Interface friction in the service load assessment of slab-on-girder bridge beams

  • Many slab-on-girder bridges around the world are being assessed because they are approaching the end of their anticipated design lives or codes are permitting higher allowable loads. Current analytical techniques assume that the concrete and steel components act independently, typically requiring full-scale load testing to more accurately predict the remaining strength or endurance of the structure. However, many of the load tests carried out on these types of bridges would be unnecessary if the degree of interaction resulting from friction at the steel-concrete interface could be adequately modeled. Experimental testing confirmed that interface friction has a negligible effect on the flexural capacity of a slab-on-girder beam however, it also showed that interface friction is significant under serviceability loading. This has led to the development of an improved analytical technique which is presented in this paper and referred to as the slab-on-girder mixed analysis service load assessment approach.

Miscibility and Properties of cis-Polybutadiene/Ethyl-Branched Polyethylene Blends (II)

  • Cis-Polybutadiene (cis-PBD) and the three polyethylenes (PE's) having different branch content were mixed to investigate crystallinity, thermodynamic interaction parameter(c), and diluents effect. Crys-tallinty of PE's decreased with increasing content of amorphous cis-PBD because of a decrease in both the degree of annealing and kinetics of diffusion of the crystallizable polymer content. The thermodynamic interaction parameter(c) for the three blend systems approximately equals to zero near the melting point. These systems were determined to be miscible on a molecular scale near or above the crystalline melting point of the crystalline PE's. From the measurement of T$\sub$m/ vs. T$\sub$c/ behavior, all the three blends showed a straight line for a plot of T$\sub$m/ vs. T$\sub$c/. This result means that the melting behavior of PE is mainly due to a diluent effect of cis-PBD component.

  • In this work we have studied the multilayer stepwise adsorption of gases on solid adsorbents based on the previously developed theory. It is shown that stepwise adsorption isotherms emerge from our theory if an ad hoc adsorption regarding the degree of occupation for each successive layer is abolished and the effect of lateral intermolecular interactions among adsorbate molecules is included. In addition to these the effect of vertical interactions has also been taken into consideration. It seems that the vertical interaction plays a role in deciding the shape and the position of steps in resulting isotherms. It is evident from this research that it is the lateral interaction that is responsible for stepwise adsorption as long as the adsorbent surface is uniform and temperature is sufficiently low.

  • Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and potential EDCs are mostly man-made, found in various materials such as pesticides, additives or contaminants in food, and personal care products. The high energy ionizing radiation has the ability to remove the EDCs with a very high degree of reliability and in a clean and efficient manner. The ionizing radiation interacts with EDCs both directly and indirectly. Direct interaction takes place with EDCs and the structure of EDCs is destroyed or changed. During indirect interaction, radiolysis products of water result in the formation of highly reactive intermediates which then react with the target molecules, culminating in structural changes. To confirm the radiation reduction of EDCs in industrial sludge, a pilot scale experiment up to 50 kGy of electron beam (EB) was conducted with samples from the textile dyeing industries. The experimental result showed the over 90% of reduction of Nonylphenol (NP) and Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) at around 10 kGy of absorbed doses.

Effect of the Interaction between Matrix and Nitrate Additives on the Sintering of Silicon Nitride

  • The interaction between commercial $Si_3N_4$ powder and two types of additives (nitrate and oxide additives) during the sintering of $Si_3N_4$ was investigated. The nitrates solution or oxide particles were added as a sintering additives. The surface of mixed powder was observed with FT-IR, TG, and HREM. DTA was used to characterize the reactivity of the powders. The formation of crystalline phases and phase transformation were analyzed by XRD. The adsorption of the additives on the surface of silicon nitride was confirmed in the nitrate salts. It was shown that the adsorption occurred by interaction between the amorphous $SiO_2$ layer on the $Si_3N_4$ surface and metal cations $(Al^{3++\; and \;Y^{3+})$ and anions $(NO_3\;^-\; or\; OH^-)$, resulting in a higher degree of homogeneous distribution of additives.

  • The interactions of FD & C Red No.3 (erythrosine) in 1 or 2% concentrations with various types of pharmaceutical gelatins were studied. In visible region spectroscopy type A gelatin showed 6 nm bathochromic shift in ${\lambda}_{max}$ of erythrosine, but no shifts were observed in other gelatins. Various results were obtained in the decrease of absorbance from 0.06 to 0.25. In dissolution study, the gelatin that showed the greatest spectral change exhibited the worst profile. From above results, it is concluded that erythrosine interacted to the greatest extent with type A gelatin and in the case of type B gelatin the degree of the interaction in different according to their specifications.

Interaction between Water Quality and Substrate on Benthic Macroinvertebrates Index (BMI) (수질 및 하상기질이 저서동물지수(BMI)에 미치는 상호작용)

  • The benthic macroinvertebrates index (BMI) was developed based on the 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), which is the amount of biodegradable organic matter in stream water. However, benthic macroinvertebrates mainly live in the streambed substrate and are affected by the interaction of water quality and substrate. This study was conducted to examine the interactive relationship between water quality items (BOD5, total phosphorus (TP), total suspended solids (TSS)) and substrate with BMI by performing statistical analyses (four-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation analysis, partial correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis). The data used in the analyses were collected from 19,915 sampling units at 1,937 sites in South Korea from 2010 to 2020. The interaction effect between BOD5 and substrate types was confirmed through a four-way analysis of variance. Partial correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis estimated the degree of influence on the change in BMI value in the order of mean grain size of the substrate as (𝜱m) > BOD5 > TP > TSS. BMI can be regarded as an index that evaluates the comprehensive effects of water quality and streambed status, although it is an index that was developed based on the amount of biodegradable organic matter in a water column.

  • The purpose of the study was to explore the correlation between in-degree and out-degree centrality Social Network Indices and cognitive and affective learning outcomes measures in an e-Learning environment. Results indicate both the out-degree and in-degree centrality indices are correlated with the cognitive learning outcome measures only. Further, results of the follow-up multiple regression analyses describe the cognitive learning outcome would be predicted by both the in-degree centrality (52%) and out-degree centrality (8%). A discussion is provided to interpret the results and limitations are specified.

  • Recently, immersive VR/AR contents have actively increased, and various services related to VR/AR allow users to experience remote places. For example, if failure situations occur frequently in factory of the remote site, mixed reality (MR) with a synthetic virtual human expert in reconstructed remote location can help immediate maintenance task with interaction between the operator and the virtual expert. In this paper, we present a technique for synthesizing the virtual human after capturing a 360-degree panorama of a remote environment, and analyze the effects to apply a method of guiding virtual human by interaction types. According to this paper, it was shown that co-presence level significantly increased when verbal, facial expression, and non-verbal animation of the virtual human was all expressed.
