A study on a textbook, 'Understanding on Steel' to teach young meister of steel industry (철강산업분야 영마이스터 인력 양성 위한 '철강의 이해' 교과서 내용 선정 연구)

  • This study aims at selecting contents of a text book, 'Understanding on Steel', and at presenting compilation methods of that book based on the previous researches on teaching young meister of steel industry. To do that, this, first analyzes subject profiles of textbooks on 'Understanding on Steel' to make questionnaires for the textbook compilation. Second, this study selects textbook contents improved through interviews. Third, this study revises, and complements broad contents, and selects detail units by selected professional committee which is composed of textbook researchers and editor groups. The research results are as follows: First, this study confirms that the formation of the broad contents of 'Understanding on Steel' presented in textbook profiles are appropriate, Second, this study selects subjects of detailed units along with the middle units of 'Understanding on Steel' by selecting parts needed to be improved in terms of the textbook formation. Third, this study presents the text formation system for the broad, middle and detailed units of the textbook, 'Understanding on Steel'.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the principles for the development of mathematics textbook based on storytelling through literature review, textbook development, and classroom implementation. Mathematics textbook based on storytelling has been developed to help students learn mathematics interesting and meaningful. The principle for the development principles include as the principle of context, process-oriented, communication, and diversity. The developed mathematics textbooks was implemented in high school mathematics classes in order to investigate the effectiveness of the textbooks. We analyzed the data collected by the survey and the interview to find that the mathematics textbook based on storytelling had positive effect on teaching and learning of mathematics. We discussed the implication for the future development and implementation of mathematics textbook based on storytelling.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to extend the knowledge about the textbook, Public Health Nursing Textbook (in Korean, Gongjungwisaeng Kanhohak) which is published in 1933 by the Nurses' Association of Korea. Methods: Public Health Nursing Textbook was investigated from the cover page to the last page and compared with two original books and other nursing books published in modern Korea. Results: Public Health Nursing Textbook was the forth published Korean nursing textbook and the first published Korean public health nursing textbook. Rosenberger, a missionary nurse from USA, Lee Keumjeon, Korean public health nurse who studied in Canada, and other Koreans were in charge of translation, etc. It is a user - friendly book written mainly in Korean (Hangul) with Chinese characters and included the English table of contents, preface and back cover. Most of its contents were extracted and translated from two original books, one is Public Health Nursing by Mary Gardner and the other is Personal Hygiene Applied by Jesse Williams. It is worth noting that the book not only introduced the public health nurses's activities across the country, but also focused on the information necessary for common health problems at that time. Conclusion: From the Public Hygiene and Nursing, it can be seen that public health nurses had been independently educated since Imperial Japan's colonial period, and public health nursing was growing as a independent field in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to perform research on the development of core course textbooks in the LIS field. The process of textbook development proposed in this study can also be a useful reference for developing the textbooks for other, non-core courses. The textbook development procedure used was as follows; 1) investigating and analyzing the main textbooks of LIS core courses domestically and abroad, 2) deriving optimal curriculum content from job analysis results, 3) gathering comment and feedback from professors teaching core courses, 4) proposing a final, three-tiered table of contents for an optimal textbook. The textbook table of contents proposed as a result of this research relates to the core subjects of: Introduction to Library and Information Science, Information Services, Library Management, Information Organization, Information Retrieval, and Library Fieldwork. We suggested chapter and section levels for all subjects, and list all of the details that should be dealt with in each section; instructors are then able to select from these options at their discretion.

Development of Digital Textbook for Maternity Nursing Practice for the Internet: Nursing Care of Women in Labor and Delivery (모성간호학 실습 전자교과서 개발 - 산부간호편 -)

  • This study was done to develop a digital textbook for students to use over the internet for maternity nursing practice. The textbook is not only for student nurses, but also for nurse midwives and nurses working in the maternity. The process used was as follows; 1. Existing educational media on maternity nursing were reviewed and examined. 2. Workshops and meetings were held to decide the most appropriate type of presentation. 3. The digital content including text, pictures, audios, and videos were developed using Macromedia Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premier. 4.Revisions were made recursively as the content was previewed and implemented over the internet by professionals and the end-users. 5. A database of members and a web survey module were developed and posted. The clinical implication of a digital textbook over the internet is the possibility of using it to educate many student nurses throughout the country and to disseminate the content for whoever needs it in practice settings and facilities. Another implication is that this site stressed interactivity by developing member database and web survey. In conclusion, the study found this first trial of digital textbook to be a unique educational media for nursing skills practice. Further refinement of this media is strongly recommended.

Empirical Analysis of Learning Effectiveness in u-Learning Environment with Digital Textbook

  • The purpose of this study is to present innovative approaches for u-Learning environment in public education with Digital Textbook. The Korean Government has been making efforts to introduce the u-Learning environment to maximize the learning effect in public education with Digital Textbook. However, there are only a few studies that analyze the effectiveness of u-Learning environment and Digital Textbook. This paper reviews the current status of u-Learning environment in Korea and analyzes the satisfaction level with Digital Textbooks. The first survey regarding technological factors was collected from 197 students. The results of the survey revealed that the level of satisfaction has declined over a year. The weakness of the study is that the sample frame is insufficient and survey questions did not reflect diverse factors of learning effectiveness. To supplement these shortcomings, 2,226 students were asked about learning performance. The results of the survey showed that the satisfaction with Digital Textbooks is much higher than that of paper textbooks. However, this paper is limited to u-Learning environments in public education. Therefore, research needs to be improved by reflecting both public and private sectors of education in following studies. This paper suggests useful guidelines to educators in improving their u-Learning environment.

  • The authors have developed a reading & writing textbook for engineering students to improve their communication capability, and also analyzed the outcomes that the students accomplished through the Engineering Reading and Writing class. The reading & writing textbook has been organized to be used as a guidebook with which the engineering students can practically solve the problems that they would face continuously after they finish their regular curriculum and when they are employed. The questionnaire survey analysis has been performed in order to evaluate the textbook contents, lecturing, and learning outcomes for the lecturers and students finished the engineering reading and writing classes. Desirable evaluation has been resulted in the broad areas: subject extraction from the readings, logical understanding, summarizing, practical writing, writing principle, etc.

Comments on Developing Mathematics Textbooks Based on Constructivism (구성주의가 수학 교과용 도서에 주는 시사와 난점)

  • The primary purpose of this study is to investigate problems with the current mathematics textbook. According to a survey, the following were the findings: Textbook is only a tool-book for introducing mathematical facts. It is a unique book for all students possessing different level of mathematical ability. There is difficulty in teaming math using technological devices and in activating(mental and concrete) manipulative activities. There is difficulty in communicating while doing mathematics. There is lack of defined and developed layout of textbook, et. al. It can be however found that these problems can be solved to some degrees, when mathematics textbook is developed based on constructivism. Recently, in mathematics education, it has been gradually emphasized that constructivism can be powerful in teaching and learning mathematics. There are however some difficulties in developing mathematics textbooks to reflect constructivism, such as to fill the gap between the contents written in the national curriculum determined in advance and the contents which students construct psychologically or socially in mathematics class.

Concept Mapping Based on Chapter "III. Universe" of High School Earth Science Textbook (고등학교 지구과학 교과서 "III. 우주" 단원의 개념도 작성)

  • The concept map is the diagram of two dimensions which hierachically arrays main concepts from those of the textbook and shows their relations. The research analyzed five of the ten high school earthscience textbooks approved by the Minister of Education according to the 6th reformed curriculum in 1995, one of which this research chose to make out the concept maps. The chapter [III. the Universe] contains the outer space of the earth presents new concepts about the stars and the universe and introduces the latest research in astronomy. This study changed textbook contents into Novak's concept map, searched for concepts requiring complement for learners in oder to obtain concepts from those of the textbook and pointed out problems on the basis of that result still better concept map is set up. We have the following conclusions. First, it is necessary to rule out unnecessary small units so as to make more effective understanding and to rearrange the units to have relation to contents. Second, the higher concept and lower concept need to be rearranged systematically in making an array of textbook contents. Third, the concept should have something to do with learners' experences and consciousness by showing learners the real examples relevant to the concept for the link between them.

  • In order to help students learn geometric concepts in mathematics in an easy and interesting way, the present study restructured the textbook so that it utilizes GSP based on van Hiele's theory. In addition, we purposed to examine how effective the restructured textbook is in enhancing students' van Hiele level and to lay a base for the active use of GSP in learning figures in elementary school. In conclusion, the results of this study is expected to solve problems in the structure of the current textbook such as the violation of continuity in van Hiele's theory and inconsistency between the level of textbook contents and students' level through the restructuring of the textbook using GSP and provide helps for effective figure learning. In addition, this research is expected to be an opportunity for the active use of GSP in teaching figures in elementary school.
