Using raw data of the 'Family income and expenditure survey,' we find that the earning distribution worsened in Korea after the financial crisis; the gap between ninetieth and tenth percentile grew larger after the crisis more than before. Such a phenomenon is apparent within narrowly defined education and labor market experience variables. We found that the increase in earning inequality came from the rapidly increasing return to the components of skill other than the schooling and experience, which is caused by the increasing demand of skill after the crisis. Therefore, we can interpret the growing demand for skill is an important factor leading the increase in the earning inequality after the Crisis. And then, we think that the reason for the increasing demand for skill after the crisis can be found in the changes of the technology, the organizational and personnel practice, the globalization, and the labor market. We can derive policy implications from this : To narrow the inequality we must invest the industrial demand-oriented education.
There has been a large literature on bank liquidity risk since the 2008 global financial crisis because liquidity risk was at the heart of the crisis. However, there is no study that investigates whether the level of investor protection influences liquidity risk-taking behavior of banks. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationship between investor protection and liquidity risk as well as to provide policy implications. Using a panel dataset of commercial banks in 21 OECD countries, we found that strong investor protection encourages banks to take lower liquidity risk. Furthermore, this positive role of shareholder protection is more prominent during a crisis, implying that legal protection of investors plays an essential role in bank stability while market discipline is largely ineffective due to extensive government guarantees in turbulent times.

In the international markets, financial variables can be volatile and may affect each other, especially in the crisis times. COVID-19, which began in China in 2019 and spread to many countries of the world, created a crisis not only in the global health system but also in the international financial markets and economy. The purpose of this study is to analyze the contagious effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volatility of selected financial variables such as Bitcoin, gold, oil price, and exchange rates and the connections between the volatilities of these variables during the pandemic. For this aim, we use the ARMA-EGARCH model to measure the impact of volatility and shocks. In other words, it is aimed to measure whether the impact of the shock on the financial variables of the contagiousness of the epidemic is also transmitted to the markets. The data was collected from secondary and daily data from September 2th 2019 to December 20th, 2020. It can be said that the findings obtained have statistically significant effects on the conditional variability of the variables. Therefore, there are findings that the shocks in the market are contaminated with each other.
Purpose - This paper elucidates a nexus between the occurrence of rare disaster events and the volatility of economic growth by distinguishing the likelihood of rare events from stochastic volatility. We provide new empirical facts based on a quarterly time series. In particular, we focus on the role of financial liberalization in spreading the economic crisis in developing countries. Design/methodology - We use quarterly data on consumption expenditure (real per capita consumption) from 44 countries, including advanced and developing countries, ending in the fourth quarter of 2020. We estimate the likelihood of rare event occurrences and stochastic volatility for countries using the Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method developed by Barro and Jin (2021). We present our estimation results for the relationship between rare disaster events, stochastic volatility, and growth volatility. Findings - We find the global common disaster event, the COVID-19 pandemic, and thirteen country-specific disaster events. Consumption falls by about 7% on average in the first quarter of a disaster and by 4% in the long run. The occurrence of rare disaster events and the volatility of gross domestic product (GDP) growth are positively correlated (4.8%), whereas the rare events and GDP growth rate are negatively correlated (-12.1%). In particular, financial liberalization has played an important role in exacerbating the adverse impact of both rare disasters and financial market instability on growth volatility. Several case studies, including the case of South Korea, provide insights into the cause of major financial crises in small open developing countries, including the Asian currency crisis of 1998. Originality/value - This paper presents new empirical facts on the relationship between the occurrence of rare disaster events (or stochastic volatility) and growth volatility. Increasing data frequency allows for greater accuracy in assessing a country's specific risk. Our findings suggest that financial market and institutional stability can be vital for buffering against rare disaster shocks. It is necessary to preemptively strengthen the foundation for financial stability in developing countries and increase the quality of the information provided to markets.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze contagion in Asian foreign exchange markets using Extreme Value Theory and Copula. Our application deals with asymptotic dependence of daily exchange rate return for a sample of eight countries over period 1997.1.1-2005.4.13. The empirical results are summarized as follows. Firstly, Gumbel Copula is a good model to our data according to the value of AIC. Secondly, the extremal dependence between East Asian crisis countries became lower in the post crisis period than the crisis period. Thirdly, It seemed that high extremal dependence exists between East Asian countries with Singapore. Fourthly, the tail dependence between Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippine became higher in the crisis period than the total period and post crisis period. Fifthly, the fact that the extremal dependence between Korea and Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippine did not increase during the Asian Financial Crisis showed that the contagion effect was not the reason of the Korea's Fiancial Crisis. Sixthly, the extremal dependence between Asian exchange markets was not very high while comparing with the European exchange markets.
Although many theoretical studies have tried to explain the volatility in financial markets using models of herd behavior, there have been few empirical studies on dynamic herding due to the technical difficulty of detecting herd behavior with time-series data. Thus, this paper theoretically extends a continuous beliefs system belonging to an agent based economic model by introducing a term representing agents'mutual dependence into each agent's utility function and derives a SV(stochastic volatility)-type econometric model. From this model the time-varying herding parameters are efficiently estimated by a Markov chain Monte Carlo method. Using monthly data of KOSPI and DOW, this paper provides some empirical evidences for stronger herding in the Korean stock market than in the U.S. stock market, and further stronger herding after the global financial crisis than before it. More interesting finding is that time-varying herd behavior has weak autocorrelation and the global financial crisis may increase its volatility significantly.
In the recent 20 years, the capital flows between Korea and European Union have increased and diversified. In particular, the business cycles of two economies have shown similar patterns since the Global Financial Crisis. This study examines both trends and investigates the roles of finance and trade on business cycle co-movements between two economies. The empirical results show that the business cycles can diverge due to either the common shocks or the country-specific shocks. Furthermore, financial integration increases the business cycle co-movements driven by both the country-specific shocks and the common shocks between two economies.
The Chinese dual structure of employment('Shuangguizhi') has been retained through the Economic Reforms, and has been supported and reproduced by the system of division between rural and urban household registration. In the 2000s, efforts of the government to abolish the division appeared to be effective with the introduction of the 'Labor Contract Act'. However, the eclecticism of the Act and the outbreak of the global financial crisis in 2008 gave new momentum to the revival of the Chinese dual structure of employment by increasing the scale of labor dispatching. Labor dispatching in China has become a regular form of employment rather than an exceptional one. Labor dispatching reveals its Chinese characteristics against the particular background formed during the periods of state-owned-enterprise restructuring around 2000. The combined effects of the 'Labor Contract Act' and the global financial crisis brought about the effect of increase rather than control of labor dispatching, and gave a signal to enterprises to use various forms of labor dispatching including 'reverse directional labor dispatching' to lessen burdens and costs caused by the Act and the crisis. As labor dispatching strengthens or displaces the existing dual structure of employment, social groups which need more social protection tend to be much more excluded from the protection of the government and the society.
Recently, in the asset management industry, the smart beta strategy, which has an intermediate nature between passive and active strategies, is attracting attention. In this smart beta strategy, value, momentum, low volatility, and quality index are widely used. In this study, we analyzed the quality index which is not clear and complicated to calculate. According to the MSCI methodology, the quality index was calculated using three variables: return on equity, debt to equity, and earnings variability. In addition, we use the index using only return on equity variable, the index using only two variables of return on equity and debt to equity, and the KOSPI index as comparison targets for the quality index. In order to evaluate the performance of the indices used in the analysis, the arithmetic mean return, the coefficient of variation, and the geometric mean return were used. In addition, Fama and French (1993) model, which is widely used in related studies, was used as a pricing model to test whether abnormal returns in each index are occurring. The results of the empirical analysis are as follows. First, in all period analysis, quality index was the best in terms of holding period returns. Second, the quality index performed best in the currency crisis and the global financial crisis. Third, abnormal returns were not found in all indices before the global financial crisis. Fourth, in the period after the global financial crisis, the quality index has the highest abnormal return.
