonic uplift of equall amount since the middle Quaternary Period.
