  • This study was carried out to explore the accuracy of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for the prediction of chemical and fermentation parameters of whole crop winter rye silages. A representative population of 216 fresh winter rye silages was used as database for studying the possibilities of NIRS to predict chemical composition and fermentation parameters. Samples of silage were scanned at 1 nm intervals over the wavelength range 680~2,500 nm and the optical data recorded as log 1/Reflectance (log 1/R) and scanned in fresh condition. NIRS calibrations were developed by means of partial least-squares (PLS) regression. NIRS analysis of fresh winter rye silages provided accurate predictions of moisture, acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), crude protein (CP) and pH as well as lactic acid content with correlation coefficients of cross-validation ($R^2cv$) of 0.96, 0.86, 0.79, 0.85, 0.82 and 0.78 respectively and standard error of cross-validation (SECV) of 1.89, 2.02, 2.79, 1.14, 1.47 and 0.46 % DM respectively. Results of this experiment showed the possibility of NIRS method to predict the chemical parameters of winter rye silages as routine analysis method in feeding value evaluation and for farmer advice.

  • In order to estimate mean wind speed in the Gwangyang-Myodo Region, the probability distribution model of extreme values has been used in the statistical analysis of joint distribution probability of daily maximum wind speed and corresponding direction in this paper. For this purpose frequency of daily maximum records at respective stations is inquired into and sample of largest yearly wind speed of sixteen compass direction and non-direction is extracted from daily data of maximum wind speed and appropriate direction of the meteorological observing stations nearby the bridge construction site. These extreme speed records are applied to Gumbel and Weibull distribution model and parameters are estimated through method of moment and method of least squares etc. And also, distribution and parameters are inquired into whether it is fitted through the probability plot correlation coefficient examination. From fitted parameters the largest yearly wind speed of sixteen compass direction and non-direction is extrapolated taking into account factors regarding sample size of data and distance from the bridge construction site according to the appropriate stations.

  • In aerospace structural design, the position of lightening hole is often required to be optimized from the initial design in order to avoid an excessive stress concentration. To remodel the updated configuration in optimization procedure, re-meshing procedure is conventionally adopted. However, this approach is time-consuming, and has limitations especially in handling hexahedral or quadrilateral meshes, which are preferred because of their good numerical performances. To attenuate these disadvantages, new optimization scheme is proposed by combining the MLS(Moving Least Squares) based overset method and the genetic algorithm in this work. To test the validity of the proposed optimization scheme, optimizations of positions of lightening holes in 2D structures have been carried out.

  • Least squares (LS) regression is a classic method for regression that is optimal under assumptions of regression and usual observations. However, the presence of unusual data in the LS method leads to seriously distorted estimates. Therefore, various robust estimation methods are proposed to circumvent the limitations of traditional LS regression. Among these, there are M-estimators based on maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), L-estimators based on linear combinations of order statistics and R-estimators based on a linear combinations of the ordered residuals. In this paper, robust regression estimators with high breakdown point and/or with high efficiency are compared under several simulated situations. The paper analyses and compares distributions of estimates as well as relative efficiencies calculated from mean squared errors (MSE) in the simulation study. We conclude that MM-estimators or GR-estimators are a good choice for the real data application.

  • Cancer is a major cause of death in dogs worldwide, and the incidence of cancer in dogs is increasing. The attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (ATR-FTIR) technique is a powerful tool for the diagnosis of several diseases. This method enables samples to be examined directly without pre-preparation. In this study, we evaluated the diagnostic value of ATR-FTIR for the detection of cancer in dogs. Cancer-bearing dogs (n = 30) diagnosed by pathologists and clinically healthy dogs (n = 40) were enrolled in this study. Peripheral blood was collected for clinicopathological diagnosis. ATR-FTIR spectra were acquired, and principal component analysis was performed on the full wave number spectra (4,000-650 cm-1). The leave-one-out cross validation technique and partial least squares regression analysis were used to predict normal and cancer spectra. Red blood cell counts, hemoglobin levels and white blood cell counts were significantly lower in cancer-bearing dogs than in clinically healthy dogs (p < 0.01, p < 0.01 and p = 0.03, respectively). ATR-FTIR spectra showed significant differences between the clinically healthy and cancer-bearing groups. This finding demonstrates that ATR-FTIR can be applied as a screening technique to distinguish between cancer-bearing dogs and healthy dogs.

  • Damping ratio and frequency have influence on dynamic serviceability or instability such as vortex-induced vibration and displacement amplification due to earthquake and critical flutter velocity, and it is thus important to make determination of damping ratio and frequency accurate. As bridges are getting longer, small scale model test considering similitude law must be conducted to evaluate damping ratio and frequency. Analysis conditions modified by similitude law are applied to experimental test considering different scale ratios. Generally, Nyquist frequency condition based on natural frequency modified by similitude law has been used to determine sampling rate for different scale ratios, and total time length has been determined by users arbitrarily or by considering similitude law with respect to time for different scale ratios. However, Nyquist frequency condition is not suitable for multimode system with noisy signals. In addition, there is no specified criteria for determination of total time length. Those analysis conditions severely affect accuracy of damping ratio. The focus of this study is made on the determination of minimum analysis conditions for different scale ratios. Influence of signal to noise ratio is studied according to the level of noise level. Free initial value problem is proposed to resolve the condition that is difficult to know original initial value for free vibration. Ambient and free vibration tests were used to analyze the dynamic properties of a system using data collected from tests with a two degree-of-freedom section model and performed on full bridge 3D models of cable stayed bridges. The free decay is estimated with the stochastic subspace identification method that uses displacement data to measure damping ratios under noisy conditions, and the iterative least squares method that adopts low pass filtering and fourth order central differencing. Reasonable results were yielded in numerical and experimental tests.

  • Antarctica, where ice sheet has been declined rapidly, should be monitored periodically. However, there are difficult to access for local survey or aircraft observation due to the vast and extreme environments of the polar regions. In order to overcome this problem, there have been a lot of studies by acquiring radar or laser data by satellite. It is also difficult to accurately measure the changes of the surface where is composed of snow or ice layer, and it is also difficult to product a high-resolution DEM. This study therefore aims to product DEMs of two periods using high-resolution KOMPSAT-3A stereo images, and DEM matching is implemented by the LZD(Least-squares Z-Differences) method to detect DEM changes in both periods. As a result, the proposed method could be suggested as comparing height differences of the two DEMs within 1m precision.

  • Whether rating curves are used in practice or new ones are derived, the characteristics of regression analysis are often neglected. For example, a discharge rating curve, which is established from a regression of observed water levels (H) on observed flowrates(Q), is sometimes used for estimating a design water level corresponding to a simulated design flood runoff. However, if independent and dependent variables are changed with each other, the regression equation is changed in existing regression analysis, which is derived from vertical errors between observed data and regression line. Thus, regression equations should not be applied inversely. To avoid this problem, A new two-way variable least-squares regression analysis is proposed. The new method was applied to the rating curves of five water level stations on main stream of Nakdong River. The three kinds of regression models, which are respectively regression of Q versus H (model 1), H versus Q (model 2) and two-way (model 3), showed that the new method can reduce inadvertent mistakes when applied in practice.

  • Rebar corrosion in cement mortar containing chloride ions was investigated by electrochemical AC impedance spectroscopy. Corrosion of mild steel bar was accelerated by an acceleration test equipment in short period. Impedance values obtained from AC-impedance method could be adapted to the proposed electrochemical equivalent circuit model and they were consistent with calculated values obtained by CNLS fitting method. The weight loss of rebar could be calculated by charge transfer resistance($R_2$) with time and it was close to real value.

  • In this study, we considered linear regression model with various spatial dependency structures in order to make more reliable prediction of precipitation in South Korea. The prediction approaches are based on semi-variogram models fitted by least-squares estimation method and restricted maximum likelihood estimation method. We validated some candidate models from the two different estimation methods in terms of cross-validation and comparison between predicted values and observed values measured at different locations.
