  • In this paper, we measured the propagation path loss by a ground to air flight communication test at UHF band and analyzed the results. The ground receiving terminal was located at 1,100m above sea level in Cheju Island and the airborne transmit terminal flew at an altitude of 3.5km from 150 to 220km from the ground terminal. In this case, the ground terminal and the airborne terminal are on the Line of Sight. Therefore loss in this communications environment can be predicted based on Free Space Loss. However, in this test, the sea level exists between two terminals, and due to the very small angle of incidence on the reflecting surface due to the long-range communication environment, it is not possible to accurately predict the loss of free space only. Therefore, considering that there are no surrounding obstacles and that a line of sight is secured between the end of two terminals, we applied a plane earth reflection model and a spherical earth reflection model to estimate the propagation path loss and compared with the actual test results. As a result of the comparison, the predicted propagation path loss by a spherical earth reflection model were quite similar to the actual test values.

  • Modern military operations rely heavily on broadband communication and data transmission. Recently, the rising use of intelligent unmanned technology necessitates more frequencies. Free-space optical(FSO) communication can offer high-data-rate communications with high security and no need for licensing. Therefore, the FSO communication holds significant interest and potential in the defense industry. In this paper, we present design of a FSO communication terminal taking Korean domestic weather conditions into account. The domestic atmospheric attenuation is analyzed using several models and two-year meteorological information for a city in Korea, and this analysis is utilized to design the FSO communication terminal. The design results were verified using an FSO communication test bed, and we achieved an Ethernet bandwidth of approximately 1.86 Gbps at a distance of 1.3 km with the optical amplifier output power of the test bed set to about 20 dBm.

  • There are claims that ESE(Early streamer emission) Air terminals offer a vastly increased zone of protection over that of traditional lightning rods by causing the emission of an upward streamer/leader that will propagate towards the tip of downward leader at an early stage in the attachment process than would occur for a simple rod in the same geometrical configurations. This paper shows the results of comparing test a particular type of ESE air terminals with a simple rod conducted in the KEH HV laboratory, which are lightning impulse voltage test, flashover direction test and corona emission current measurement. The results from this test show a completely random scattering of flashovers to the conventional and ESE air terminals under identical electrics] and geometrical conditions, and thus shows no advantage of one terminal over the other.

  • Purpose: We conducted a descriptive correlational study to determine a relationship between nurses' awareness of good death and attitudes toward terminal care, which in turn could be used as basic data for improvement of the quality of terminal care at geriatric hospitals. Methods: From April 3, 2013 through April 22, 2013, data were collected from 230 nurses working at geriatric hospitals. Results: Nurses' attitudes toward terminal care showed no significant correlation with awareness of good death, but it was positively correlated with a sense of closeness, a subfactor of awareness of good death. There was negative correlation between emotions regarding a deathbed, a subfactor of attitudes of nurses in charge of terminal patients, and awareness of good death. We found positive correlation between terminal care performance and awareness of good death. Conclusion: This study warrants the need for nursing education catered to characteristics of geriatric hospitals and development of diverse intervention strategies to help them to attain a positive attitude toward death by familiarizing themselves with the concept of good death and enhancing job satisfaction.
