  • The time-spatial distributional changes of fourteen warmth-tolerant plants have reconstructed by the use of the historical records of the Chosun Dynasty on the periods of 1454, 1531, 1660, 1760, 1842∼45, 1864, 1907 and 1931. Nine types of geographical distribution, and four types of temporal distribution are, respectively, recognised from fourteen warmth-tolerant plants. The most widely distributed species which occur at more than 100 counties was the persimmon. Species occurred more than 50 counties include the large bamboo, small bamboo and pomegranate. Tea plant and ramie are also commonly found species at more than 30 counties. Past geographical distribution of warmth-tolerant plants seems to be the result of both natural and anthropogenic environments.

  • The Pollen analyses and the $^{14}C$-dating of the sediments of Moojechi bog were performed in order to study the vegetation history and the environmental changes of the southeasterm montane zone of Korea. These results show that the local pollen assemblage of the montane zone changed from lower upward cool-temperate northern/altimontane forest(MI) into cool-temperate central/montane forest(M II a) and cool-temperate souther $n_montane forest(M II b). Furthermore, In the case of the present cool temperature deciduous broad-leaved forests, its distribution would begin to be expanded from 8,000yr B.P., and its regional differentiation would be developed from 6,700yr B.P..P.

  • Separation of fructose and glucose was performed using emulsion liquid membranes with a mixture of an organoboronic acid and a quaternary ammonium salt as a carrier in a batch reactor. In order to find a carrier and an optimal experimental condition suitable to the sugar separation, extraction of each sugar was carried out independently. The effect of various experimental variables, such as initial concentration of sugar in the feed phase, type of organoboronic acids, and w/o ratio, on the sugar separation was investigated, and the concentrations of sugars in each aqueous phase were analyzed. The ratio of degree of extraction of fructose to that of glucose was very high, but the concentration of fructose in the receiving phase was not too high. Therefore, a stronger stripping agent in the receiving phase was required for development of a practical ELM system suitable to the sugar separation.

  • Although clay can sorb significant amounts of inorganic contaminants from soils and wastewater, the hydration of exchangeable cations in clay minerals makes it hydrophilic at the clay mineral surfaces and interlayers. Thus, natural clays are often ineffective in complexing and stabilizing toxic organic contaminants in soils and groundwater environment. But, substituting these hydrated cations with cationic surfactant such as QAC(Quaternary ammonium Compound) can change the natural clay from hydrophilic to hydropobic. Furthermore functionalized organoclay can act as a powerful dual function sorbent for both toxic metals and organic compounds. It also can be used as landfill clay liners, slurry walls, nano-composite materials, petroleum tank farms, waste treatment, and filter systems. To use this modified clay minerals effectively, it is required to understand the fundamental chemistry of organoclay, synthetic procedures, its engineering application, bioavailability of sorbed ion-clay complex, and potential risk of organoclay. In this review, we investigate the use, application and historical background of the organoclay in remediation technology. The state-of-the-art of organoclay research is also discussed. Finally, we suggest some future implications of organoclay in environmental research.

  • Long term observational analysis by climatologists has confirmedthat the global warming is no longer a topic of debate among scientists andpolicy makers. According to the report of IPCC-2001 (Intergovernmental Panelon Climate Change), the global mean surface air temperature is increasinggradually. The reported increase of mean temperature is by 0.6 degree in the end of twentieth century. This could represent severe threat for propertylosses especially due to increase in the number of extreme weather arising out of global warming. period of model integration from 2001 to 2100 using output of ECHAM4/HOPE-G of Max Planet Institute of Meteorology (MPI) for IPCC SRES (Special Report on Emission Scenarios). The main results of this study indicate increase of surface air temperature by 6.20C and precipitation by 2.6% over Korea in the end of 21st century. Simulation results also show that there is increase in daily maximum and minimum temperatures while decrease in diurnal temperature range (DTR). DTR changes are diminished mainly due to relatively rapid increase of daily minimum temperature than that of daily maximumtemperature. It has been observed that increase in precipitation amount anddecrease in the number of rainy days lead to increase of pre precipitationintensity.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the species and to date the woods used in the Keunjung-jeon Hall, main building of the Kyungbok palace in Seoul. Samples (144) were divided into two parts, pillars (52) and other wood materials (92). Only two species were identified. They were Abies holophylla Max. and Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.Eleven among 20 Pyungju (outer pillars) were Abies holophylla, and 9 were Pinus densiflora. Seven among 12 Naejinkoju (inner pillars) were Abies holophylla, and 5 were Pinus densiflora. Three among 4 Gwikoju (inner corner pillars) were Abies holophylla, and one was Pinus densiflora. In the other wood materials, only 2 of 92 were Abies holophylla, and the others were Pinus densiflora. Tree-ring dating proved that this building was reconstructed during late 1860s. It also revealed that the old woods cut in the 17th century were reused.

  • A sedimentation study of the Cheonripo intertidal beach sands and its related coastal dune sands, Cheonripo, Seosan Gun, Choongcheong Namdo, Korea has been carried out based on a series of several summer time field surveys. Each subenvironment in the Cheonripo coastal zone, that is, intertidal sand beach and coastal sand dune, could be differenciated in terms of textural parameters. The coastal dune sands are finer than the intertidal beach sands in mean grain size, and the sorting of dune sands is relatively poorer than that of intertidal beach sands. However, the skewness of intertidal beach and dune sands is commonly positive. Such textural parameters are characteristically differentiated on scatter diagrams. A series of megaripple bedform observations for 6 tidal cycle periods(August 13, 14 and 15, 1990) are interpreted to find out migration pattern of bedforms and its related sand migration. Such migration natures are shown on the tables and figures.

  • $^{14}C$ age dating by AMS (accelerator mass spectrometry) technique was performed on twenty five small sized fossil shells and one peat taken from the sixteen piston cores in the southern and southeastern Korean Sea. AMS technique is available to date only a few milligram of amorphous carbons compare than conventional dating technique. It is described in detail of sample pre-treatment and experimental, and applied to the reconstruction of the sea level changes since the late Pleistocene in the Korean Sea. Dated age ranges from 520$\pm$100 to older than 33,500 years. Sedimentary facies in the study area represents a different environmental set which is affected by sea level fluctuation since the late Pleistocene.

  • This study reports the fabrication of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) containing two kinds of functional groups: i) trimethylphosphite (TMP) and ii) trimethylamine (TMA). We carried out the synthesis of polymers to enhance thermal stability and ion conductivity. The alternative polymer was prepared using 2,2-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)propane and decafluorobiphenyl. The membrane was fabricated by solution casting method. The thermal stability of membranes was examined by TGA. The physiochemical properties of membranes were also investigated in terms of water uptake, swelling ratio, ion exchange capacity, and ion conductivity. The hydroxide ion conductivity of the membranes reached about 20.2 mS/cm for quaternary ammonium poly(arylene ether) (QA-PAE) containing TMA moiety and 5.1 mS/cm for quaternary phosphonium PAE (QP-PAE) containing TMP moiety at $90^{\circ}C$.
