  • Recently, a first-principles study led to a prediction that quaternary Heusler compounds, CoFeCrZ (Z = Ga, Ge) are excellent half-metallic ferromagnets. In this study, we investigate the electronic and the magnetic properties at the (001) surfaces of CoFeCrGa and CoFeCrGe by means of the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method within generalized gradient approximation. We considered two types of surface termination: CoFe-terminated and CrZ-terminated surfaces, Z being either Ga or Ge. From the calculated total magnetic moments and the local density of states, we found that half-metallicity is not preserved for all the surfaces. But the calculated atomic density of states showed that CrGa-terminated surface of the CoFeCrGa is almost half-metallic. The magnetic moment of the Co, Fe, or Cr atoms at the surface or subsurface layers in each system had very different values.

  • Inorganic geochemical and mineralogical analyses from the trench sediments of the Hwayang wetland were carried out to verify the wet/dry conditions during 6000 - 5000 yr BP and abnormal event of 6300 yr BP of Korean west coast. Lithostratigraphy, mineralogy and major element concentrations of the sediments of the trench indicate that during 6000 - 5000 yr BP, a wet/dry conditions might be repeated at an interval of 200 years. Carbonate minerals precipitated with the decrease of water depth in the lake or wetland after about 6000 yr BP. On the other hand, the sediments coarser in mean grain size and larger in standard deviation were corresponded with periods of 6300 yr BP and 6230 yr BP. Especially, such a feature of grain size distribution of 6300 yr BP appears in other wetlands situated in the west coast, e.g., Hwangsan wetland and Cheollipo coastal wetland. During the period, the coarse sediments seem to have been delivered by a high energy like storming.

  • For a case study of suspected paraquat intoxication, we developed a simple and rapid method of $^1H$ qNMR to determine the mili-molar amount of paraquat in postmortem blood samples. There were no interfering signals from endogenous compounds in the chemical shift of paraquat and diquat (internal standard). The amount of sample used ranged from 0.25 mM to 10.0 mM. Diquat, which has similar physicochemical properties with paraquat, was chosen as an internal standard. The NMR experimental conditions, relaxation delay time and CPMG spin-echo pulse sequence were optimized. The developed method was validated in terms of specificity, accuracy, precision, matrix effect, recovery, limit of detection (LOD), and low limit of quantification (LLOQ). The proposed qNMR method provided a simple and rapid assay for the identification and quantification of the quaternary ammonium herbicide, "paraquat" in postmortem blood samples. This method was tested by using the blood from the heart of a man who was intoxicated with paraquat. In this particular case, the level of paraquat was 1.07 mM in the blood. For the determination of quaternary ammonium herbicides, qNMR could also be used to provide a better understanding of the currently available techniques.

  • The first well-preserved an immature fossil skeleton of Pleistocene age in South Korea was found at the quarry of Hungsu cave which consists of the Turubong Cave Complex, Ch'ongwon, Korea. This fossil remain has been designated as "Hungsu Cave Child". Associated with the individual were a small number of stone artifacts. While a precise date for this site is not available yet, the presence of fauna would suggest a warm period of an Upper Pleistocene date. Metric and non-metric methods are used for the description of the Hungsu child's skeleton. This fossil has been assigned a developmental age of 5 years, but can be considered to be the range of 4 to 6 years. Estimated cranial capacity ranged from 1,260 to 1,300 CC and the estimated stature from 110 to 120cm. The Hungsu child is differentiated by the superiority in size of skull, cranial length and height, and, most significantly, its greater parietal arc. On the basis of comparison of the total cranical characteristics of Hungsu child and other samples including hominid fossils and modern man of East Asia, it is assumed that Hungsu child can currently, be classified as "an anatomically modern man or anatomically Homo sapiens". • Thin films of buckminsterfullerene($C_{60}$) formed by solution drop casting on Pt foil electrode surfaces were studied by cyclic voltammetry(CV) in acetonitrile(MeCN) containing quaternary ammonium or alkali-metal salts as supporting electrolyte. The electrochemical behaviors of $C_{60}$ films are found to be strongly dependent on the nature of the supporting electrolytes, especially with tetrabutyl ammonium perchlorate (TBAP, $NBu_4ClO_4$), and tetrabutyl ammonium tetrafluoroborate ($TBABF_4$, $NBu_4BF_4$). Reasonably stable films are formed into which electrons can be injected. The interaction of $C_{60}$ film with the quaternary ammonium cation may produce the fulleride salts $(TBA^+)(C{_{60}}^-)$ and $(TBA^+)_2(C{_{60}}^{2-})$. The bulk electroreduction with a controlled potential to generate the soluble $C{_{60}}^{3-}$ anions(dark red-brown color) is followed by electrooxidative deposition to produce a neutral $C_{60}$ film on the surface. The peak currents($I_{pc}$ and $I_{pa}$) of these thin film were dramatically decreased with repetitive potential scanning. These results could be explained by the adsorption-desorption phenomena and ion pairing interaction of reduced species($C{_{60}}^-$, and $C{_{60}}^{2-}$) onto the electrode surface. The peak current changes and peak potential shifts of the thin $C_{60}$ film in cyclic voltammograms formed from solution were observed by varying scan rates.

  • Using the phytogram system, this study monitored hourly environmental factors(climate and soil), and radial growths and cambium activities of conifers in Worak mountain for 28 months from May 1996 to October 1998 to examine the influences of climatic factors on tree growths/carnbium activities of conifers in Worak Mountain, Korea. The phytogram system first puts a fine electrode into cambial zone. This device can automatically record environmental factors and cambium electrochemistry(hydration and proton levels). Dendrometers are attached to the phytogram for monitoring seasonal dynamics of cambial growth. We compared the results of radial growth by species and by diameter class. The growth decreased in order of Larix leptolepis, Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida. Pre-monsoon growths were fast and May-June moisture regime was the most critical for all species. In the middle of September, radial growths were finished. The proton level and stem diameter reached the minimum at 4 p.m. On the other hand, the hydration level reached the maximum at 4 p.m. This diurnal change resulted from transpiration and the release of water from phloem storage to sapwood through xylem stream.

  • A simulation model was used to examine the effects of climate variation on the tree-ring structure of Larix leptolepis trees growing at a plantation plot in Worak National Park in central Korea. The model uses mathematical equations to simulate processes affecting cell(tracheid) size variations for individual rings using daily precipitation and temperature measurements. Limiting conditions are estimated from temperature, day length and a calculated water balance. The results indicate that the seasonal growth is mostly limited by the soil moisture content and precipitation income during April and May. The April-May temperature also inversely influences the growth by increasing water losses from soil. The global climate-change scenario which includes regional warming(increasing temperature in spring-summer periods) appears to decrease the duration of optimal growths. Consequently, the model estimated that Larix leptolepis would lose the total production of xylem by 25%.

  • Only trace amounts of hydroxide ion can be extracted from aqueous phase into organic phase by Tetra-n-Butyl Ammonium Chloride(TBAC). Addition of small amounts of primary alcohols, particularly certain dials, dramatically changes the behavior of Phase Transfer Catalysis systems, and surprising amounts of base can be found in the organic phase. Quantitative measurements were carried out for the extraction amounts of primary alkoxides, secondary alkoxides, and diol anions into organic phase. On the other hand, the selectivity constants for extraction of primary alcohols and benzylalcohol could be separated to the equilibrium constants of the ion pairs such as $Q^+RO^-$ and $Q^+Cl^-$ in the aqueous and organic phases and this distribution coefficients between phases on anions respectively. In a word, the colligated property for the selectivity of $Q^+RO^-$ in which $Q^+$ is quaternary cation and $RO^-$ alkoxide ion could be discussed in more detail by using of the corresponding free energies to the various constants mentioned.
