  • The global warming because of the CO2 emission and solution about this emerge as the international enviroment problem. Particularly, it is the absolutely it is needed for reducing the CO2 in the cement industry and harmful material actual condition. And the construction of home and abroad and material manufacturers tries for the technology development for the carbon dioxide and harmful material reduction which the portland cement in manufacture is usually emitted along with the increase of concerns about the environment-friendly concrete and panel. Therefore, in this research, the compressive strength of the inorganic binder and flexural strength tries to be measured in order to draw the inappropriate high temperature cure time of the ternary system inorganic binder using the blast furnace slag, red mud, silica fumewhich is the industrial byproduct with the cement substitute material, and etc.

  • Polysulfone (PS) membranes were prepared by the phase inversion process using water or isopropanol as nonsolvent. The Flory-Huggins theory for a ternary system nonsolvent/solvent/polymer is applied to describe the thermodynamic equilibria of the components. The calculated ternary phase equilibria show that demixing of a PS binary solution with n-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) will be fast in a water coagulation bath and will be delayed in an isopropanol bath. The prepared membranes were characterized by SEM, gas adsorption-desorption measurement, and permeability test. The membrane, which is precipitated by fast demixing in a water bath, has nodular structures in the skin region and includes finger-like cavities in the sublayer. The membrane coagulated by isopropanol has a very dense and thick skin structure, which is formed by delayed demixing. The membrane coagulated by isopropanol showed considerably lower pore volume and surface area compared to that observed with water coagulation method. With dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent and 2-3 wt% of water, the solution can show the liquid-liquid phase separation due to agglomation of the polymer-lean phase from the homogeneous solution. The membranes, which were coagulated near an equilibrium state, show the large (micron size) round pores in the whole membranes. The pores do not contribute the permeation characteristics.

  • Adsorption on goethite of individual component from a solution containing phosphate, sulfate, or copper ion was investigated. Competitive adsorption in the binary and ternary solution systems composed of phosphate, sulfate, and copper ions was also investigated. In competitive adsorption systems with phosphate and sulfate ions, the presence of phosphate ion reduced the adsorption of sulfate ion largely. On the other hand, the presence of sulfate ion caused only a small decrease in phosphate adsorption. This result suggests that phosphate ion is a stronger competitor for adsorption on goethite than sulfate ion, which is consistent with the higher affinity of phosphate for the surface compared to sulfate ion. Compared to the results from single-sorbate systems, adsorption of copper ion in the binary system of sulfate ion and copper ion was found to be enhanced in the presence of sulfate ion. Addition of sulfate ion to the binary system of copper ion and phosphate ion resulted in a small enhancement in copper sorption. This result implies that the presence of sulfate ion promotes adsorption of the ternary complex FeOHCuSO$_4$. The adsorption isotherms could be well described by the Langmuir adsorption equation.

  • Using Small Angle Light Scattering (SALS), the effect of quench depth on the kinetics of phase separation for ternary solution blends was investigated. The system was composed of two polymers (polystyrene and polybutadiene) and a solvent (toluene). The analyses of the early stage of phase separation were based of the Cahn-Hilliard theory [1,5]. Apparent diffusion coefficients and the fastest mode of fluctuations were evaluated, when quench depth of the system were varied near the critical composition of polymer. In the late stage of phase separation, the domain growth showed a power law with the 1/3 exponent, i.e. $q_m(t)~t^{-1/3}$. For comparison between real images and scattering profiles with time, the image of phase domains with time were obtained by using Laser Confocal Scanning Microscopy (LSCM).

  • Recently, a silkworm strain (tentatively named Sericinjam) producing 100% sericin cocoons has been studied in South Korea. In this preliminary study, the crystallinity, mechanical properties, and dissolution conditions of sericin from Sericinjam cocoons were examined. The Sericinjam cocoon could be dissolved in water at high temperature (120℃) and high pressure (HTHP method) in an autoclave and in a CaCl2/H2O/EtOH mixture (ternary solvent method), resulting in 82% and 97% dissolution after 30 min, respectively. The solution viscosity of the silk sericin formic acid (SSFA) solution obtained from sericin extracted using the ternary solvent method was higher than that obtained using the HTHP method; however, SSFA solutions obtained from sericin extracted from conventional Baekokjam cocoons yielded a higher solution viscosity. The crystallinity and breaking strength of the sericin film from Sericinjam cocoons were slightly lower, respectively, than those from Baekokjam cocoons. In contrast, the elongation at break of the Sericinjam sericin film obtained using the HTHP method was higher than that of the Baekokjam sericin film.

  • A rigid polymer, cellulose triacetate (CTA) dissolved in a combination of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and methylene chloride (MC) solution are liguid crystalline above a certain concentration. A flexible polymer, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) also dissolves in TFA/MC, but does not form liguid crystal phase. Ternary solutions, CTA/PET/TFA-MC which CTA and PET were mixed in a same solvent TFA/MC (6/4 : v/v) showed phase separation and mesophase formation.

  • Supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) such as fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag and silica fume are now being extensively used in concrete to control expansion due to alkali-silica reactivity (ASR). However, the replacement level of a single SCM needed to deleterious ASR expansion and cracking may create other problem and concerns. For example, incorporating silica fume at levels greater than 10% by mass of cement may lead to dispersion and workability concerns, while fly ash can lead to poor strength development at early age, The combination of silica fume and fly ash in ternary cementitious system may alleviate this and other concerns, and result in a number of synergistic effects. The aim of the study was to enable evaluation of more realistic suitability of a silica fume-fly ash combination system for ASR resistance based on an in-house modification of ASTM C 1260 test method. The modification can be more closely identified with actual field conditions. In this study three different strengths of NaOH test solution(1N, 0.5N, and 0.25N) were used to measure the expansion characteristics of mortar bar made with a reactive aggregate. The other variable included longer testing period of 28 days instead of a conventional 14 days.

  • This study examined the effect of the CaMgSn ternary phase on the aging response of the Mg-Sn-Zn alloy. The results revealed that the CaMgSn ternary phase formed in rod-like or needle-like shapes in Mg-3Zn-0.3Ca-xSn (x=1.5, 3, and 5 wt%) alloys and its size decreased as the Sn content increased from 1.5 wt% to 5 wt%. The Mg-3Zn-0.3Ca-5Sn alloy with a relatively fine CaMgSn phase was subjected to solution heat treatment and an aging process. Both the Mg-5Sn-3Zn-0.3Ca and Mg-5Sn-3Zn (base alloy) alloys had similar peak hardness values throughout all aging temperatures but the time-to-peak hardness in the Mg-5Sn-3Zn-0.3Ca alloy was 24-36 hours-earlier than that in the base alloy. Precipitates in the Mg-5Sn-3Zn-0.3Ca alloy were more refined than those in the Mg-5Sn-3Zn alloy and were mostly formed on basal planes. The $Mg_2Sn$ phase formed in either plate-like or rod-like shapes in the Mg-5Sn-3Zn alloy, whereas block-shaped $Mg_2Sn$ particles also formed in the Mg-5Sn-3Zn-0.3Ca alloy.
