  • Gravel shapes of the terrace gravel sequences are compared with the present river gravels and beach gravels in the Pohang and its surrounding areas. Seventeen gravel textural parameters are divided into 5 groups based on R-mode factor analysis. Among them, three parameters (RDm, MPSm, SZstd) are selected for a test of discriminant possibility of palaeoenvironment of the terrace gravel deposits. Marine gravels are in the range of 0.49 to 0.75 in mean roundness, 0.46 to 0.78 in mean maximum projection sphericity and 0.39 to 1.85 in standard deviation of size, whereas river gravels are 0.28 to 0.51 in mean roundness, 0.66 to 0.72 in mean maximum projection sphericity and 1.04 to 1.81 in standard deviation of size. For practical access to the palaeoenvironment discrimination, a bivariant diagram between mean roundness and mean maximum projection sphericity is the most effective. The marine terrace gravels are plotted within the variation range of present beach gravels and show 0.49 to 0.71 in mean roundness and 0.59 to 0.66 in mean maximum projection sphericity. The gravels of river terrace vary within the range of gravels derived from present river bed and are characterized as 0.36 to 0.48 in mean roundness and 0.66 to 0.71 in mean maximum projection sphericity.

  • This study described the results of converting RDB to RDF ontology by each of R2RML method and Non-R2RML method. This study measured the size of the converted data, the conversion time per each tuple, and the response speed to queries. The STNet, a structured terminology dictionary based on RDB, was served as a test bed for converting to RDF ontology. As a result of the converted data size, Non-R2RML method appeared to be superior to R2RML method on the number of converted triples, including its expressive diversity. For the conversion time per each tuple, Non-R2RML was a little bit more faster than R2RML, but, for the response speed to queries, both methods showed similar response speed and stable performance since more than 300 numbers of queries. On comprehensive examination it is evaluated that Non-R2RML is the more appropriate to convert the dynamic RDB system, such as the STNet in which new data are steadily accumulated, data transformation very often occurred, and relationships between data continuously changed.

  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is one of the most common congenital infections. The first case of discordant congenital CMV infection in twins occurred in Korea. A 31-year-old woman became pregnant with twins (dichorionic-diamniotic). An elective caesarean section was performed at 37 weeks. The first baby was male, weighing 2,410 g with an Apgar score of 8/9. The second baby was female, weighing 1,380 g with an Apgar score of 5/8. She had experienced intrauterine growth retardation, and presented with microcephaly, micrognathia, and joint stiffness. During the work-up for discordant twins, the second baby's serum test was positive for CMV immunoglobulin M. Her urine, blood, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were CMV polymerase chain reaction positive. The first baby's CMV tests were negative. Ophthalmologic exam and audiometry performed on the second baby showed CMV retinitis and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. She was treated with intravenous ganciclovir. Currently, she is bed-ridden and has significant developmental delay. Although the causes of discordant congenital CMV infection in twins are unclear, this case shows that discordant congenital CMV infection should be considered in twins with significant differences in intrauterine growth or clinical symptoms after birth.

  • This study was carried out to know the effect of urea addition for composting of paper mill sludge(PMS). For the purpose. PMSs containing 0%, 1.5%, 3%, and 6% urea were composted at aerated static pile(ASP) for about 80day periods. During the composting, the basic physical, chemical, and biological parameters such as temperature, color. C/N ratio, cation exchange capacity, and phytotoxic test were investigated. From the measurement of the parameters, 0~3% urea-containing PMS except for 6% urea-containing PMS showed to be normally stabilized. Thus among these treatments, 0% and 3% urea-containing PMS were applied at agitated bed system(ABS), a pilot plant of a large scale, to evaluate the possibility of practical use. Considering to the changes of the parameters investigated during composting in ASP and ABS, PMS showed to be successfully stabilized in the two facilities. However, when composted with PMS and urea, even the final PMS compost stabilized for a period enough brought out the bright grayish color. So it may be necessary to add a subsidiary amendments such as animal manure to form brown-colored products.

  • Recently, the concern of groynes that provide us with various ecological environment and improvement of scenary near river as well as hydraulic improvement has greatly increased for naturalized river and ecological river restoration. However there is no adequate design guidelines in Korea. Furthermore there is lack of research for installation of groynes in Korea. Thus, in this study, we have conducted hydraulic modeling test for kinds of groyne and changes of permeability and made a study of the analysis for installation factor of groyne. Experimental conditions were the fixed bed model for flow pattern of groyne tip and separation length about changes of groyne length and permeability. The Experiments were conducted to measure velocity and drift angle at groyne tip. The main study kas measured the groyne tip velocity for a factor of scour and drift angle for velocity increase at center of channel. We have suggested the equation about groyne tip velocity rate(tip velocity/ approach velocity) and area rate(groyne area/ flow area). And In recirculation zone of groyne downstream, To study the basic data of groyne about installation interval has analyzed the change of separation length and incidence angle. We have suggested the equation about separation length rate(separation length/ groyne length), changes of permeability and installation angle.

  • Objectives: 3D printing technologies have become widely developed and are increasingly being used for a variety of purposes. Recently, the evaluation of 3D printing operations has been conducted through chamber test studies, and actual workplace studies have yet to be completed. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the emission of volatile organic compounds(VOCs), metals, and particles from printing operations at a workplace. This included monitoring conducted at a commercial 3D printing service workplace where the processes involved material extrusion, material jetting, binder jetting, vat photo polymerization, and powder bed fusion. Methods: Area samples were collected with using a Tenax TA tube for VOC emission and MCE filter for metals in the workplace. For particle monitoring, Mini Particle Samplers(MPS) were also placed in the printer, indoor work area, and outdoor area. The objective was to analyze and identify particles' size, morphology, and chemical composition using transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy(TEM-EDS) in the workplace. Results: The monitoring revealed that the concentration of VOCs and metals generated during the 3D printing process was low. However, it also revealed that within the 3D printing area, the highest concentration of total volatile organic compounds(TVOC) was 4,164 ppb at the vat photopolymerization 3D printing workplace, and the lowest was 148 ppb at the material extrusion 3D printing workplace. For the metals monitoring, chromium, which, is carcinogenic for humans, was detected in the workplace. As a characteristic of the particles, nano-sized particles were also found during the monitoring, but most of them were agglomerated with large and small particles. Conclusions: Based on the monitoring conducted at the commercial 3D printing operation, the results revealed that the concentration of VOCs and metals in the workplace were within Korea's occupational exposure limits. However, due to the emission of nano-sized particles during 3D printing operations, it was recommended that the exposure to VOCs and metals in the workplace should be minimized out of concern for workers' health. It was also shown that the characteristics of particles emitted from 3D printing operations may spread widely within an indoor workplace.

  • To remove effectively order component ($NH_3\;and\;H_2S$) from pig house, biofilter was made of composted pine tree bark and polite and odor removal efficiency was evaluated in the lab and pilot scales. The columns were designed with ${\Phi}120mm{\times}450mm$ (H) and ${\Phi}850mm{\times}900mm$ (H) in the size in the lab and pilot scale testes, respectively. Single material of composted pine tree bark and polite and the mixture of two materials with 7:3 ratios (vol/vol) were packed in the column, and, herein air flow was controlled upward direction from column bottom. To enhance the efficiency of biofilter, ammonia (Rhodococcus equi A3) and hydrogen sulfide oxidizing bacteria (Alcaligenes sp. S5-5.2) were inoculated in packing materials before the test Removal effect of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide gases were higher in the mixture$[88.7{\sim}98.2%,\;89.5{\sim}97.9%]$ than that in single packing material (composted pine tree haft$[89.4{\sim}98.7%,\;78.7{\sim}85.6%]$ and petite$[65.3{\sim}73.2%,\;88.7{\sim}98.2%]$ by the lab scale biofilter. In the modeled pig house, about 96 and 91% of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide gases were removed by the pilot scale of biofilter, respectively. Conclusively, composted pine tree bark and polite could be a good candidate of biofilter packing materials to remove the odor components.

  • Riverbank filtration has been suggested as a cost-effective method for improving water quality. However, high concentrations of Fe2+ and Mn2+ cause problems for the use of water and the maintenance of facilities. We evaluated the effectiveness and efficiency of an Fe2+ and Mn2+ removal technique based on the in situ injection of highly oxygenated water at a site on the Anseong River, between Anseong City and Pyeongtaek City, Gyeonggi Province. The removal process consists of three steps: injection, resting, and extraction. Results show that the removal efficiency increases with repeated application of the process. The amount of Fe-reduced drinking water satisfying water regulations (limit, 0.3 mg/L Fe) obtained using oxygenated water injection was five times higher than the amount of injected oxygenated water. Levels of Mn2+ were also reduced following the injection of oxygenated water.

  • The inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation is introduced for variable water depth and potential function and separation of variables are introduced for the derivation. Only harmonic wave motions are considered. The governing equation composed of the potential function for irrotational flow is directly applied to the still water level, and the inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation for variable water depth is obtained. By introducing the wave amplitude and wave phase gradient the governing equation with complex potential function is transformed into two equations of real variables. The transformed equations are the first and second-order ordinary differential equations, respectively, and can be solved in a forward marching manner when proper boundary values are supplied, i.e. the wave amplitude, the wave amplitude gradient, and the wave phase gradient at a side boundary. Simple spatially-centered finite difference numerical schemes are adopted to solve the present set of equations. The equation set is applied to two test cases, Booij’ inclined plane slope profile, and Bragg’ wavy bed profile. The present equations set is satisfactorily verified against other theories including the full linear equation, Massel's modified mild-slope equation, and Berkhoff's mild-slope equation etc.

  • Lately, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAV), Unmanned Aerial Systems(UAS) or also often known as drones, as a data acquisition platform and as a measurement instrument are becoming attractive for many photogrammetric surveying applications, especially generation of the high density point clouds(HDPC). This paper presents the performance evaluation of a low-cost rotary wing quadrocopter UAS for generation of the HDPC in a test bed environment. Its performance was assessed by comparing the coordinates of UAS based HDPC to the results of Network RTK GNSS surveying with 62 ground check points. The results indicate that the position RMSE of the check points are ${\sigma}_H={\pm}0.102m$ in Horizonatal plane, and ${\sigma}_V={\pm}0.209m$ in vertical, and the maxium deviation of Elevation was 0.570m within block area of ortho-photo mosaic. Therefore the required level of accuracy at NGII for production of ortho-images mosaic at a scale of 1:1000 was reached, UAS based imagery was found to make use of it to update scale 1:1000 map. And also, since this results are less than or equal to the required level in working rule agreement for airborne laser scanning surveying of NGII for Digital Elevation Model generation of grids $1m{\times}1m$ and 1:1000 scale, could be applied with production of topographic map and ortho-image mosaic at a scale of 1:1000~1:2500 over small-scale areas.
