  • In this study, we extracted geometrical learning content that is treated similarly in elementary and middle schools, and analyzed the differences between how this study is handled in elementary and middle schools. The analysis tools used in this study were developed by referring to the research results presented by Merrill. Merrill classified the study results into two dimensions: 'performance level' and 'content type', and 'teach station' and 'proposal type' by presenting the contents in the textbook. Based on this classification, this study was conducted. According to the results of the study, nine achievement criteria were extracted as learning factors that were treated similarly in elementary and middle schools. The extracted learning elements were systematically analyzed through analysis tools. The results of this study are expected to provide significant implications for the improvement of mathematics learning and for the improvement of new curricula.

  • this study, the teaching methods of three science teachers for lead-iodide precipitation reaction experiment were compared. The difference of 9th grade students' understanding was searched according to the science teachers teaching styles, also. Among the three teachers, Teacher A taught students based on the science textbook and allowed students to think themselves and to get out conclusion by the experiment. Teacher B and Teacher C gave students a lot of explanations related to interpretation of the experiment. The percentage of no response on the experiment report of Teacher A was higher than those of Teacher B and Teacher C. But the students of Teacher B and Teacher C tended to have limited thoughts because of the teachers explanations. In spite of the difference, it was common phenomenon that few students understood concepts through the experiment. A lot of students were interested in the experiment, but it was hard to understand Law of definite proportions according to the experiment.

  • Given the lack of research on the measurement domain, this paper analyzed the statements related to length and area in the curricular materials developed under the 7th and the current mathematics curriculum in terms of the degree of guidance and the key learning elements of measurement. The results showed that despite the similarity of the most prevalent guidance type and learning elements, the current materials used open-ended or combined types in place of guided types and employed measurement reasoning and components while decreasing mere calculation in measurement, in comparison with the previous textbooks and workbooks. This paper close with implications on the revision of curricular materials related to the measurement domain as well as methodological suggestions of textbook analysis.

  • This study was conducted to inquire the semantic structure with science terminology used in middle school science class, and based on this, we wanted to look for the way to increase effectiveness of science teaching. In this study, we extracted twenty-six science terminologies used in "Force and Motion" unit in middle school science textbook, and administered word association test using the 26 science terminologies to 316 middle school students. As the result, we found that students had a divergent semantic structure to given science terminology, and there were cases to be interpreted as different meaning with teacher's intention. Also, we identified the terminologies which were not familiar to middle school students. It was found that female students were more familiar with science termilology than male students, and there were differences between schools.

  • Since based on the revised educational curriculum, the insects and spiders in eight biology textbooks I and II of high school are as follows. In class level, two classes, Insecta and Arachnida were investigated and their frequence numbers in the textbooks were a total of 143 times. In order level, 12 orders in insecta, 2 orders in Aranea were appeared in the textbooks. The most appearing frequence number was represented in Lepidoptera (33 times) and then in Araneae (11 times). For each publisher, the most appearing frequencies of insecta and spiders was shown in Gyohaksa (23 times), and then in Hyeongseol and Centurla education research institute (21times, respectively). In the textbooks, four species were found to misidentify in their species name and five mistakes were investigated in their photos and content.

  • In this study, we investigated the elements of knowledge and information processing competence of science inquiry activities in grades 3-6 science textbooks. For this purpose, the elements of knowledge and information processing competence were extracted and a framework for analysis was created. Analysis of eight science textbooks for grades 3-6 in elementary school was carried out using the analysis framework. The following results were obtained by the analysis framework: First, we divided the knowledge and information processing competence into five elements: 'collection,' 'analysis,' 'expression,' 'selection,' and 'evaluation.' Second, the elements of knowledge and information processing competence of science inquiry activity of elementary science textbooks were not evenly composed. The science inquiry activities of elementary science textbooks focused on 'collection' and 'analysis' among the five elements of the knowledge and information processing competence, followed by 'expression,' 'selection,' and 'evaluation.' As a result, we found that a science inquiry model or a science instruction model is needed to develop the knowledge and information processing competence in elementary school science curriculum.

  • The photoelectric effect is a representative phenomenon explaining the particle nature of light and is an important theme that led to the transition from classical physics to modern physics. Although the secondary school curriculum deals with the photoelectric effect, teachers and students are often confused with terms because the explanation of the 'light intensity' is different from that of electromagnetic waves. Hence, this study examines how modern physics textbooks explain the intensity of light through photon model. We analyzed the photoelectric effect unit of 10 modern physics textbooks. Results show that there are two different types of representation on 'light intensity.' Especially those two different types were found even within a textbook. Modern physics textbooks do not seem to provide a unified presentation of the light and cautions to describe the photoelectric effect and its interpretation are suggested for teaching light intensity in modern physics.

  • The concept of zero(0) and calculations involving 0 are a few of the most difficult topics that students experience in learning mathematics. Therefore, it implies that proper guidance to help students understand the desirable concept of 0 and acquire calculating process involving 0 should be provided when we teach numbers and operations. This study aims to investigate instructional situations in relation to the errors of 0 and to search for efficient ways to teach them based on the previous research. To do this, we analysed elementary mathematics textbooks and workbooks. The result showed that $0{\div}$(a number) and the division of which quotient includes 0 as a middle digit lacked in current textbooks and workbooks. We devised the learning activities of the two topics for 3rd grades and 4th grades, respectively. We expect that the activities will be helpful to devise learning activities of textbook and suggest some implications for teaching the calculations involving 0.

  • At the point when textbooks based on storytelling have been used in math classes for elementary first and second grades, this research analyzed any changes in perspectives of in-service teachers towards storytelling education, to promote further application for teaching and learning math by storytelling in the future. 30 in service teachers who have used math textbooks based on storytelling were surveyed in March and in July, 2013. For the better understanding of the survey results, four of the subjects were selected and interviewed. Consequently, teachers' perspectives towards the appropriateness and efficiency of the storytelling education did not change significantly. It also suggested that the most suitable area for storytelling is measurement, the least suitable area is geometry, and storytelling by real-life applications is effective in teaching elementary math.

  • The Korean history textbook is a basic teaching material for learning history. Students learn the past and also understand history through Korean history textbooks. The Korean history textbooks are comprised of educational materials arousing students' interest. What is helpful to education in the visual form is photo materials. As visual data, such photo materials play roles not only in arousing students' interest more than texts filled with writings, but also in making students experience history of the time indirectly in more objective form. Since such photo materials are playing essential roles in Korean history textbooks, if photos with errors are used, it can create huge confusion. This study analyzed the reliability and suitability of photo materials in eight Korean history textbooks of high school, depending on each type of photo. Then it suggested the measures of composing photo materials in Korean history textbooks revised in the future. The future textbooks will contain more amount of photo materials with the higher weight of photo materials.
