ECC is a special kind of high performance cementititous composite which exhibits typically more than 2% tensile strain capacity by bridging microcracks at a crack section. Therefore, micromechanics should be adopted to obtain multiple cracking and strain hardening behavior. This paper propose a linear elastic analysis method to simulate the multiple cracking and strain hardening behavior of ECC. In an analysis, the stress-crack opening relation modified considering the orientation of fibers and the number of effective fibers is adopted. Furthermore, to account for uncertainty of materials and interface between materials, the randomness is assigned to the tensile strength(${\sigma}_{fci}$), elastic modulus($E_{ci}$), peak bridging stress(${\sigma}_{Bi}$) and crack opening at peak bridging stress(${\delta}_{Bi}$), initial stress at a crack section due to chemical bonding, (${\sigma}_{0i}$), and crack spacing(${\alpha}_cX_d$). Test results shows the number of cracking and stiffness of cracked section are important parameters and strain hardening behavior and maximum strain capacity can be simulated using the proposed method.

This paper provides approximate J estimates for off-centred, circumferential through-wall cracks in cylinders under bending and under combined tension and bending. The proposed method is based on the reference stress approach, where the dependence of elastic and plastic influence functions of J on the cylinder/crack geometry, the off-centred angle and strain hardening is minimised through the use of a proper normalising load. Based on published limited FE results for off-centred, circumferential through-wall cracks under bending, such normalising load is found, based on which the reference stress based J estimates are proposed for more general cases, such as for a different cylinder geometry and for combined loading. Comparison of the estimated J with extensive FE J results shows overall good agreements for different crack/cylinder geometries and for combined tension and bending, which provides sufficient confidence in the use of the proposed method to fracture mechanics analyses of off-centred circumferential cracks. Furthermore, the proposed method is simple to use, giving significant merits in practice.

Al6061 alloy reinforced with 15 volume% of Saffil fibers was fabricated by squeeze infiltration method. Uniform distribution of reinforcements and good bondings between reinforcements and matrix alloy were found in the microstructure of composites. Comparing with A16061 matrix alloy, tensile strength and elastic modulus of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/Al composites were increased up to 26% and 31%, respectively. Cyclic deformation and fatigue behavior of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/Al metal matrix composites were studied. The specimens were cycled using tension-tension(R=0.1) loading and under load controlled fatigue test. Cyclic stress-displacement curve through fatigue test was obtained. Fatigue strength of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/Al composites was about 200 MPa, i.e.0.55 of applied stress level(q). During fatigue test, $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/Al composites displayed cyclic hardening at all applied stress levels. The most of resultant displacement due to permanent plastic deformation occurred in less than the first 5% of fatigue life. Displacement-to-failure of the fatigue test was smaller than that of the tensile test because of accumulative damage by cumulative plastic deformation.

For cold weather concreting, frost damage at early age is generated in the concrete, and problems such as delaying of setting and hardening and lowering of strength manifestation emerge due to the low outside air temperature at the early stage of pouring, making the selection of an effective curing method critically important. Unfortunately, the tent sheet currently used as the curing film for heating insulation at work sites, not only has the problems of inferior permeability and extremely deteriorated airtightness, but a phenomenon of continuous fracturing is also generated along the direction of fabric of the material itself, presenting difficult circumstances for maintaining adequate curing temperature. The aim of this study was to develop an improved bubble sheet type curing film for heating insulation of cold weather concrete by combining mesh-tarpaulin, which has excellent tension properties, with bubble sheet, which offers superior insulation performance. The analysis showed that the improved curing film in which BBS1 is stacked to MT was a suitable replacement for curing films currently in use, as it has better permeability, tension property, and insulation performance than the T type film used at work sites today.

The steel plate for shadow mask is used in a Cathode-ray tube of TV monitor and is the strictest product in surface quality because hundreds thousand of holes are perforated in a plane of 25 ${\times}$25 inches. To mass-produce this product, a reversible cold rolling mill for silicon steel was used and the rolling technology and the activity for quality improvement are described in this work. Because the steel plate is a mild steel, which is very sensitive to strip-breakage even in a low tension, we reset the minimum tension values matching to the operating conditions. The roll mark due to the multi-segmented araangement of shape controlling roll was prevented by hardening the intermediate shape controlling roll and by changing the existing working-roll into a HSS (Hig Speed Steel) roll. The scratch caused by the speed difference between a idle roll and a strip was prevented by increasing the roll roughness. With these activities, the steel plate for shadow mask can be stable. The continuous improvement of quality is, however, required for the customer satisfaction both of domestic and overseas market.

During decades, there has been much progress in understanding of the inelastic behavior of the materials and numerous inelastic constitutive equations have been developed. The complexity of these constitutive equations generally requires a stable and accurate numerical method. To obtain the increment of state variable, its evolution laws are linearized by several approximation methods, such as general midpoint rule(GMR) or general trapezoidal rule(GTR). In this investigation, semi-implicit integration schemes using GTR and GMR were developed and implemented into ABAQUS by means of UMAT subroutine. The comparison of integration schemes was conducted on the simple tension case, and simple shear case and nonproportional loading case. The fully implicit integration(FI) was the most stable but amplified the truncation error when the nonlinearity of state variable is strong. The semi-implicit integration using GTR gave the most accurate results at tension and shear problem. The numerical solutions with refined time increment were always placed between results of GTR and those of FI. GTR integration with adjusting midpoint parameter can be recommended as the best integration method for viscoplastic equation considering nonlinear kinematic hardening.

This paper presents a preliminary study on the influence of material ductility on diagonal tension behavior of shear-wall panels. There have been a number of previous studies, which suggest that the use of high ductile material such as ECC (Engineered Cementitious Composite) significantly enhanced shear capacity of structural elements even without shear reinforcements involved. The present study emphasizes increased shear capacity of shear-wall panels by employing a unique strain-hardening ECC reinforced with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) short random fibers. Normal concrete was adopted as the reference material. Experimental investigation was performed to assess the failure mode of shear-wall panels subjected to knife-edge loading. The results from experiments show that ECC panels exhibit a more ductile failure mode and higher shear capacity when compared to ordinary concrete panels. The superior ductility of ECC was clearly reflected by micro-crack development, suppressing the localized drastic fracture typically observed in concrete specimen. This enhanced structural performance indicates that the application of ECC for a in-filled frame panel can be effective in enhancing seismic resistance of an existing frame in service.
Offshore platforms have to serve in harsh environments and hence are likely to be damaged due to wave induced fatigue and environmental corrosion. Welded tubular joints in offshore platforms are most vulnerable to fatigue damage. Such damages endanger the integrity of the structure. Therefore it is all the more essential to assess the capacity of damaged structure from the point of view of its safety. Eight internally ring stiffened fatigue damaged tubular joints with nominal chord and brace diameter of 324 mm and 219 mm respectively and thickness 12 mm and 8 mm respectively were tested under axial brace compression loading to evaluate the reserve capacity of the joints. These joints had earlier been tested under fatigue loading under corrosive environments of synthetic sea water and hence they have been cracked. The extent of the damage varied from 35 to 50 per cent. One stiffened joint was also tested under axial brace tension loading. The residual strength of fatigue damaged stiffened joint tested under tension loading was observed to be less than one fourth of that tested under compression loading. It was observed in this experimental investigation that in the damaged condition, the joints possessed an in-built load-transfer mechanism. A bi-linear stress-strain model was developed in this investigation to predict the reserve capacity of the joint. This model considered the strain hardening effect. Close agreement was observed between the experimental and predicted results. The paper presents in detail the experimental investigation and the development of the analytical model to predict the reserve capacity of internally ring stiffened joints.

This paper describes the self-alignment and bonding of microparts using adhesive surface tension to assemble microsystems in air. The alignment and bonding were tested experimentally using adhesive droplets, and the resulting performance was evaluated. The adhesive, which was inorganic and water-soluble before hardening, was diluted with water to a ratio of 10:1 so that its surface tension generated a sufficient restoring force for self-alignment. The experimental results showed that the average of the alignment errors obtained using the adhesive on $1.0\times1.0\times0.15-mm$ microparts was less than $2{\mu}m$ in the X and Y directions and 0.2 degrees in the e direction. These alignment errors were almost the same as those obtained using water. The use of a suitable adhesive had no negative effects on the alignment accuracy. The average tensile strength of the adhesive bond after self-alignment was $0.61N/mm^2$.

In this paper, the plane stress fracture toughness of low carbon steel with 3mm thickness is investigated for various specimen widths and crack ratios using the J integral. The experiments is carried out for the compact tension(CT) specimen on an Instron machine. For materials that may be approximated by the Ramberg and Osgood stress strain law, the relevant crack parameter like the J integral and load line displacement are approximately normalized. Crack driving forces in terms of J integral is computed using the above estimation scheme. Abtained results are summarized as follows. (1) The plane stress fracture toughness, J$_{c}$, is almost constant in the range 50-70mm of width. Hence J$_{c}$ can be obtained by using smaller specimen than ASTM standard. (2) Yoon's and Simpson's formular which considers crack growth in obtaining J integral show more consevative J than Rice's and Merkle's (3) J$_{c}$ is almost constant in the range 0.499-0.701 crack ratios tested. J$_{c}$ obtained by using Kumar's formular is 28.14kgf/mm for base metal specimen and 32.51kgf/mm for annealed. (4) Comparison of the prediction with actual experimental measurements by Yoon's formular show good agreement for several different-size specimens.
