  • Objectives: This study was conducted to compare the mothers' rearing attitude of ADHD children and that of children with depressive disorder. Methods: The participant consisted of 58 school-aged children diagnosed as ADHD, 14 children diagnosed as depressive disorder based on DSM-IV criteria. Normal control group consisted of 34 school-aged children who are free of any diagnosis of psychiatric disorders. Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire, Parenting Style Questionnaire, Children's Depression Inventory, Marital Satisfaction Scale, Beck's Depression Inventory were administered to all children and their mothers. Results: The parents of ADHD children showed more aggressive/hostile, neglecting/indifferent and less warm/affectionate parenting styles to their children than those of the depression and control groups. The depressive group perceived their parents as more rejecting than the control groups. Conclusion: The externalizing symptoms of ADHD might provoke parental distress and make it difficult for the parents to show positive rearing attitude toward their children. The depressive children might be more sensitive and perceptive to the negative sign of their parents' rearing attitude.

  • Deviation behavior of adolescents is often expressed as clothing behavior being against the social or school rules. To understand the relationship between social variables and clothing behavior of adolescents, the study investigated the effect of social variables on the deviation attitude and behavior related to clothing. Survey was utilized to collect the data and subjects were 411 female high school students. Regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The results were as follows : The closer relationship female high school students had with their parents, the more negative attitude they took toward clothing deviation and the less they committed the deviant behaviors related to clothing. The results explained that the close relationships with adolescents and their parents kept adolescents from committing the deviant behaviors related to clothing. The subjects who were interested in studying and well adapted for their school life, not only took a negative attitude toward clothing deviation but also committed the deviant behaviors related to clothing less than the other subjects did. The level of social deviation of their friends had an effect on the attitude and experience toward clothing deviation more than the relationship with their parents or school life did. The understanding of the relationship between social variables and clothing deviation would help to decrease the clothing deviation of adolescents by controling the social variables.

General characteristics of the subjects such as their school grades, and religion, and their parents' level of educational, marital status, and income were also analyzed in relation with the three major variables. Female adolescents' psychological well-being consisted of two indices: self-esteem and depression. The sample of this study consisted of 419 female students from 4 middle schools and 2 high schools located in Jeollabuk-Do province and the data were collected by using the method of self-administered questionnaires. The results of the analyses showed that there were significant differences in the level of parental attachment across parents' marital status, father's education level, and family income. Participants' psychological well-being levels were also different according to their grades, parents' marital status, and father's education level and income; and the level of eating attitude was different according to their school grades. The correlation analyses results indicated that parental attachment was positively related to self-esteem but negatively to a depressive mood. In addition, female students' eating attitudes were negatively associated with parental attachment and self-esteem, but positively with a depressive mood. Finally, multiple regression analysis found that a negative eating attitude was strongly influenced by a depressive mood, while parental attachment seemed to influence eating attitude indirectly through a depressive mood.
